Anyone remember Music Star ?

Weepixie · 08/02/2025 01:34

My brother worked on Jackie for several years in the 70's ( was deputy Ed for a while) ...his dog was used on several fashion photshoots
got loads of freebies as part of his job! ...he got me into The Body Shop when they had a promotion in the magazine for essential oils as it had just started in Brighton
my best friend at school turned down an English degree at Edinburgh University in order to work on Jackie when she left school

My teenage sweethearts sister was the Jackie agony aunt. I don’t know if she was the only one though or if some of her colleagues shared the role with her. It was during the early 70’s as well.

Weepixie · 08/02/2025 01:36

Ahh yes, Twinkle to Bunty to Jackie, there was a Mandy I think as well

Also a Judy, and I think I can recall a Diane as well.

Loved Jackie in the 70s. Poster of David Cassidy with his horse on the back of my bedroom door. Happy days.

Me too! I loved the poster of David Cassidy on my bedroom wall.

I loved Jackie. My friend got Blue Jeans so we'd swop during the week. My DM decided Jackie was acceptable but didn't like Blue Jeans at all and wouldn't let me buy it so swopping was the only way to get my hands on it. I can't remember the difference really, perhaps Blue Jeans was racier! I've still got my 1980 Jackie annual.

the 4marys paled into insignificance when stept up a level to jackie! blue eyeliner ,fringes, adam ant....and the problem page cathy n clare. THAT was used as a form of torture,i shared room with big sister.Every weds evening -id go to bed n discover ANOTHER letter, using my "forged"hand writing requesting advice about ridiclous horror style invented issues... claiming things as basic as fancying (full name and that of school) boys that I very didnt...or "everyone knows i'm really good at gymnastics so they dont even watch me anymore. Will i get in trouble if i ever get caught do handtands against the wall when i have no pants on? " or "my pubic hair is straight/am i a freak? it is nearly reaching my knees... She would tell me it was duplicate of one she sent to Cathy\Claire and would be in thursdays mag... worse, fake signed my full name, date of birth and adress.
NOT once did i doubt her,not once did i notice NOBODYS full name/dob/address got printed. I bit every time-full hairpull scream demon event, me sobbing hysterically and let me get full row off mum\dad n deemed horrible temper child.. no way i was telling them tho
NOT once did she do it,BUT probly was entry level intro that percieved fear\horror is as bad as actual fear\horror.

Snap! I have that annual. I think Blue Jeans had those picture stories maybe that made it a bit racier? Nothing better than a magazine your mum didn’t want you to read.
Mu mum’s hairdresser used to let me pick a magazine from the pile in her salon when I was 12/13. I always picked Cosmopolitan, which then got passed around. It was like another world.

I loved it.
I went from Bunty to Jackie, to J17

I think that was the traditional route (though I think I stopped after Jackie).

One of my Uni friends was in one of their photo dramas/stories whilst she was at school.

I suppose that we didn't really have much in the way of kids TV, but it's sad that teen comics aren't still a thing (or perhaps they are?).

Wishimaywishimight · 08/02/2025 08:32

I started with Twinkle and made my way to Jackie via Mandy, Jinty, Tammy and Misty!

Before the days when newsagents did same or return, a huge treat iwould be when our corner shop put out a huge box of old magazines and comics and sell for 2p. Heaven to a child like me. As a teen I spent all my pocket money on Smash Hits, Just 17, Mizz and Number 1. I thank Smash Hits for my phenomenal recall of lyrics and only stopped buying it when Take That split up when I was 24!

Same! And then More after J17.

Loved Jackie though. I felt grown-up reading it!

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 08/02/2025 10:08

I can remember waiting for Smash Hits to come out so I could decipher the lyrics to Town Called Malice by The Jam. Still love the song now and know all the words.
The amount of time we spent singing the wrong lyrics before Google….
One thing I do remember is most of us had greasy hair times we tried to fend off, spots, make up
application that was DIY as was our hair.
Only pop stars were expected to look perfect and even they didn’t - I saw an early Madonna video yesterday and she looked like a bag of rags. Fabulous!

Yes! FAB 208 with all the DJs from Radio Caroline

Fab208 was linked with Radio Luxembourg. 208 was the wave it was broadcast on.

You're right, I forgot it was Radio Luxembourg rather than Caroline.

Happy memories of a lot of the magazines mentioned. ❤️

bendmeoverbackwards · 08/02/2025 21:11

I did read Jackie but not every week.

My absolute fave comic/magaziine was Girl which I read every week from the ages of 9-12. Brilliant photo stories especially the school and ballet ones.

Then I moved on to Just 17.

witwatwoo · 08/02/2025 21:30

I remember Girl ! Entered a competition to appear on the cover ! Didn't win !

Excellent!

The desirable male characters always had to be called "Chris" or "Steve" 😁

DH's character was called Craig, and he was a shy, clumsy lad who had no luck with girls 😆

Deathraystare · 10/02/2025 11:14

Jackie and Fab 208 here but my friend gave me Bunty as well after she read it. I loved the cut out dolls!!!

2JFDIYOLO · 10/02/2025 11:34

I still have some vintage Girl annuals - loved the Belle of the Ballet stories.

My OH is a big Dan Dare and Eagle fan.

hookiewookie29 · 10/02/2025 13:38

Absolutely loved it! My favourite magazine! My friend actually bought me the 60th Anniversary book for Christmas!

Or was it Smash Hits? I had loads of those under my bed. I remember avidly learning the lyrics to Ca Plane Pour Moi.

feathers7 · 10/02/2025 22:45

I remember starting with Bunty, followed by Tracy for girls, Girl magazine and then Blue jeans, and Jackie. J17 after that.
