Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

Lychees but in juice, not syrup.

I buy beans by the tray (12 tins) - kidney, butter, black, canellini. Also chickpeas.

The posh skinned and filleted sardines in olive oil with chilli. So nice.

Prunes, really nice in porridge. Fudgy and rich. Also make a great pudding www.theguardian.com/food/2024/dec/17/nigel-slaters-recipe-for-little-prune-puddings

Condensed milk to make no churn ice cream.

Steamed puddings in a tin especially the syrup ones.

The mutti tinned tomatoes are lovely.

Waitrose Apple. Great for an apple cake or use a few to make a crumble.

Continuing the Greek theme, Lidl sometimes sell tinned meatballs in tomato sauce. They're sublime and I end up eating them cold out of tin

Dolmades to go with your greek beans

And canned aubergine from Lidl in their Greek week.

New potatoes. Damn I love those weird bald potatoes warmed up with butter and salt. Don't microwave them though, they can explode.

HumphreyCushionintheHouse · 23/02/2025 06:32

Condensed milk, boil in the can for an easy Banoffi.

Tinned custard. No one else I know likes it, but I do.

fromthegecko · 23/02/2025 06:43

Cooked barley.

cryinglaughing · 23/02/2025 06:46

Tinned potatoes.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 23/02/2025 06:46

@HumphreyCushionintheHouse you can now get those tins as toffee condensed milk… they’ve done the boiling for you!

(An even quicker banoffie pie 😁)

Sliced apples for easy apple crumble

Condensed milk with whisked double cream for an easy ice cream, with cardamon pods for a Nadia ice cream.

Any kind of beans to add to curry chilli stew soup

Big green lentils

Artichoke hearts.

Seconded.

GnomeDePlume · 23/02/2025 07:13

Vegetable curry, I think it's Tesco. Makes a lovely side dish.

thinktwice36 · 23/02/2025 07:14

Apples for crumble.

Pootles34 · 23/02/2025 07:17

Bold beans (the brand) are best for any beans or chickpeas. So good! Also tinned salmon for fishcakes, although hold your nose when you open it.

DustyLee123 · 23/02/2025 07:22

@FFSJulie I remember Heinz tinned coleslaw, and I’m sure they did a potato salad too

DustyLee123 · 23/02/2025 07:25

I thought tinned food, particularly fruit, used to be a cheaper way to buy food but the prices are ridiculous now.
But I’ve started using chickpeas in my work salad now, whereas I always only put them in curries.
And the M&S tinned steak is meant to be great, my DF always asks me to buy him a tin.

Wasywasydoodah · 23/02/2025 07:26

Mutti pizza sauce is amazing

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 23/02/2025 07:30

Spam . In a sandwich with lots of black pepper.

Giggorata · 23/02/2025 07:39

Haven't seen it for ages but there used to be a lovely tinned ratatouille..

BillStickersIsInnocent · 23/02/2025 07:40

Artichoke hearts.
Figs in syrup.
Kidney beans in chilli sauce.

BertieBotts · 23/02/2025 07:41

It's old school but my children love tinned ravioli. It's a quick and easy dinner for them but one of the only tins that doesn't come with a ring pull. We had a crap tin opener for ages and I kept having to wait until DH or older DS was home to open it for me!

MyOtherProfile · 23/02/2025 07:45

Tinned grapefruit is my favourite.
We also eat lots of tinned fish, tinned tomatoes and tinned beans.

DustyLee123 · 23/02/2025 07:49

When I was a student I used to treat myself to a tin of Heinz spaghetti bolognaise. It was lovely!

Lourdes12 · 23/02/2025 07:49

Personally I cannot eat any tinned food, makes me gag
