To be pissed off at this lady on Vinted!?

As some of you may know, Metanium Nappy Rash Cream has sadly been discontinued. Apparently due to difficulties the company have in sourcing a certain ingredient, therefore making it hard for them to continue to produce it.

I know what MN can be like :) so before any one jumps in with 'well if you change your baby regularly enough, you won't need the cream' sort of bs, I change my baby very regularly but he has very sensitive and seemingly extra delicate, dry and eczema prone skin so every so often (and despite washing him after a poop instead of using wipes) he can get sore. Metanium worked wonders, it was my go-to and was highly recommended by doctors.

Any way, about a week ago (this has just been playing on my mind and I need to rant), I went on Vinted to see if anybody was selling any new tubes and there she was, a lady selling ONE TUBE (previously worth around £4) for £60. SIXTY POUNDS.

I get people cashing on in discontinued luxuries such as biscuits/chocolates or whatever. But seriously, I'm assuming this lady (judging by her other listings) is a mother of young children, who is cashing in on what some mothers genuinely see as a necessity for their babies wellbeing.

Any way, I messaged this lady asking how much (to see if she would miraculously say £4 or £5) but she replied '£50 is the lowest I can go'. I said how I felt about it and she replied words the effect that 'desperate mums will pay'.

We argued a bit and that was that.

But she is right, desperate mums probably would pay such price if their baby is bleeding from their genital area. It's fucking awful to be that greedy over a NAPPY RASH CREAM.

I'm still so fuming and needed to get it off my chest!!!

I used this cream when mine were little- it's brilliant - but not £50 brilliant. The seller is taking the piss but that's how vinted works so no point arguing with her.

I know this isn't what you are asking but a health visitor recommended using spray on wound covering on nappy rash for my eldest and it really helped.

BilboBlaggin · 24/01/2025 12:37

Some people are fucking greedy OP, and those that play on the desperation of others are the lowest of the low. Hopefully one day karma will bite her on the arse.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/01/2025 12:37

That is dreadful but sadly unsurprising.
Exactly the same thing happened during the early days of COVID with the tiny little tubes of hand sanitizer that usually retail for around £1. People were selling them on eBay at the time for £80 each 😯.
Unfortunately some people are just totally lacking in morals.

I sympathise with having a baby with delicate skin, but I think you’re being unreasonable here. Did you honestly expect her to drop her price that much!! Yes it’s overpriced, but if someone puts an item up for a price no matter how ridiculous, it’s highly unlikely they would reduce it by over 90%.

It sounds like you were gunning for an argument, she’s entitled to price her items how she wants, you don’t need to buy it, just scroll on.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 24/01/2025 12:41

I wouldn't dream of doing it, but some people lack morals, don't care and will monopolise on situations like this, because they can. They know that someone in desperate need may be willing to pay a price like that, so they chance it. It's awful and greedy, but there is not much you can do and I wouldn't waste my time getting angry about it.

fghbvh · 24/01/2025 12:45

I just had a google and someone is trying to sell a half used one for £35!

Have you tried the every day metamium? The white one? I actually found that one to be almost as good.

Feelingcrappy2 · 24/01/2025 12:50

Thank you @fghbvh, I do actually have that one and using it every change as a barrier in hope it helps to keep any redness at bay! £35 for a used one... honestly I'd be so embarrassed to do this!

I probably do just need to stop investing so much frustration into it but like I say, cashing in on discontinued items that aren't seen as a necessity I can understand and overlook, but other mothers cashing in on nappy rash cream is beyond me!

You could try asking on your local Facebook giving away/reuse page. We have a very active one and I saw someone ask for precisely this product and receive it!

Grumblebees · 24/01/2025 12:54

I suggest you report the listing to Vinted - this would be classed as commercial selling, and it is forbidden to sell with the intention of making a profit from a regular Vinted account, you have to have a Pro one. So the listing should've taken down, or the user banned which might make you feel better!

JellyFlooding · 24/01/2025 12:55

Weleda calendula cream is actually better

TartanMammy · 24/01/2025 12:56

She's greedy, but nobody is forcing anyone to buy it either.

NormaleKartoffeln · 24/01/2025 13:00

This is essentially how capitalism works, it's demand and supply.
I'd be inclined to blame the company for no longer producing it tbh.

alittlequinnie · 24/01/2025 13:01

I had this happen with my developer during covid on ebay. I was paying £12.99 for years and in covid they increased it to £109.99!

I reported it to ebay and they forced to seller to reduce it to about £25.99 I think.

Worth reporting to Vinted... otherwise you'll have to vote with your feet - but it is crazy pricing!

Beentoofar · 24/01/2025 13:07

We were recommended by SCBU staff to use Tena Wash Cream rather than water when changing. Also not cheap but worked wonders - maybe try it if you’ve not already?

But YANBU - I just hope she’s strapped for cash and that £50 would make a big difference to her rather than being greedy.

Sudocrem is magic cream for nearly every kind of skin ailment you can think of.

I'm still so fuming and needed to get it off my chest!!!

I remember my church giving me packets of loo rolls to give out in my block in lock down as the more frail or elderly literally had none!

I wad the door they knocked on when they ran out as well.

One neighbour said she was in a bubble with 5 members of family staying so I gave her enough for them all. Then they were on gumtree for £10 a packet !!!

People are greedy.

I'm not sure if it will help or not but when I was in radio therapy I was recommended aquaphor cream. Has a grease to it but my goodness it worked. I've used it for other things and also recommended it to people who now do the same. Could it be worth a shot .

Looks like it is available to buy online at this pharmacy with £4.99 delivery - I haven't used them so can't vouch for the company

This seems unlikely... she's got one tube of it. No different from her selling one of anything else for whatever price she wants.

OP, YABU for your messages trying to get a lower price.

Mumof1andacat · 24/01/2025 13:54

We always used Drapolene. Generally sold online now it appears but it's really good

They cannot sustainably source one of the ingredients ..which is why its discontinued. But yes.... supply and demand.

Why? People message me all the time trying to get a discount on things I'm selling (although I'm never asking anything anywhere near this over inflated price) and I never mind. If you don't ask then you don't get.

Normallynumb · 24/01/2025 14:26

I sympathise my DS1 used to get dreadful nappy rash that left him red raw despite changing very often and airing his bottom when possible
If I remember correctly I used Drapolene which had a pink label at the time
I don't know if it's still available as he's 30 now
I hope you find a suitable replacement

Examconfusion · 24/01/2025 14:30

Vinted are pretty hot on deletions. You should report it!

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 24/01/2025 14:36

She is disgusting and greedy. I can't abide people like this
