Names you call your child that aren’t their names

My daughter has a name beginning with J - for reasons lost in the mists of time we call her Jinty McGinty, which has nothing in common with her name, bar the first letter.

I find it amusing that we spent so long agonising over her name, yet often don’t use it.

Onionface, inspired by Mole insulting the rabbits. We use this for each other to wind the other person up.

My gran's name was Yvonne. She was called Bunty by everyone (her mother used to sing Bye Baby Bunting to her).

My daughter gets called Posy or the fuller version of Posy Annabelle. Often shortened to P.A.

Tootyfilou · 23/02/2025 17:53

I am Tootyfilou… so named because I was a tiny prem. still mostly called Tooty by my dad… I am 60 😂
My husband always calls me Raz, abbreviation of my surname. My dad was also known as Raz, by his friends.

smellslikedog · 23/02/2025 17:56

My three have all had nicknames from birth that I've used pretty much interchangeably with their real names
Son #1 is FP (short for Felix Pie. Where the 'Pie' comes from I have no clue)
Son #2 is Beeeesch (no idea why, his name is Oscar)
Son #3 is Mouse, short for Mouse Face because he had furry arms & a cute little face as a baby. I call him this 99.9% of the time even though he's 14!

sciaticafanatica · 23/02/2025 18:00

I sometines used to call my DS Justin, as in just in time or just enough (effort), usually in regard to school work. He's now a Head of Department😄 His name is nothing like Justin.

Ds is "Squeaky", "Mr Man" and "Boy" depending on my mood. (as well as his name)
He answers to them all without a huff, so I can presume he doesn't mind.

Omg we call my 2 year old moose and I am absolutely stealing some of these! They are hilarious

TotallyKerplunked · 23/02/2025 18:22

DD went through a particularly destructive terrible two's and got stuck with the nickname bam-bam, which has become bam-bam boogie pants, bamboozle, bamboogly and others. DS1 and 2 are mostly stuck with bab, sausage, pumpkin and honey bunny

honeylulu · 23/02/2025 18:22

A lot of these sound familiar ...

DS (now 20):
Pops
Porky chops
Oswald (not his name)
Sugar Pie
Shoogs (short for Sugar Pie)
Sir Shitalot (he did/does)

DD now aged 10:
Baby
The Baby
Bubba
Baba
Bunny*
Bunnykins
Bunny Boo
Boo
Boo Boo
Sugar Pop Pie (to differentiate from Sugar Pie)
Princess Shitalot (see above)

She was known as Bunny from so early and so long that nursery had it down as her "known as" name. When she went to school she came home on the first day and said indignantly "they said my name is [actual real name]".
