Add your contenders but mine is Ralph Fiennes, I'm hoping this will be his year.

I’m also hoping Ralph Fiennes wins this year. He’s got immense range and it feels well overdue.

He was totally snubbed for Grand Budapest Hotel, not even getting nominated. Should have won for Schindler’s List. Seems weird that he was beaten by Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive.

Having said that, I will be surprised if he does. I’m assuming Adrien Brady will win again, and if there’s an upset it will go to Timothee Chalamet (who, to be fair, is brilliant as Bob Dylan). Fiennes’ performance in Conclave is also very low key.

Edited

I'm hoping Adrien Brody doesn't, he's good at playing gaunt holocaust victims but little else. Plus I'm not a fan of the fact he was in a Polanski film (which he did win for).

I agree with Saoirse, and in the recent Dylan film, totally forgot I was watching Ed Norton till the end.
I struggle to suspend my disbelief so that’s unusual for me.

GhostOrchid · 26/01/2025 14:45

Oh, I don’t want Adrien Brody to win. He’s already got one and he’s not an actor I particularly like, but he’s been winning all the other awards.

The Oscar's are based on such snobbery, that I think they are meaningless. Some of the best grossing movies of all time never even get a look in at the Oscars, never even receive a nomination, whereas those that bombed do - what the general public see as an excellent performance or a thrilling film, just doesn't translate to what the Oscar's bigwigs see as worthy.

There are some amazing actors out there that can really make you believe in a role, that can set a scene with a wiggle of their eyebrows, but if the film itself isn't one of the chosen, they'll never be recognised.

Lentilweaver · 26/01/2025 14:47

I think Jeremy Strong should win too. He's marvellous in everything.

westisbest1982 · 26/01/2025 14:51

Social media is a big factor these days. I think Jamie Lee Curtis and her team adeptly using it to her advantage probably gave her the edge on her nearest competitor that year (Angela Bassett).

Growsomeballswoman · 26/01/2025 14:54

I wish he would call himself Ralph and not Rafe! I love him though

thescandalwascontained · 26/01/2025 14:58

There are a lot of fabulous actors and directors and movies that have been 'overlooked' over the years. But at the same time, I don't think it's fair to shout that "X didn't get a nomination? How is that possible? It's not fair!" UNLESS you're willing to say who shouldn't have gotten one in the same category.

IF there are 5 slots for a nomination, there are 5 slots for a nomination. Which becomes problematic if there are 10 stellar, award-worthy performances... or directors. So IMO, if you want to moan about someone not getting nominated, you have to say who shouldn't have gotten one as well.

GhostOrchid · 26/01/2025 14:59

I don’t think Conclave will do that well, which further depresses Ralph’s chances. I was surprised Edward Berger missed out on a Best Director nomination (Conclave is really well directed) and Stanley Tucci missed out on a nod in the supporting actor category. I can see it winning Best Adapted Screenplay, and maybe Best Picture if the cards fall right.

Lentilweaver · 26/01/2025 15:00

I do think the best acting is to be found on prestige TV these days. Mark Rylance and Damien Lewis in Wolf Hall💓

Ah yes, Gilbert Grape and Willy Wonka are exactly the same people.

Gilbert was played by leonardo dicaprio

ShelfObsessed · 26/01/2025 15:04

Gilbert was Johnny Depp. Leo played Arnie.

I just read this to see if Keanu had won one and he's on this list

Agreed! Although I think Mark Rylance does have an Oscar as well?

GhostOrchid · 26/01/2025 16:00

He does. For Bridge of Spies.

Lentilweaver · 26/01/2025 16:04

Yes,he does. Oh good!

Boredoutofmyhead · 26/01/2025 16:16

Johnny Depp just doesn't play Johnny Depp.
When he started in 21 Jump Street ,he could have easily went down the route of pretty boy leading man.
He didn't,and I think that's what sets him apart.

Cry Baby,Edward Scissirhand,Ed Wood,Chocolate.
They are not the same .
He was done dirty the way Pirates ended but he lived that role.
That was obvious to see.

Boredoutofmyhead · 26/01/2025 16:17

Also Kevin Bacon is such a versatile actor.
He should ha e won for Sleepers but I'm jot sure if he was even nominated.

He was amazing in Sleepers, I read the book first and he was exactly as I had pictured the character. He has played some really challenging roles, surprised if he's never been nominated.

GlitchStitch · 26/01/2025 16:34

Just had to check, Kevin Bacon is on a list of best actors to have never received an Oscar nomination! But he has won Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild awards. He won quite a lot for The Woodsman, maybe that was too controversial for the Oscars because of the subject matter.

murasaki · 26/01/2025 14:23

Kidman, I'm looking at you. An Oscar for a prosthetic nose.

Charlize Theron deserved it for Monster, but I'm sure the look played a part in convincing them she can act not just look beautiful.

True but in fairness to Nicole, she has been Oscar-worthy in many performances. I think she's over-botoxed but she can be incredible: she was amazing in Birth.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 26/01/2025 16:47

I'm shocked to find out tomorrow cruise hasn't won one. Wtf

torreli · 26/01/2025 16:49

bifurCAT · 24/01/2025 18:47

Epli · 26/01/2025 16:58

Denis Villneuve
