Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

Smoked oysters/mussles, anchovies, French lentils, tinned greek olive oil and good Italian tomatoes.

Could you share the brand/s too ... I am so loving this thread!

I love these from the Cypressa brand at The Co-Op :

All the Olives!

Artichoke Hearts
Aubergine & Feta
Chilli & Spiced Garlic
Baked Giant Beans
Red Peppers
Stuffed Vine Leaves

Off to make a list of all these fabulous suggestions MN!

MsAdaLovelace · 23/02/2025 14:30

And how could I forget!

Cherry Tomatoes - great for making Moroccan Eggs

Sardines - for lunch on Sourdough or Rye with Spring Onions or Radish, Rocket, Chilli Flakes, Fresh Lemon Juice and Worcestershire Sauce

Off to find tins of Cherry Pie filling and Smoked Oysters now ...

x

Certain tins will be selling out across the nation thanks to Mumsnet!

Give a little tip of the hat if you happen to find yourself reaching for that tin at the same time as another woman this afternoon. 👋

You don’t really want to know! I saw a documentary some years ago about how they remove it from tinned grapefruit, and I assume it’s a similar process.

All I can find is that it is dissolved off by a vegetable produced ingredient called pectinase? You can buy it on Amazon.

thinktwice36 · 23/02/2025 15:18

Mutti tinned tomatoes 🤌

I guess there must be different processes. This is the one I saw, using hydrochloric acid

Comtesse · 23/02/2025 15:46

Yes tinned cherry tomatoes are really nice - makes a very nice tomato sauce.

EleanorReally · 23/02/2025 16:19

stock in tesco for kidney beans etc., was very low this afternoon Hmm

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/02/2025 16:27

Ditto to rice pudding - and Fray Bentos pies. I always keep a couple for the odd time when I just CBA to cook - Dh and I have one each, just with frozen peas.

Rowena191 · 23/02/2025 17:19

@EleanorReally Thank you, looks like an excellent recipe.

I used to love John west stewed steak in a tin, gutted you can't get it anymore. Not found another version that compares

I might wrong but i am pretty sure Farmfoods stock that.

i do buy corned beef for dh but am always anxious about the sharp tin

I don’t use the key as the cans are lethal. I use a can opener on the top and the bottom and push the meat out whilst holding the can in a tea towel 😂

M&S chunky Chicken
Small tins of roast Red peppers from Spain

Tinned celery has a lovely mild flavour. I always think fresh celery tastes like gin, which I can't abide.

I like the flavour of gin! Thank you.

What do people do with a tin of chickpeas? I know they're so good for you but I never know what to actually do with them.

Heinz Lentil and Bacon Soup is lovely. Good protein source and filling.

good in soups, I make one with leeks, sweet potato and chick peas, whizzed down a little to break the 'peas' up

Partly as a result of answering that question myself earlier I made butternut squash, carrot and chickpea soup today, about half of it blended. The original recipe had broken up spaghetti and no chickpeas, I think I've improved it.

If it’s Epicure it’s likely to be good.

Vettrianofan · 23/02/2025 19:16

Mandarin tinned. Can't get enough of them.

Rice pudding, cold from the tin 😋

grapefruit segments

evaporated milk

I think also condensed milk might be good, which is used to make a Spanish latte (been meaning to try making this)

Savage

must be eaten hot 😂

BobbyBiscuits · 23/02/2025 20:15

@Goandygo Thank you! I'm overwhelmed by so many people giving great suggestions! ❤️

I felt like I craved tinned ravioli the other day too...I wasn't brave enough to try it as my dreams might be shattered?! I used to adore spaghetti hoops on toast as a student/teen. 🤣

SuffolkUnicorn · 23/02/2025 20:24

I had spaghetti hoops a while ago sauce is thin tasteless and watery now maybe I will try a different brand although these were Heinz
