After Farage behaviour around the EU and in their Parliament it would be hugely difficult for him to engage I think - he's already laid out that for him it's the US to be on side with - I heard him say somewhere that without the US we are nothing. He'd be in a proper cleft stick if he was in gov't now - don't think even Musk's persuasion techniques could get the U.K. to agree Ukraine was the aggressor so let's be nice to Uncle Putin.
I've not heard him this last week which is pleasing and hope he 'defects' to the US sharpish!

Notonthestairs · 02/03/2025 19:21

That is a good picture. I'm sure every leader in the room today wondered whether how they'd manage in Zelensky's shoes.

I suspect Farage would find it difficult to not look like a mere US stooge in a situation like today. Could he liaise successfully with Macron?

I was interested to see Turkey was represented today.

The four steps to emerge from the #LeadersSummit :

  • To keep military aid flowing into Ukraine while the war is ongoing, and increase economic pressure on Russia

  • Any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and security, and Ukraine must be at the table for any peace talks

  • In the event of a peace deal, European leaders will aim to deter any future invasion by Russia into Ukraine

  • There would be a "coalition of the willing" to defend Ukraine and guarantee peace in the country

"We are at a crossroads in history today," Starmer said.

“This is not a moment for more talk – it’s time to act and unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace."

But what is the plan for peace?

What is a coalition of the willing?

Quierounlibro · 02/03/2025 19:24

This is just Starmers new growth plan isn't it?

Well that’s what they’re going to iron out.

Starmer has been nothing short of a national hero over the last week and I’ve gone from being ‘meh’ about him to glimpsing his genius. I think he has something in mind and is trying to convince the other leaders to follow him. I’m very impressed that he has seamlessly stepped into Trump’s shoes as ‘head of support network’ and seems poised to take on the burden of sorting it all out.

I’m glad he’s ignoring the UK MAGAs and is doing the right thing.

Quierounlibro · 02/03/2025 19:29

National hero? History will judge him on that

I listened to PM as I drove home this afternoon. This is the first time in my life I’ve had a sense of watching history being made. It’s the first time in a very long time I’ve felt a stirring of pride in my country.

"We are stepping up military support for Ukraine, while boosting jobs and growth at home."

Seriously?

Also he is prepared to put boots on the ground.

It's insane

Why? I find with these anti-Ukraine posts, they’re bare statements, with very little in the way of fact or explanation. Why is it insane, and why is it more insane than whatever alternative you propose?

Boosting our economy on the life or death of Ukrainians. How exactly is wanting peace in Ukraine, anti Ukrainian?
