Do you know a lottery winner...? Or have u won a substantial prize?

I was thinking with the amount of people on mumsnet, that some of us should know people who have won a big prize on the lotto/euromillions/euro raffle/set for life/scratchcards etc? I do and they won tens of millions.. fantastic!

I never used to play but started to a couple weeks ago mainly the set for life, I did play the valentines euro and won 11.30 for 2 numbers and both lucky stars.. bit disappointed with the amount but it's better than nothing I suppose 😉 but I did expect more for getting 4 numbers.

What did they do with their winnings? How are they now? Did they disappear? Or still around?

Maybe some of us have been lucky enough to win big..? I haven't unfortunately.. but would love for people to share their stories if there are any lucky winners on here? 😂 what is the most you have won? And how?

It sounds bad but to win £1million isn't loads by the time people have brought a house, fancy car & posh hols. It's easy to see how they can burn through it.
I don't think I'd move if I won that much. I'd pay off my mortgage though, have some decent hols & retire early without worrying too much

I don't know anybody who's won unfortunately

BobnLen · 26/02/2025 21:13

Some people at work won quite a bit on the pools in the 80s, about £30k each, which was worth quite a lot then, unfortunately I wasn't in the syndicate as it was from before I started

gunsnrosacea · 26/02/2025 21:14

Someone I worked with won over £4.5m in the late 90’s and a guy I went to school with won £2m a few years later, meanwhile I couldn’t win a summons.

Shesnotelectric · 26/02/2025 21:16

I won euromillions millionare code a few years ago.
only in early 30s so knew it wouldnt last forever got about 4 years out of it (had to spend half on a house) but its nice to be mortgage free and being able to work for myself.
I am forever grateful it happened it isnt exactly ‘living the dream’ money but at the same time has made life easier

Brienneoftarthismyhero · 26/02/2025 21:19

Nope! Even the postcode lottery the best I’ve had is a link to select a crappy gift like oven gloves or chocolates. I still get excited when I get that little email from national lottery alerting me that I’ve won though it’s always a disappointment.

I know 2 people who have won the lotto.

One I met after he won, and lost it all, he now works a factory job near me, says he's never been happier, had a fun few years apparently.

Another won, messed up his marriage, went off with a family member of his wife and is deeply unhappy now and doesn't speak to his kids or grandkids at all. Haven't seen him for years actually.

Aw this is sad 😔

Wowsers 🤑 imagine that much money just sitting in the loft 😬 I wonder what it actually sold for in the end

Yes 1 million nowadays isn't much is it! Crazy! Would still love to win it tho.. I likely wouldn't buy a new house either. Pay mortgage, couple of nice holidays a year, pop a chunk into a pension pot and just be comfortable living of the interest but still be careful. I'd love to do some charity work

I know two people - one a family member, one a friend - who’ve won over a million on the Lottery. Both bought houses, both retrained for different professions (one paid for her husband to retrain too), and both are comfortably off, living off a mix of part-time salaries and investment income, and both are very happy.

I knew someone who won the pools back in the 80s (for those of you too young to know what the pools were, it was a bit like the lottery but you predicted football results).

She left her husband and moved to Greece.

Was her name Shirley?

Justsewsew · 26/02/2025 21:29

I know someone who won about £5mill. The family moved to the sea in a massive house but then got divorced after 4 years and moved back. Doesn't always work out well.
A syndicate at work won enough to get about £100k each. One of them had only joined that week and there was some annoyance that they got the same split as everyone else.
My old neighbour also won the pools with a syndicate about 30 years ago.

An elderly neighbour won just over £10 K on thePostcode lottery, spent it all on a new chair and died 3 days later. His DD told me this.

It was life changing but in a more ordinary way if that makes sense?!
i wish you lots of luck 🍀 😊

CottonCandyCrank · 26/02/2025 21:38

See some people think it becomes relatable and have the thought of 'if they can win then there's a chance I can..' but I think the opposite, i think 'what are the actual chances of me winning anything substantial when I already know of someone to win big' yes I am a pessimist 🤣

What's your thoughts on this?

@Shesnotelectric with you winning yourself.. do you know of anyone else to win big? 🤔

A friend won 3M, house, business, divorce, mostly gone in less than 5 years.

OneFineDay13 · 26/02/2025 21:48

A close family member to me won around £11k years ago in an employee syndicate

Solaire18381 · 26/02/2025 21:50

I know someone who won £1.8 mil on the lottery when she was still in her 20's, over 20 years ago now. Gave up work in a supermarket, moved out from the family home in a poorer area and bought a house in a nice area.

A few years later met her now husband and they have two children. Incidentally we live in the same area (though hard work) and our children go to the same school.

So it was definitely life changing, allowed her never to work again if she never wanted to, be a SAHP, also afforded her to live in a nicer place that she probably may have never been able to afford otherwise.

Went public at the time of the win and now and again pops up in the local press, doing voluntary work (usually for the lottery). Nice family, keep to themselves. Husband has always worked, not in a particularly high paying industry. Looking on their social media (as we are friends on there) they do have nice holidays.

Wendolino · 26/02/2025 21:51

A few years ago I got a phone call from Postcode Lottery telling me to stay in and be available to answer the door on a certain date. I said OK but thought no way am I appearing on tv! Anyway, they wouldn't tell me how much I'd won but of course my mind was going crazy imagining something like £200,000.
Well, they didn't knock on my door, but they did send me a big fake cheque, in a gold envelope, for £3,400, which was very nice. The actual big winners were just around the corner in the next road- it's only a small road and there were two winners who won £340,000 each. One of them was a really lovely lady but the other one kept their head down and I never found out who it was.
The month after, I got a phone call to tell me I'd won top prize in the lottery of our local rugby club- £1,800. I had my photo taken on the pitch, with the mascot, holding the cheque!
We had a lovely holiday with our winnings and bought our DC something nice.

This post has prompted me to buy a lucky dip for the Euro millions tomorrow night…..watch out for my big update 🤣

OneFineDay13 · 26/02/2025 21:52

Oh ! And also, how could I forget this. When my son was a bay we had moved into a new area, I heard our neighbours whooping and screaming one night and had a feeling they had won the lottery. Yup they won about £250k. They got married soon after and really nicely invited us to there evening reception

Brienneoftarthismyhero · 26/02/2025 21:55

@Wendolino 2 wins back to back though I feel your disappointment with the postcode lottery , especially after the phone call!!
