Do you know a lottery winner...? Or have u won a substantial prize?

I was thinking with the amount of people on mumsnet, that some of us should know people who have won a big prize on the lotto/euromillions/euro raffle/set for life/scratchcards etc? I do and they won tens of millions.. fantastic!

I never used to play but started to a couple weeks ago mainly the set for life, I did play the valentines euro and won 11.30 for 2 numbers and both lucky stars.. bit disappointed with the amount but it's better than nothing I suppose 😉 but I did expect more for getting 4 numbers.

What did they do with their winnings? How are they now? Did they disappear? Or still around?

Maybe some of us have been lucky enough to win big..? I haven't unfortunately.. but would love for people to share their stories if there are any lucky winners on here? 😂 what is the most you have won? And how?

I work in a bank and one of the regular customers won the lottery - she won millions.

Prior to winning she was a lovely lady who was always down on her luck - maxed out overdraft, working constantly, etc.

Since winning she is obviously rich beyond measure but she is also insufferable! Long gone is the lovely lady I used to chat away with. She doesn't even speak to us when she enters the bank now and acts so entitled. It's so disappointing.

Alphabetamega · 26/02/2025 22:01

Growing up my neighbour won a very significant amount.

She was with an arsehole abusive (physical, mental and sexual) and got the strength to leave with her two young kids. Times were very hard for her, and she scraped by. Three or so years later she had won millions on the lottery. Completely life changing for her.

Someone I worked with won over £4.5m in the late 90’s and a guy I went to school with won £2m a few years later, meanwhile I couldn’t win a summons.

Sorry the couldn't win a summons but sent me 🤣🤣

@Wendolino 2 wins back to back though I feel your disappointment with the postcode lottery , especially after the phone call!!

It's funny but when I got the cheque I was really pleased! I was glad for the lady who won because she's so nice.

My SIL won the National at Bingo years ago. The prize was £100,000 back then. She had to share it with another winner in another bingo hall so got £50,000, which she shared with her friend who was with her.

See some people think it becomes relatable and have the thought of 'if they can win then there's a chance I can..' but I think the opposite, i think 'what are the actual chances of me winning anything substantial when I already know of someone to win big' yes I am a pessimist 🤣

What's your thoughts on this?

@Shesnotelectric with you winning yourself.. do you know of anyone else to win big? 🤔

I get what you mean its as if you always feel like its destined for someone else unless it actually happens.
I had never won more than a tombola before and never known anyone to win more than 1k in one go

My late uncle was part of a factory syndicate in the Midlands that won 25 plus years ago. Think he got around £300k but there were quite a lot of them I think so the total was in the millions!

spudjulia · 26/02/2025 22:20

I know someone who won close to £50m on euromillions years ago. I don’t see her anymore (wasn’t in touch prior to the win, it’s not because of the win we’re not in touch) but the national newspapers still write stories about her now and then. According to the newspapers, she started off pretty well - modest house purchase to stay near family, very generous with friends and family. But over the last decade they’ve been reporting that she’s been hit by the lottery curse - a new article when she divorced, businesses failed, family member charged with crime etc. but over a decade that sort of thing could happen regardless of winning the lottery. She was really nice. I hope she’s happy.

FarmerDramaLlama · 26/02/2025 22:21

My friends parents won the pools in the 90s and they went to Disney (and have been a dozen times since).

I won £50k on the premium bonds. I’ve not done anything with it. It’s funny how much money you need to win to make a massive difference now. A million pounds would be amazing but not enough to live the high life forever now.

NCfor24 · 26/02/2025 22:22

I was driving to work one morning and saw the People's Postcode Lottery with 2 camera crews outside 2 houses about to knock the doors. I looked it up online later and they'd both won around £300k iirc. It was a pretty poor area and I remember thinking that could be pretty life changing, would clear mortgages if homeowners or allow them to buy a house. That amount would change out life for sure, but nowhere near enough to risk ruining them it if that makes sense. But being mortgage free and putting money away for kids' university fees or a house deposit etc....that would be plenty for me.

WeirdSponge · 26/02/2025 22:25

I know a few people who have won on Millionaire. One won £32k but constantly banged on about how it should have been more- a semi-pro quizzer. The other won £64k but was rich anyway so it was more of a nice to have rather than life-changing.

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/02/2025 22:32

Someone I knew in my neighbourhood won £1m ijn the national lottery in about 2016.

OpheliaNightingale · 26/02/2025 22:33

@CottonCandyCrank Yes! A girl I went to school with, and who still lives nearby, won well over 5 million pounds on the national lottery! Something absolutely awful happened to her afterwards though, unsure if related to the money..

TeaNtoast25 · 26/02/2025 22:36

I know 2 people who won a few million on the lotto and one person who won a couple off hundred grand on a scratch card, not bad going for living in a small town !

Demelza81 · 26/02/2025 22:37

Parents won £1m on euro millions a few years back!

TeaNtoast25 · 26/02/2025 22:38

The man who won on the scratch card put it towards a business and the man who won the lotto brought a big house after living in a council massionette being a single dad to his boys he really deserved the win he’s a lovely man

LeaveALittleNote · 26/02/2025 22:39

I know someone who won a few hundred thousand on the national Lottery

NotMyDayJob · 26/02/2025 22:46

i know someone who won £50k on who wants to be a millionaire. She definitely got her teeth done, but she already took v nice holidays. I assume she banked the rest for a house deposit or similar as her life didn’t seem any different (other than the teeth)

Findmethesea · 26/02/2025 22:48

I know a few,
Family -early winners maybe £2 mill purchased new build houses for them & their children around the corner from each other. The actual winners are okay but the partner of one of the children isn't very nice. They just live mortgage free in an area they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford & have everyday jobs.
Lady won as part of a syndicate approx £45k quit her job drank it all & has never worked since.
Postcode lottery, father & adult son both won recently approx £150k each, father had just retired so for luxuries & extras. Son able to buy their first home

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/02/2025 22:51

I know somebody who I suspect has had a lottery win. Her lifestyle has changed massively over the last year and she's given up her job. There are no deaths or anything that would suggest inheritance, she's still in her early 40's. There's been a few comments from people such as "do you think x has had a lottery win or something". If she has, then bloody good for her, she's a delightful human being and she deserves it.

CHEESEDELICIOUS · 26/02/2025 22:56

I worked with someone who won £10,000 on the lottery. Lucky lady. She treated herself to a new car as her old one was on its way out.

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 26/02/2025 21:29

Was her name Shirley?

😅😆

CHEESEDELICIOUS · 26/02/2025 22:59

Some lucky so and so won £250,000 on a scratch card from the local shop near me.
