Names you call your child that aren’t their names

My daughter has a name beginning with J - for reasons lost in the mists of time we call her Jinty McGinty, which has nothing in common with her name, bar the first letter.

I find it amusing that we spent so long agonising over her name, yet often don’t use it.

mondaytosunday · 23/02/2025 18:30

I call my children variation of their names, too outing to say exactly what as they are uncommon (but not weird) names. But say it's Anne. Then it would be Anna, Anna Banana, Andy, Andy Pandy, Antsy pants if being fidgety and so on.
I use babes a lot for both, bud or buddy for my son. Princess on occasion for my daughter.
My son calls me boss, but usually Ma, my DD calls me mum, sometimes mumsy.

SheherazadesSpringNonsense · 23/02/2025 18:32

My middle daughter has the nicest name of the three. We call her ‘tots’. She’s 18.

hyggetyggedotorg · 23/02/2025 18:38

DS1 (28) is JJ despite those not being his initials.
DS2 (24) is Tomliboo because he loved the Tomliboos in In The Night Garden when he was tiny (his name is Thomas though).
DC3 (16) is Pops despite that also not being their name.

My dad always called me Pootle, after Pootle Flump 😆.

UnctuousUnicorns · 23/02/2025 18:42

Too many to mention for my own three, but my dad is used to call and refer to me as "Queenie" when I was small. 🙂

One I call Roo as she had a habit of bouncing on on the spot as a baby.

Another is Smoosh or Squish as she was a particularly cute, chubby baby.

Eldest (now 17) he still responds to Ninks, Ninkynoodles, Chen, Chenkins and Chenneth.

Little responds to Toodles, Toodle Bug and generally anything that sounds like a pet name e.g Sausage, Sauskins etc😂

sugarapplelane · 23/02/2025 19:17

Pickle or sausage

WithASpider · 23/02/2025 19:17

I think they all came from DH, my family don't do nicknames. In his family there's Bill Badger, Dibble, Nibso, His Nibs, Muffet and Muff.

tattoonewbie · 23/02/2025 19:18

DS1- Johann or ham as a derivative. Nothing to do with his name
DS2. Sausage.

Baby boy, bobos, bubs, bwelgas' 😂 The last one I made up myself and it just stuck. I've been calling him these since he was about 3.

So corny I know.... he's 8 years old now and he's already starting to hate them all for some reason. 😉

FreshAirForwards · 23/02/2025 19:21

Beaubo, this comes from her calling me Momo.
or The Wah.
lots of my friends call her The Wah, or Lady WahWah. She just goes with it.

Her given name is really pretty. At least her peers use it I guess.
