Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

Yes, and I loved them!

Nuke in a saucepan cake 😂

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 23/02/2025 20:33

@AMurderofMurderingCrows It may be an interesting old 'classic' but corned beef is a quite highly processed food still. It's just become normalised so much that it's considered a staple. Same with pastry.

Fucking delicious, though.

Personally I cannot eat any tinned food, makes me gag

Translates to "Oh you commoners with your preserved food, eugh. I'm far too posh to touch anything that wasn't grown yesterday"
.

Heinz spaghetti - both in tomato sauce, and the bolognese varieties. Ditto for ravioli, but does anyone else find their tinned macaroni cheese uneatable ? I love macaroni cheese and only bought this once when l was pushed for time. It came out of the tin in a lump - tasteless and a revolting, slimy consistency.

*inedible

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 23/02/2025 20:44

@JingsMahBucket A small pie for 2 people = 1 large tin added to a few sliced onions and a sprinkled cube of oxo is the perfect combination. The large tins are £4.50 each but worth every penny! And I’m a very, very fussy eater.

Out of interest are you Irish? My ex mil was and used to say best butter

No I'm not Irish. It's just something we've always said😂 . Could be a regional thing ? (Lancs)

Clevs · 23/02/2025 20:55

Tesco chilli (far nicer than Stagg) - great for a quick meal on top of a McCain microwave jacket potato.

Mackerel fillets in spicy tomato sauce - great for lunch on top of toast.

Mixed bean salad for sprinkling over a green salad in the summer.

Toast Toppers (can you still get them?) for a tasty lunch, particularly the cheese & ham one.

Also from Lancashire and best butter was definitely a phrase. To be fair, Lancashire has a long-settled Irish population, fourth generation and inter-married in my case.

It is a pan made dish of potatoes, onion, carrots, turnip and square sausage in gravy. It is a Scottish dish that can cause serious arguments as every family as a different but the "right" recipe. Corned beef would never be put in my Stovies. Served with oatcakes is makes a lovely filling dish on a winters day.

Your recipe gives me the fear!

Tatties, onions and meat only, no extra veg. My mum always made it with leftover lamb or beef, I like it with link sausage and corned beef is also acceptable.

I was served chicken stovies once!😂

You're all makkin stovies wrong! 😮🤯

Chunks of beef, onion, floury tatties, maybe gravy too. Traditionally leftovers from the roast. Possibly a stray carrot, diced, and only eaten grudgingly. Corned beef, link or square sausage, other veg, these are all the Deil's work.
Heathens 🤣

(Lamb sounds good, mind)

Apricots.
Sardines in tomato sauce or olive oil
Black beans

Where are people getting artichoke in tins, not jars? Or figs?

SuffolkUnicorn · 24/02/2025 00:26

MsAdaLovelace · 23/02/2025 14:30

And how could I forget!

Cherry Tomatoes - great for making Moroccan Eggs

Sardines - for lunch on Sourdough or Rye with Spring Onions or Radish, Rocket, Chilli Flakes, Fresh Lemon Juice and Worcestershire Sauce

Off to find tins of Cherry Pie filling and Smoked Oysters now ...

Edited

What's a stovie?

Stovies - food of the gods, proper winter warmer 😋. Possibly called 'Corned beef hash' if you aren't in Scotland?

Boiled potatoes, cooked onion, oxo cube and tin of Corned beef. All mashed up together. Some folks also add in cooked sliced sausages, I don't like that though.

Fraaances · 24/02/2025 01:56

I’m not sure how available this is in the UK (am in Australia) These are amazing with eggs, warmed and served with guacamole & corn chips, with steak & cheese… You name it.

they sell them in Tesco

Tinned sausages as used by schools way back when. Delicious and nothing like those pale insipid Heinz beanz and sausages or breakfasts in a tin. My friend was head of an infants school & used to get freebies off the dinner ladies & we'd have school dinner night complete with steamed puds & jugs of custard. Wish I could find them now.

Cherry pie filling. I have a dollop of it on Greek yoghurt and it's sublime.

That's a great idea! A favourite dessert in Greece is sour cherries in syrup on yoghurt, Lidl sometimes have them in their Italian week, looks like this week here they've got them.

TheTempest · 24/02/2025 18:31

Tinned peaches with custard.

Had a friend who loved a tinned curry from M&S. I could never bring myself to try it.

I love love love tinned rice pudding, semolina and tapioca.

M&S tinned curry is awesome quite pricey now though

All the tinned fruit.

And Prince's pie fillings (already mentioned a couple of times). The cherry one is amazing when warmed up and spooned over vanilla ice cream.

I love the cherry pie filling. Haven't had for ages.. will add to this week's shop.:)

EleanorReally · 24/02/2025 18:55
