My brother is ex military.

He's been out a while now and he said way back then that voting leave would be the green flag for Putin to take that step over the line.

Whether that's why he did or not he wasn't wrong about him doing it.

Higher birth rates?

So I would love to see his policies for that.
And his attitude towards childcare, workers rights. education etc

Families. No mention of childcare.

@Bagpussnotbothered that is a very interesting angle and something I hadn't really thought about.

I am also more scared than I have been since the 1980s. I feel for all of you with relatives in the armed forces and/ or children/relatives of fighting age.

I don't think there will be conscription in the short term though (had a tetchy discussion about this on another thread where a bit of scaremongering was going on).

But in the longer term, if we really do enter WW3, then of course all bets are off. On the other hand, I can see the youth of today refusing to be conscripted and I would not blame them. Not just in the UK, but across Europe.

Lots of people talking about fear for sons in case of war. I’m not sure it’ll be just boys this time. Rightly in one way, but as a parent of a late twenties girl…

ThatbloodyRoblox · 18/02/2025 21:14

Hello all. Still here, still reading and I thank you all for keeping the threads going. I have been a bit "off Mumsnet" in general as things on the site have appeared a bit "off" for a little while now.
Please keep posting everybody, I really appreciate this thread.
@Blossomtoes I too feel unsettled just now... things seemed to be odd and all over the place. I too had JM as an Mp and although I am not a Tory voter he was a good Mp and talks a lot of sense see Brexit stuff too. ❤️
@DuncinToffee what are you thinking of your team and the new stadium? My husband has managed to listen to a match on the radio without resorting to turning it off and saying " oh well.." 😊

Evenstar · 18/02/2025 21:25

We have a son serving, very worrying times for everyone

DuncinToffee · 18/02/2025 21:31

@ThatbloodyRoblox haha, I know how your DH feels, it's nice to actually look forward to a match. Hope he didn't turn the derby match off before 98 minutes.
We watched the test event on youtube and the stadium looks amazing!

Hopefully someone explained the plot to the stinky one, with a spoiler warning, of course.

How can someone post that shite and not be in bother?
Does Musk believe it or is he stirring? Not sure which would be worse…

Almost enough to pine for the stability of the cold war. At least we knew where the lines were drawn.

I was in the military back in the 80s and the possibility of a nuclear war was made abundantly clear to us. It was quite a shock to me being a very naive 18yr old from the back and beyond. I can still clearly remember the videos we were shown and the training we were given.

Llttledrummergirl · 18/02/2025 22:33

We were on a military base in Germany in the 80s, on a ten minute leave alert at times. I remember being told to stay close to home.

Every time I check news coverage it gets worse.

Morten Morland summing it up.

I think the Lib Dems will take this as compliment

Kemi Badenoch acknowledges the existence of the Lib Dems

  • Considers them a “protest party for mainly people on the left”
  • "They are not on Twitter, but they are in local communities"
  • "They will destroy the whole country..."

I have seen that interview @PandoraSox , shocking.

There was a Trump shill on Newsnight last night claiming there are more people in prison in UK jails for freedom of speech violations than in Putin’s Russia.

Victoria Derbyshire was very good.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 19/02/2025 09:38

I had to watch his speech 3 times to check I was hearing right.

He's a massive cock.

I then felt more unease as Elwood was on tv talking about need for NS. They were talking about wartime footing and how this was like 1933 when many said they wouldn't agree to NS and then in 1939 were having to fight in a war.

They are talking about being prepared for WW3.

Have the leaders of the world learned NOTHING 🤬 it seems to me the US were helpful when they came into WW2. And now they are trying to start WW3

Lol at the escalation of the last statement. I imagine Ed Davies nodding along to the first two then punching the air and squeaking "HELL no!" for the last.

Piggywaspushed · 19/02/2025 09:57

I particularly love the sinister Reds Under the Bed connotation of the penultimate statement. Be afraid. Lib Dems are everywhere , even the CoOp.

dontcallmelen · 19/02/2025 10:02

Another one who feels incredibly unsettled & uneasy & I feel so much for any of you who have older children, my son served in the Iraq war I lived on my nerves for months at a time some more flowers for you all
