Names you call your child that aren’t their names

My daughter has a name beginning with J - for reasons lost in the mists of time we call her Jinty McGinty, which has nothing in common with her name, bar the first letter.

I find it amusing that we spent so long agonising over her name, yet often don’t use it.

DS has a beautiful name.

We call him ‘Goose’.

Withoutuse · 23/02/2025 14:14

‘deathwish’. Because he has done so many things that could have killed him.

MaltipooMama · 23/02/2025 14:20

Munchie (short for munchkin)
Mr Munch (derives from Munchie)
Munch Face (as above)
Mr Baby (I call the puppy Mrs Puppy so it matches this)
Pud/Pudsy (these are more what his dad calls him)
Tyke-a-saurus

AmazingBouncingFerret · 23/02/2025 14:29

Chicken
chicken noodle
chicken soup
chicken nugget
chick a dee
chicken dinner
chicky egg

She takes it quite well considering she’s 15 years old.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/02/2025 14:31

Our youngest has the loveliest name. 22 now, we call him “Pop”. Have done forever, can’t actually recall why now 😁

sanityisamyth · 23/02/2025 14:32

DS is Pickle to pretty much everyone!

MarshmallowClouds · 23/02/2025 15:27

Yeah, my daughter is in her 20s and embraces her JintyMcGintyness.

Bloom15 · 23/02/2025 15:29

I called DS Bloom or Bloomie - hence my username

Sortalike · 23/02/2025 15:33

DD has been "Boo" since she was minutes old. I don't think my dad has ever called her by her given name which is nothing like Boo. I think I must have said something like "beautiful Boo" and it stuck.

ZenNudist · 23/02/2025 15:34

Pickle
Bae (short for baby as they are now teens or teens)
Pickle 1 and Pickle 2
Stupid names like "my murfin"

TakeMeToKernow · 23/02/2025 15:37

SDD18 has for forever had a million names which aren’t her own. It’s just happened. We call her not-her-name without thinking and she responds without thinking. Similar to a poster above, we call her “Pops” and her most commonly used name happens to me a man’s nickname 🫢 it was never intentional, it just happens, and she responds to that male name. Imagine a lovely young woman responding to “Gav”.

Icequeen01 · 23/02/2025 15:38

My DS25 has been called Big Nose by my DH since he was little. He actually has a very small nose but DH says it was because DS always had to know what was going on with everybody and everything. Weirdly DS still answers to it 🤣

HappyChappieDappe · 23/02/2025 15:39

I call DD "Roo" it's part of her nick name but just shortened

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 23/02/2025 15:39

Pickle, sausage, munchkin, pudd'n, squashie, Bobby, baby boy, shwa. Probably more than that. There's only 2 DC, and "baby boy" is 18.

Babsgranddaughter · 23/02/2025 15:41

Changed name for this as family may recognise me but my grandma was the "baby" of the family after two older brothers so although named Doreen was nicknamed Babs for baby by her parents. She continued to be Babs even when another baby girl came along. She became Auntie Babs, her husband called her Babs, everyone called her Babs. She died at 98, still Babs, so discovering her name was actually Doreen was a surprise to a few people at the funeral!

TourangaLeila · 23/02/2025 15:41

Dc1
Ike
Ickybickyboo
Icklepickle
Ikey
Ikerboo
Ikclebicklebing bong.

His name is Isaac

Dc2
Roo
Roobear
Poohbear
Bunterroo
Roobles
Roobledooble
His name is Hunter and it all started with Hunter-roo, like Kangaroo 😂

Someone in bewilderwood in Norfolk once hear me shout Roo, and she said "ooh I have a roo too, what's yours short for"

I said "Hunter" and she looked at me like I was mental 😂

Pickingmyselfup · 23/02/2025 15:46

My 9 year old is Monster
The 7 year old is Baby or Baby Face. Not ideal but it's so hard to change the habit of a (his) lifetime!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 23/02/2025 15:48

When I was a child, for some time I was known as Smudge. Then it was Petal. Now it's often Daughter #1.

Feelingleftoutagain · 23/02/2025 15:50

1st child is Yog because of this love of yoghurt when he was little.
2nd child puddlington symth- he was pud as he was this tiny little chubby it then went to puddlington symth for short!

letslaughitoff · 23/02/2025 16:12

In our family we are given a name at birth the norm for any one then we are given a nick name and that is what we use all our lifes.
Never use our real names only times we use real names are at gp schools hospitals etc other than that we only use our nick name.
Anyone asks whats your name we give our nick names because thats what we are use to.

farmergirl15 · 23/02/2025 16:14

We have an Oliver, we call him bob, short for Ollybobbidingdong

HundredPercentUnsure · 23/02/2025 16:19

Two DC with great names, agonised over for many many months

We call them Chops and Tids.

Tids is also called Gords - they acquired the nickname gordita on holiday in Spain by the cleaner when they were about 3m old (which means little chubby one) and it stuck 😂

Blubbles · 23/02/2025 16:20

Blubbles 😂
