I’d like to hear from the many republicans on here about how useless the monarchy is now.

There’s a difference between useless and anachronistic. I don’t think we should have a royal family in any position of power/influence, but we have one. Might as well see if they can contribute something. Doesn’t mean I don’t think the idea someone is special because of who they are descended from is anti democratic and archaic.

cakeorwine · 02/03/2025 17:23

The PM is not going to say the US is an unreliable ally, even if he thinks so.

Are people actually complaining about that?

Watching the news conference.
Beth Rigby asked that question.

Robert Peston asked if we were at war with Russia

Do we remember Edward VIII?

You take the Royals you have....

(but don't want to derail)

He asked 2 questions...but it was a wasted question

derxa · 02/03/2025 17:38

He was got rid of.

So so so missing the point

I'll bite.

While we have a monarchy, then we should use them as our servants.

If we had no monarchy, I would be happy.

But we have. So what I want is irrelevant.

This is the misunderstanding. King Charles doesn’t need to be personally special. He is a symbolic figure.

You're missing the point, we don't yet know what role, if any, KC will play, its too soon to be shouting "God Save the King!"

But if he can now do some good, whats not to like?

Shouldn't be a contentious issue at this time... bigger fish to fry

A symbolic figure...who you have no control how that symbol is used and what they say.

It could easily have been Harry as the next King if circumstances had been different.

Would Trump have been so excited to see Harry - or would have been just as keen to be invited to see the King, regardless of who the person was?

But this is debate about the principle of a Monarchy and is best suited for elsewhere.

His life is pretty special based on nothing but who his mum was. That’s my point.

The monarchy is mostly not much use. On this one occasion it is a useful adjuvant to the main treatment.

itsgettingweird · 02/03/2025 17:52

I've just caught on on Newscast on bbc sounds. I like it because LK is one of the commentators and so you always get a rough analysis.

They played her interview with KS from this mornings LK.

Firstly WOW. I have a newfound respect for Starmer now. I always liked him but he's definitely the right man for this job.

Secondly it was very interesting to hear LK actually genuinely have respect for him. She was gushing at one point and then reminded the audience that she's obviously impartial. But I'm not sure how you couldn't respect Starmer often his interview. He didn't miss a beat.

The four steps to emerge from the #LeadersSummit :

  • To keep military aid flowing into Ukraine while the war is ongoing, and increase economic pressure on Russia

  • Any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and security, and Ukraine must be at the table for any peace talks

  • In the event of a peace deal, European leaders will aim to deter any future invasion by Russia into Ukraine

  • There would be a "coalition of the willing" to defend Ukraine and guarantee peace in the country

"We are at a crossroads in history today," Starmer said.

“This is not a moment for more talk – it’s time to act and unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace."

Rutte is saying more European defence spending announcements to follow .

Which should boost domestic economies.

You know that £2.26 billion the UK has found for Ukraine ? I sincerely hope the first thing Ukraine spends it on is UK companies defence products.

Starmer says it will be spent in the defence industries in Belfast.

Poor old Farage. Starmer has basically stolen his rhetoric about Plucky Britain etc and Farage can say nothing. He can't be too supportive of Starmer as it will piss off his mates. He can't criticise him as he will piss off his own supporters who love the Plucky Britain shtick.

All he can do is "ask questions". Not much use in a fucking crisis is it ?

"Where are all these fucking bombs coming from ?"

Yeah Nige. You'd have done well in the Blitz.

bombastix · 02/03/2025 18:18

Well here's a question; would anyone here have picked Farage over Starmer to do this job of uniting European leaders?

Serious times need serious leaders, whatever their domestic politics
