Not the NSA guy (that looks a bit like a young George Bush), the one that looks a bit "look Mom, I'm on TV".

JoshLymanSwagger · 20/02/2025 18:38

Neither Miller (bald guy) nor Waltz (Bush looky likey).

Turns out it’s Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett!

JoshLymanSwagger · 20/02/2025 18:52

@Igotjelly Yup. Just put CNN on and his name popped up.

Anyway, the smirking and delivery style made me think he's setting up a joke...or he thinks the whole damn thing is funny.

Stephen Miller

Stephen Miller's the one who does a credible imitation of those albino alligators that were rumoured to live in the NYC sewer system.

I didn't watch the briefing, but Kevin Hassett is the one The Bulwark referred to as conservatism's invincible ignoramus 😅

Igotjelly · 20/02/2025 18:57

Fuck me Trump will speak today at a Black History Month event. Surely that’s satire 😂

JoshLymanSwagger · 20/02/2025 18:57

Trump due to ramble at us in about an hour.

Yippee. I can hardly wait.
In other news, I've fitted my Bullshitometer with fresh batteries.

If your Bullshitometer is battery powered I think you're going to need a whole great warehouse full.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/02/2025 19:20

I thought Black History Month had been removed from the calendar.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/02/2025 19:28

Turns out it’s Google that removed it from the Google calendar after Trump threw his toys out of the pram about DEI.

The Senate just voted, 51-49, to confirm conspiracy theorist and election denier Kash Patel to be FBI Director.

ALL Democrats and two Republicans — Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski — voted NO.

51 Republicans voted YES.

TopPocketFind · 20/02/2025 19:58

It's just one poll but in a new Gallup poll Trump is 45-51 (-6) approve/disapprove, and -12 on the economy.

  • 6 recent polls have Trump underwater
  • 538 average has dropped 6 pts in past month
  • Highest disapproval of any President at this point in their Presidency #notwinning

@AcrossthePond55
We only went on a day trip
but without toilets and canteens and car park attendants
it will be absolute chaos

Yosemite is our 'local' park, relatively speaking. We haven't been in 'high season' for ages.

It's been horrendous in the tourist season for years. They really need to put a lower cap on daily visitors even when they're fully staffed. The Valley just can't manage the huge number of tourists and it's already taking its toll on the facilities and the environment.

Most of the food service is by concessionaire, so it should be fine as that's not impacted by the freeze. But you're right that 'janitorial' for the toilets and facilities and traffic control is going to be bad. SAR is going to be impacted because they usually have a great number of seasonals. And that's going to be a HUGE safety issue, Yosemite has a pretty big number of rescues during the summer.

I wouldn't be surprised if they only open a small number of reservation slots and restart the entry lottery this coming summer.

Fuck the batteries. You're going to need to hook that baby up to a nuclear power plant to keep up.

I really need to take a moment on this. This is an absolute disaster.

A vindictive liar who is open about wanting to send the FBI after people who insulted him in the past.

IF the mid terms happen
I hope that the spineless GOP representatives get what they deserve
and there is a special place in hell for Mitch McConnell

Will be interesting to see this play out. Conspiracy theories are all well and good when disempowered. As FBI Director who's he going to say is making the conspiracies?
It's the rich and establishment usually. Presumably he is rich and now is the establishment too.

From your keyboard to God's monitor.

McConnell announced his retirement today, not seeking reelection in 2026. KY is a pretty red state, but after 2 years of Scrotus/Musk's 'efficiencies' tearing apart the govt programmes for the lower income and most likely tanking our economy, who knows? There's a lot of poverty in KY, and most of the impoverished lean towards MAGA, although God only knows why.

Patel scares the shit out of me. He's not just a vindictive liar, he's a stupid, egotistical, vindictive liar. I'm sure the 'criminal element', terrorists, and the like are having big parties today.

pentangles · 20/02/2025 23:26

This, taken from a thread on Metafilter, disturbed me more than I can describe:

"Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is finally in a position to implement his dream goal of sending millions of Americans to "wellness farms".
The Trump administration has long focused on relocating immigrants and American prisoners into domestic and international concentration camps and prisons, but now they are looking to expand it to much wider swath of American citizens with a variety of medical conditions, as well as African American children.

Medical conditions under consideration include:

  • Chronic illness
  • Autism
  • ADHD, and medication including Adderall and Ritalin
  • Asthma
  • Obesity
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Psoriasis
  • Mental illness such as depression and anxiety, and SSRI medication including Prozac and Zoloft

Instead of letting people have drugs that keep them healthy, Kennedy's "solution" looks very much like punishing them for perceived personal failures by putting people into labor camps, which he euphemistically calls "wellness farms." As Mother Jones reported in July, people would be relegated to these "farms," where they would be denied their prescription medications. They would also be barred from having cell phones, computers, or other means to contact the outside world. They would be put to work full-time, presumably for little or no pay, growing organic food. He claims this process would "reparent" supposedly broken people, again framing mental health issues as not a medical issue, but a personal failure."

Dear god.

I can't say what the objective is as would need to do a bit more research into the sources, but it is a worrying concept nonetheless.

And you know, there are people even here on MN who think we have too many sick and disabled people 'languishing'....It doesn't take much to alter people's perceptions when the Overton window gets shoved too far to one side - what we would once have balked at can become acceptable again, given time.
That concerns me the most, on a global level, not just the USA.
