Add your contenders but mine is Ralph Fiennes, I'm hoping this will be his year.

Yes I should think of women too.

Definitely agree with Michelle Williams.

Maybe a bit controversial but Oprah Winfrey. The few roles she's done have been outstanding, she's been nominated and won other awards but not the Oscar. I think she should have got Best Supporting Actress for The Butler.

Agree, I think she hasn't won because she's Oprah, if you see what I mean, the suits don't see her as an actress, even though when she does it, she's very good.

Tom Cruise 's only valid shout was for Magnolia, he was great in that. Otherwise, no.

Edward Norton is another great actor, nominated several times and never won. American History X and Primal Fear were amazing performances.

I wonder how they pick the winners, sometimes it seems like it's just someone's turn. Definitely felt like that with Leo.

In which case it's got to be Glenn Closes' turn soon!

Johnny Depp has only ever played Johnny Depp, and now his personal life and abusive behaviour will probably prevent him ever being offered an oscar worthy film.

THIS

LostittoBostik · 26/01/2025 13:59

Others have said it but Jim Carey

ThisHorse · 26/01/2025 14:00

Glenn Close. I was really shocked when she was nominated for her role in The Wife and the award went to Olivia Colman for The Favourite. I'd seen both films and thought Glenn Close very clearly gave the better performance.

I'd also love to see Hugh Grant win one.

I find Stephen Graham a tremendously moving and visceral actor. Feels like he should have an Oscar.

I agree he's such a brilliant actor.
He really needs a standout role in Hollywood to get him noticed.
He's so overlooked.

Sairose Ronan has had some amazing performances too.

Yes! She deserves one.

Sigourney Weaver and Laura Linney are another two i think have merited one.

This was the reason Jamie Lee Curtis got hers, the 'lifetime' approach. I like her but the idea that her performance bettered Kerry Condon in Banshees was absurd.

Glenn Close may unfortunately have missed her slot now. Shame as she's very good.

At the end of the day the Oscar voters only vote for a certain type of movie and performance. You could put in the best acting ever seen in a Michael Bay movie and you will never win. The best chance is to play a character from a minority group, preferably with a disability in a film so boring half the audience falls asleep midway through

Bonus points if you've gained/lost weight and 'uglified' yourself.

I agree with Jim Carey. Many of his roles I cannot imagine any other actor doing at all, he just owns them.

Also agree with Oprah, she has been nominated but deserved to win for The Colour Purple.

murasaki · 26/01/2025 14:23

Kidman, I'm looking at you. An Oscar for a prosthetic nose.

Charlize Theron deserved it for Monster, but I'm sure the look played a part in convincing them she can act not just look beautiful.

NewYorkherewecome · 26/01/2025 14:25

Bradley Cooper for either Silver Linings Playbook or American Sniper
Ryan Gosling for La La Land.

Agreed BUT… Oscars are, IMO, biased away towards heavy, meaningful dramas. And that’s fine, but when you watch Jerry Maguire, that scene in the living room - it’s golden. How HOW did he not win the Oscar for that. Similarly Top Gun. It’s a great film. The raw emotion when Goose dies, the humour in how he delivers his performance. It’s great. He’s the last great movie star.

On the same vein - how did Will Ferrell not get an Oscar for Elf? His performance is outstanding. It’s just wild how good he is in that movie.

Kevin Costner in the Bodyguard. I mean!!!! He is AMAZING.

Time was that I would watch all the nominations to see what I thought. I wouldn’t dream of it now - it’s too wrist slashy.

Imtheslimshady · 26/01/2025 14:33

I think the BAFTAS is a better indication of calibre or film and it's cast, the Oscars have become the also ran event now.

There is definitely snobbery when it comes to action, comedy and specific actors. Adam Sandler won several respected awards for Uncut Gems, with universal praise from critics, but wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. Obviously because of who he is.

He's bloody brilliant in Ed Wood, one of my favourite films ever

Loved The Butler. Forrest Whittaker should have got Best Actor for that film... It was criminally ignored. OW was excellent too!

Onlyonekenobe · 26/01/2025 14:39

Amy Adams. She’s the finest actress of her generation imo.

In a world of Nicole Kidmans, Adams is the North Star for what the craft and skill of intelligent acting can and should be.

GhostOrchid · 26/01/2025 14:39

I’m also hoping Ralph Fiennes wins this year. He’s got immense range and it feels well overdue.

He was totally snubbed for Grand Budapest Hotel, not even getting nominated. Should have won for Schindler’s List. Seems weird that he was beaten by Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive.

Having said that, I will be surprised if he does. I’m assuming Adrien Brady will win again, and if there’s an upset it will go to Timothee Chalamet (who, to be fair, is brilliant as Bob Dylan). Fiennes’ performance in Conclave is also very low key.

Except he wasn't the abusive one.
