Were you aware of Johnnie Boden’s affiliation with the hunt? Would it stop you from buying clothes from Boden?

I was sent this email this morning. I’ve just ordered from Boden, but I’ll be sending the dress back. Annoying, as it was a bargain in the sale, and is just what I wanted for my son’s wedding. I just couldn’t wear it though- now I know.

Would something like this stop you from buying from them?

Hardly an unbiased article is it?

PauliesWalnuts · 06/05/2025 11:50

Doesn’t bother me. I have far more of a problem with companies like Amazon and EBay who squirm out of paying the correct amount of tax, so I boycott those.

Comtesse · 06/05/2025 11:58

It wouldn’t bother me at all.

cherrymaoam · 06/05/2025 11:58

I am an infrequent shopper but yes it has put me off them. I know that it’s just one small example of a wealthy businessman doing something that goes against my own moral code (Michelle Mone, Philip Green etc) but animal cruelty really does turn my stomach.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/05/2025 11:59

It most certainly would. I think the hunt is vile.

Weepixie · 06/05/2025 12:00

No. It wouldn’t stop me buying from Boden.

I haven't fully thought this through so bear with me but... with eating meat, the reason for eating it is to fuel our bodies. But with hunting, the reason for killing is human pleasure which seems perverse. At least if the fox skin was used, there'd be more of a reason. I say this as a veggie. I just can't ever imagine saying to myself, "I know what I fancy doing today, I'll get on a horse and kill a fox!" Also, it seems very labour intensive as a way of keeping fox numbers down.

No one actually needs meat to fuel their body! You eat meat because you enjoy it. At least admit that?
Do you honestly think the animal killed gives a shit about the purpose of its death? Food, sport , it’s all the same. And yes I’m a meat eater.
You are kidding yourself if you think meat eating is somehow worthier than blood sport.

tuvamoodyson · 06/05/2025 12:02

No…never buy Boden, but it wouldn’t stop me from doing so if I saw something I liked.

Fox hunting was banned 20 years ago. If he is hunting (or supporting hunts) that are acting within the law then I would not have an issue.

Well that’s the £60 million question. He’s not going to admit to not sticking to the law. Same as my local hunt always insisted they stick to the law. But they got prosecuted for breaking the law due to irrefutable proof on camera. They break the law every week, getting evidence is hard.

Presumably you don't buy goods from China or anywhere else with appalling human rights issues?
Or do you just hate those who are associated with animals?

I reckon most of us who would boycott a brand for supporting blood sports probably are also mindful of fast fashion, sweatshops and human rights abuses. People can have more than one moral principle. Did you think you’d scored some sort of gotcha? You haven’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh, childish response alert. Well done you
Experiental learning from here shows that few have any moral principles when it comes to their convenievce/honesty/entitlement

I'm a vegetarian so I don't eat meat.

Fair enough. I have every respect for your views. My point was to those who happily eat meat but simultaneously view hunting as abhorrent. I think that’s hypocritical.

thecatneuterer · 06/05/2025 15:41

I wasn't aware. Now that I am I won't buy (and I do normally get a few sale things)

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/05/2025 16:11

MrsKeats · 06/05/2025 00:58

More and more I do yes.

To an extent, we do. Won’t buy a Dyson, go to a Wetherspoons, etc.

WellyBellyBoo · 06/05/2025 16:12

Thanks for highlighting this. I'll never buy from them again.

No & no.

I have zero interest in Mr Boden’s leisure pursuits. Assuming he is hunting within the law, it’s none of my business.

The article says that two of the people from the hunt that he supports (he is a lifelong member) have been convicted of illegal hunting.

Voting with our feet/pocket absolutely makes a difference. The majority of people in the UK support the ban, and if they all stop buying from Boden then it will hurt.

Bad things continue when good people say nothing.

People are allowed to have priorities and preferences. And individually perhaps there's only so much one can do.

I'd far rather consumers took a stand about something rather than absolutely nothing.
