Names you call your child that aren’t their names

My daughter has a name beginning with J - for reasons lost in the mists of time we call her Jinty McGinty, which has nothing in common with her name, bar the first letter.

I find it amusing that we spent so long agonising over her name, yet often don’t use it.

DD has been "Boo" since she was minutes old. I don't think my dad has ever called her by her given name which is nothing like Boo. I think I must have said something like "beautiful Boo" and it stuck.

Same! Our DS has been Boo since he was pretty much born. He's 6 now. Rarely ever call him by his actual name.

Derrymum123 · 23/02/2025 16:24

DD18 - is known as Mickey (given to her many years ago because she has piercing blue eyes ) Mickey blue eyes to many, Mickey B to family. Sisters call her Michael, Mick, Mikey, Michaela or Blue.
Real name Niamh.

Squirrel. I have no idea why, I just said it when he was a newborn and still do.

Amongst other terms of endearment, such as little one, baby boy, babba, sweetheart, sweetpea etc etc

DD1 - Blondie, the name of a famous singer who she shares her first name with.

DD2 - teeny tiny first name, Little Miss Adult.

Call them both Tilly Mint.

SomersetBrie · 23/02/2025 16:32

Mine were Bear and Lamb (and various nicknames around Bear and Lamb). Bear is still called Bear at 19, but we've dropped Lamb for the 16 year old (much to his relief!)

Silvertulips · 23/02/2025 16:37

You are all much nicer than the name I call mine!!

Mylobsterteapot · 23/02/2025 16:46

My brother calls me Bebe. My parents took aaaaages to decide on my name, so I was Baby Brown (not really my surname, but you get the idea) for a while. My brother called me BB, which became Bebe. I am now Auntie Bebe to his children.

I’m not sure he remembers what my real name is…

My dad calls me Bug, he has only called me my real name twice. Once when I burned my sister with straightens and the other time when I changed my last name. Even once rang my work with a message for “Bug” and the poor woman who took it was so confused. I don’t really do nick names myself tho.

HeebieJeebeez · 23/02/2025 17:09

Funny Bunny (on account of the daft things DS does and the amount of jumping his life involves). Little Emperor (for the obvious reasons). And 'his name-osaurus' because sometimes it feels like I could be raising a mini T-rex!

His brothers, as brothers do, decided to adapt it to Whingebob, Whingey for short. Amazingly he answers to it.
