Yes I loved it, although I'm going to be honest I think I loved Bunty, Mandy, and the beano more!
This Christmas my adult DC bought me a Jackie annual!

They were all so wonderful. The stories were so much more interesting than actually living through the late 70s and early 80s in a small village.
I loved the way the good looking boy would just appear from nowhere. It totally coloured my whole expectation of life. I spent years on the gay scene looking for handsome strangers, to be fair so did everyone else on the scene. It was all very love is a stranger in an open car.
But I'm convinced all of us had read Jackie as teenagers.

IdaPrentice · 07/02/2025 22:56

I never bought it but used to read friends' copies (in the early 80s). Jackie magazine was how I learnt about sex and relationships! (I dread to think now) I remember the photo stories and the problem pages

Beano then look in then Jackie!
Then Smash hits to Just 17 to more/Mizz
Then onto Company and Cosmopolitan with the odd dabble with Heat
Then Red and Glamour
Then GH
And now I've given up!

sazzy5 · 07/02/2025 23:09

I was actually in one of the photo stories in Jackie back in the day. My mum signed me up for it. I was hugely embarrassed at school as everyone saw it.

WillimNot · 07/02/2025 23:11

I still miss Smash Hits and Just 17
I actually put my ability to hear a song once and know the lyrics to Smash Hits

drspouse · 07/02/2025 23:11

The photo stories! And the tips! You've taken me right back.

I was on the Beano then Jackie then Smash Hits trajectory.

Does anyone remember Hi!? It was around in the late 80s and early 90’s.

Yes! In fact that may have been the first teen magazine I read. I had it from the very first issue. Think the free gift was a pair of plastic hoop earrings 😄

Read More at uni, mid 90s with 'position of the fortnight' (blush)

Oh yes 'More' that was all very racy, I was mid way through secondary school, I remember the girls sat at the back of class would discuss 'position of the fortnight'...wondered if they actually were having sex (I certainly wasn't) with anyone!

TurquoiseDress · 07/02/2025 23:17

I don't remember getting Jackie but did read it at the GP surgery I recall

It was all Mizz and Just 17

Then More and Sky magazine a bit later

TurquoiseDress · 07/02/2025 23:18

Ooh not forgetting Smash Hits!

Helpagirlout222 · 07/02/2025 23:19

Oh god the free gifts! I still have a comb that came from glamour mag!

You used to get some good stuff by signing up for 6 month subscriptions too!

drspouse · 07/02/2025 23:23

I don't remember More but I was at uni in the late 80s and I started reading Company at some point, a milder Cosmo.

justasking111 · 07/02/2025 23:28

I remember a company you could sign up to to get a box of sample make up etc every month or so. I signed up to that for a while.

ZiggyZowie · 07/02/2025 23:37

Yes, I'm 66, I loved Jackie.

Centrefold poster of David Cassidy.

They did some good free gifts too, a bangle one week I remember.

PandyMoanyMum · 07/02/2025 20:21

Ohhhh, I loved the photo stories. Gave me some rather unrealistic expectations about relationships, but hey ho! Happy memories of writing fake letters to Cathy & Claire and hoping to get published 🤭

My brother in law used to model for the photo stories 🤣

Icequeen01 · 07/02/2025 23:53

I remember Jackie but I preferred Diana. I'm surprised this one hasn't been mentioned already - it was around in the 70s. The poorer cousin to Jackie but it still had loads of David Cassidy posters etc. I've still got some of the annuals in my loft.

Icequeen01 · 07/02/2025 23:57

Just seen that Diana was early 70s so may be before your time!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/02/2025 23:58

Yes! FAB 208 with all the DJs from Radio Caroline

Fab208 was linked with Radio Luxembourg. 208 was the wave it was broadcast on.

Hotchocolate19 · 07/02/2025 23:59

I remember Twinkle, Diana, Bunty, Jackie , Fab208 and also Mirabelle. I used to buy any that had Osmond posters in them.

Jux · 08/02/2025 00:01

I got it religiously for a lot of my early teens in the 70s. A girl in my year featured in an advert in it ("the lesser spotted bird" I think). She was so pretty.

There were no ohoto stories that I remember, but picture stories - drawn.

MrsAvocet · 08/02/2025 00:52

I never got it myself, but my elder sister did in the 70s and I used to sneak into her room to read it when she wasn't there. By today's standards the content was all pretty tame of course but for an 8 or 9 year old in the mid 70s it seemed very grown up and positively scandalous!

Soonenough · 08/02/2025 00:54

I used to get Jackie every week too as did most of the girls in school . Used to dream of mixed schools and going to Youth Club dances from our convent school. One edition I always remember is centrefold of Starsky and Hutch . No problem getting the two Starsky ones fir the complete poster but the David Soul one sold put so fast I only got one half . The bottom half which was no good at all.

Silvercoconut · 08/02/2025 01:27

Oh I remember my Jackie magazine plopping through the letterbox every Thursday morning.

I was always so excited and would always read through the whole magazine on my way to school!
I didn't know any boys as I went to an all girls school and I was terrified of them, but I still had to learn how to kiss. 😀
I would sit on the top deck of the bus, and put on my very sticky cola flavoured roll on lip gloss in the little glass bottle.
And try to apply a little bit of Miners khol pencil to my waterline without a mirror!
Used to love Miners makeup, readily available in Woolworths

Thursdays used to be so great, Jackie magazine in the morning, Top of the Pops in the evening.

2JFDIYOLO · 08/02/2025 01:30

I also went from Twinkle to Bunty to Jackie ... Rites of passage 🤗

My mum was aghast at the last change, at about 13. I do get it now; seeing your child suddenly lurching from one stage to the next 😥

I loved the fashion and story drawings; I was a bit before My Guy etc came in with the photo stories. Cathy & Clare. The quizzes. How to do a manicure. The whole 70s fashion thing. The posters - I had Donny Osmond, Marc Bolan and glam rock, Bay City Rollers, Starsky & Hutch, disco.

This was where I chimed in with my friends - but there was a whole other mag strand at the same time, that marked me as a bit odd, which was all about Star Trek, Dr Who, Space 1999, Blake's 7, Star Wars, Close Encounters ... There was nowhere near as much sf around then as now so when magazines like Starburst and the Star Trek poster mag appeared - wow. I still have the first few years Starbursts.

Just remembered Popswop and Music Star, too!

Then another lurch, and I went onto Company magazine, which ushered in my 6th form student days and onto uni, then Cosmopolitan as I got my first job and strong 80s perfume was my main obsession ...

I used to buy all the fashion mags ... Very seldom now, but these days it's more likely to be Woman & Home - if I ever do!
