With a side order of Vance, Zuckerberg and Netanyahu.*

Oh God. We have to transit via Houston next month. 2 long layovers so I've told DH we're taking cereal bars and drinking water from refillable bottles rather than giving US businesses our cash unless Trump does an about turn. Not going to have any effect on the US GDP but any food would stick in my craw.

I’d be masking up too given the bird flu and denial of existence of / failure to properly deal with it .

countrygirl99 · 01/03/2025 17:53

@Donttellempike doing sone birdwatching, would hate to give a roseate spoonbill or a frigate bird the flu

Spandauer · 01/03/2025 18:18

Vance not popular in Vermont.

You know, I've been thinking back to pre-WWII and that period when the US was hell bent on neutrality. Europe had to 'look to itself'. I think I know now how part of the US citizenry felt, so angry and helpless at the US turning its back on Europe and the storm on the horizon. And how they must have hoped and prayed that Europe would be able to fight Hitler, or that our Country would wake up and do what was right. It took Pearl Harbor to open up the eyes of the Nation to the need to fight fascism and dictatorship.

What is it going to take now to realize that Ukraine is just the first step for Putin? When are those who are brushing their hands and saying "Not our problem". Because it's going to become our problem if Putin has his way.

Trump is basically a 'Manchurian Candidate' made real.

I hope the Summit goes well and is fruitful. And bless Charles for showing solidarity in the main way he can.

A guest at Sandringham, no less. Any guess as to Trump’s reaction? His head will explode. 🤯

God willing 🙏

Yeah. Let us know how that worked out for y'all.

Mind you, this time it's difficult. When Putin bombs Pearl Harbour, Trump and Vance will be apologising for having those US navy ships in the way of his missiles. Heck, they'd probably refund him.

Incidentally, "Look to yourself" certain has resonances to true Brittunculus. It's what the Romans said as the duty free sailed for the last time.

Edited

It didn't. That's my point. As Lincoln said "We must hang together or most assuredly we will all hang separately". And Trump seems to be hell bent on hanging the US.

Hell, when the new Pearl Harbor comes, Trump and Vance will be supplying the maps and pointing out the best routes.

I just hope that if/when this is all over that Europe remembers that not all of us supported Trump, that many of us are screaming as loud as we can. Hopefully 4 years from now when we come hat in hand that Europe will give us the benefit of the doubt.

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/03/2025 18:57

If there’s going to be a Pearl Harbour type first step I’m kind of hoping it’s invading Alaska. Just for Trumps confusion as he realises the big ocean didn’t help.

My guess is it’ll be something more technical.

What do we think about the idea of Trump deliberately humiliating Zelensky because his talks with Putin went badly and he’s trying to make Z the fall guy for peace talks falling through?

I can't be the only one replying "Hell, yes". Same way Remainers hope Europe realises we know what a mistake that Brexit referendum was.

CaveMum · 01/03/2025 19:20

@AcrossthePond55 whilst I get what you are saying sadly I think it’s the case that the trust is gone for at least a generation. How can the rest of the world be sure that the guy after the next one (or the one after that, etc) won’t pull the rug out a la Trump.

The established order of the last 80 years has been that whether Democrat or Republican, the man in the Oval Office has adhered to accepted social norms and demonstrated a moral compass. That’s been blown out of the water in just 40 days.

Igotjelly · 01/03/2025 19:24

I have so much empathy for decent American people, living under this tyrant must be awful and terrifying. I think at a country to country level the trust will be gone for a long time but then you look at how far relations have come with Germany in only 80 years.

I think the orange one was stressed, he’s a total wanker anyway but I think he’s promised Putin big time and is not delivering.

I don’t think he would have chosen to display his crass bullying on screen? Who knows?

I don t think it’s going as swimmingly as the orange waste stain thought.

Musk is there to do the work, Trump just wants to settle old scores and play golf.

TopPocketFind · 01/03/2025 19:58

A Tesla dealership in Manhattan has been occupied by protesters chanting “Zelenskyy is a hero.”

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 01/03/2025 20:32

Just a random thought. Never mind how sprightly and bright they may seem to be, no-one over 70 should be allowed to stand for election to high office, even for a second time. (I'm almost that age, so am not being ageist, I promise.) They should retire gracefully and the youth (under 70) should get on with it. The US would never have got into this mess had there been an upper limit for the age of the President. As we can plainly see, age does not equal wisdom.

Serpentstooth · 01/03/2025 22:08

Well done, people of Vermont, I wouldn't want Vance near us either. Poor old Bigly, he promised Vlad he'd personally sort out Ukraine and hasn't delivered. And Zelensky is, unexpectedly and before Bigly, popping in for tea with the King this weekend. Bet Donald's mafia minions are feeling his wrath today.

Nine people arrested at a Tesla dealership in NY where hundreds were demonstrating against Musk.
Ditto demonstrations at Tesla in Jackonsville, Florida, Tucson, Arizona and many other cities.
Banners saying... "Burn a Tesla. Save Democracy" and "No Dictators in the USA"

This is an organised group saying "Detaching Musk from Tesla would be a meaningful blow against this administration and its prerogatives, because it would be a strike against what they hold most dear: money and power"

What I would like to happen is... Tesla sales drop so rapidly it eventually folds. And alongside that Musk is out on his ear and is ostracised.
A girl can dream can't she...

Starmer on Laura Kuensberg saying that Europe will work out the terms of a deal then take it to the US.

Sounds like Vance's ski weekend is ruined - hopefully he gets snow in his boots. May the protests grow.

SNL - Mike Myers as Leon is worth a watch.
