Were you aware of Johnnie Boden’s affiliation with the hunt? Would it stop you from buying clothes from Boden?

I was sent this email this morning. I’ve just ordered from Boden, but I’ll be sending the dress back. Annoying, as it was a bargain in the sale, and is just what I wanted for my son’s wedding. I just couldn’t wear it though- now I know.

Would something like this stop you from buying from them?

Only ever bought kids clothes from them, but now I know this I will never order anything from them again. Thanks for the heads up.

No it wouldn’t put me off, although I’m not sure I’ve ever bought anything from there anyway. I try to avoid shops/brands with known links to things like slavery/child labour etc, so I’ve never bought temu or shein crap. But that’s about the business, so tbh unless the clothes are made of fox skin, the morals of every CEO/business owner is just not something I have the energy to get involved in. And honestly I find people who eat meat getting sanctimonious about hunting very tedious.

I haven't fully thought this through so bear with me but... with eating meat, the reason for eating it is to fuel our bodies. But with hunting, the reason for killing is human pleasure which seems perverse. At least if the fox skin was used, there'd be more of a reason. I say this as a veggie. I just can't ever imagine saying to myself, "I know what I fancy doing today, I'll get on a horse and kill a fox!" Also, it seems very labour intensive as a way of keeping fox numbers down.

Riverswims · 04/05/2025 19:11

no and yes. torturing animals isn’t “sport”

GCAcademic · 04/05/2025 19:35

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 04/05/2025 18:22

@GCAcademicmost rural people do not detest hunting. You are talking through your backside.

OK, most of the rural people I know (and I’ve lived in a rural area for a long time) detest it. They are mainly farmers, though.

TheCurious0range · 04/05/2025 19:38

I didn't know but it really doesn't surprise me. It won't stop me shopping there, I don't know the ins and outs of the moral and political beliefs of most large businesses owners. I think you'll find there is something morally dubious about most of them.

Stopped buying from them years ago when the quality of the materials went waay downhill but the prices still went up!

Same here, I stopped buying years ago when the quality was poorer but If the quality was good knowing he supports hunting I'd be stopping buying boden

Exactly. Same here and with all the country people in my area too.

Buzyizzy217 · 04/05/2025 20:47

You can afford Boden’s? 😞

LizzieSiddal · 04/05/2025 20:54

I despise people who support fox hunting. And I live in the countryside and used to be a farmer.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/05/2025 20:54

Yes and yes. Haven’t gone near Boden since I found this out.

Foxes are bred for fox hunting. It’s so very unpleasant. If animals do need to be killed to control numbers , they should be shot cleanly by a skilled marksman , not hunted until exhausted & torn apart by dogs .

sprigatito · 04/05/2025 20:56

Ugh how utterly repugnant. I would never buy that stuff anyway, but if I were that way inclined it would certainly put me off.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/05/2025 20:58

I'm not a Boden shopper but this wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

toffeeappleturnip · 04/05/2025 20:58

I didn't know.
I've bought in he past but I won't again.

Their clothes are dull anyway.

CanYouTurnItDown · 04/05/2025 20:59

I didn’t but I won’t be buying from them again

Wednesdaysotherchild · 04/05/2025 21:00

Yes, absolutely, I abhor hunting in all its forms.

namechangeGOT · 04/05/2025 21:08

Katherineryan1986 · 04/05/2025 18:47

No it wouldn’t bother me and I am not anti hunting either. Hunts that I have followed do follow the rules and trail hunt now, which is actually really good fun. People need to get their facts straight and maybe experience a trail hunt meet for themselves.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

If you believe that you are the most gullible person on Mumsnet.

namechangeGOT · 04/05/2025 21:09

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 04/05/2025 17:30

No. I’m not anti hunting.

You’re not anti-shit clothes either if you buy from Boden!

ODFOx · 04/05/2025 21:32

Hunting isn’t as bad as the meat industry and both are less hard on animals and the environment than the dairy industry and arable farming.
I eat meat, dairy and farmed vegetables so I’m already doing more harm to animals and the environment than hunting. I used to buy Boden back in the 90s/00s but stopped because my style and theirs doesn’t match any longer , rather than what their founder does on the weekends.

HausofHolbein · 04/05/2025 21:39

OP, thank you. like a PP, I had a full basket, ready to go.

I will not give someone who takes pleasure in torturing an innocent a single penny. I despise those who hunt foxes.

(And yes, I am life-long vegetarian, etc)

Whereismyjoiedevivre · 04/05/2025 21:40

No and no

HausofHolbein · 04/05/2025 21:44

And can I say, anyone who supports fox hunting is a complete c*

Delete me if you want MN, but the law is on my side.

herbalteabag · 04/05/2025 21:46

I have only ever bought one thing from Boden but after having read this I won't buy anything else.
I'm completely against hunting for sport and I have been a vegetarian for 37 years.

user1497787065 · 05/05/2025 04:51

i live rurally and no, this doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Johnnie Boden lives reasonably close to us and is very supportive of any local events and is happy to donate gift vouchers for school event raffles etc.

However, I will not buy cheap fashion, eg Primark.
Morally, I won’t buy a child’s dress which costs the same as a coffee in the shop next door.

MrsKeats · 05/05/2025 18:14

He also supported Brexit so it’s a big no from me.
