Add your contenders but mine is Ralph Fiennes, I'm hoping this will be his year.

Another vote for Tom Cruise. He’ll never be awarded one though. They seem to dislike him.

The scouse lady should get one at some point. Jodie Comer

James McAvoy. He was brilliant in Split and Glass.

Totally, it was Oscar worthy performances in b movie films.

dreamingbohemian · 26/01/2025 13:20

Yes Willem Dafoe and Ralph Fiennes

Samuel L Jackson
Liam Neeson
Lawrence Fishburne

Colin Farrell has done some amazing work in recent years

Tom Cruise 's only valid shout was for Magnolia, he was great in that. Otherwise, no.

dreamingbohemian · 26/01/2025 13:23

Young Johnny Depp was a great actor, but he's been terrible for years not to mention a loathsome human being

Born on the 4th July, Rain Man, Jerry Maguire. He was the character. I didn’t think about him ‘acting’ (unlike dé Niro, Pacino etc. always ‘acting’)

Ah, you see i always see Tom Cruise not the character. Magnolia was the only one where I didn't, but saying that he was a cult person so not unlike his scientology self.

murasaki · 26/01/2025 13:26

But I agree with your views on de Niro and Pacino.

UnstableEquilibrium · 26/01/2025 13:27

For obviously Oscar-type performances in individual films then Glenn Close and Ralph Fiennes are the standouts.

But when we look back in fifty years time I think the failure to acknowledge the pure screen presence of Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood will look like shocking omissions. Indiana Jones is a magnificent performance, even though it didn't require Ford to howl, or cry or pretend to have Alzheimer's.

And tbh I think Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia deserved an Oscar for what she made of the frankly horrendous dialogue she had to work with.

UnstableEquilibrium · 26/01/2025 13:29

And I'd put in a shout for Bruce Willis in Die Hard. His contribution to that movie is every bit as great as Alan Rickman's. (Although it's mad that Rickman never even got an Oscar nomination).

Absolutely, I think a good action film actor can often be overlooked

Johnny Depp has only ever played Johnny Depp, and now his personal life and abusive behaviour will probably prevent him ever being offered an oscar worthy film.

Oh I don't know about him only ever playing himself - DD is 25 and she only fairly recently twigged that Johnny Depp played both Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow! We were watching Murder on the Orient Express at the time, and it took her a while to realise he was in that as well.

HarryVanderspeigle · 26/01/2025 13:32

Michael Caine admittedly won Oscars, so not technically meeting the brief. But his performance in muppets Christmas carol was a masterpiece and he was clearly disregarded because his costars were singing vegetables. Never been a better performance of Scrooge.

murasaki · 26/01/2025 13:32

Hugh Grant is putting in a good late career bid for one.

user1492538376 · 26/01/2025 13:34

Tom Cruise is not my favourite but agree he was great in Jerry Maguire. Also Jim Carey in Eternal Sunshine - an amazing film. Kirsten Dunst was also fabulous in Eternal sunshine - I dont think she has won an Oscar.

I’m also rooting for Mr Fiennes ☺️

Me too. Conclave was great and I can't believe he doesn't have an Oscar already.

CatsWhiskerz · 26/01/2025 13:37

Gary oldman
Johnny Depp

Yes, how no one from The Banshees of Inisherin won anything I don't know. Farrell and the other leads were all brilliant. Robbed.

Agreed! In Bruges as well.

needhelpwiththisplease · 26/01/2025 13:41

Gary oldman has an Oscar

murasaki · 26/01/2025 13:45

Interesting that the majority of names we are talking about are men. So I had a think, Michelle Williams definitely has deserved at least two. And Amy Adams.

GlitchStitch · 26/01/2025 13:45

Peter O'Toole (nominated 8 times and never won, how!!)
Donald Sutherland
John Malkovich
Clint Eastwood (won as director but never as an actor)

murasaki · 26/01/2025 13:46

Sairose Ronan has had some amazing performances too.

westisbest1982 · 26/01/2025 13:50

Ralph Fiennes has more amazing performances that weren’t nominated than the three that were. It’s crazy! I’m thinking of;

Spider
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The English Patient
A Bigger Splash
Coriolanus
Quiz Show
The Constant Gardener
In Bruges

He’s third in line this year to win according to pundits.

I also agree with Glenn Close. Thought she had it in the bag six years ago until Olivia Colman pipped her to the post.

70sShmeventies · 26/01/2025 13:51

I find Stephen Graham a tremendously moving and visceral actor. Feels like he should have an Oscar.
