To be pissed off at this lady on Vinted!?

As some of you may know, Metanium Nappy Rash Cream has sadly been discontinued. Apparently due to difficulties the company have in sourcing a certain ingredient, therefore making it hard for them to continue to produce it.

I know what MN can be like :) so before any one jumps in with 'well if you change your baby regularly enough, you won't need the cream' sort of bs, I change my baby very regularly but he has very sensitive and seemingly extra delicate, dry and eczema prone skin so every so often (and despite washing him after a poop instead of using wipes) he can get sore. Metanium worked wonders, it was my go-to and was highly recommended by doctors.

Any way, about a week ago (this has just been playing on my mind and I need to rant), I went on Vinted to see if anybody was selling any new tubes and there she was, a lady selling ONE TUBE (previously worth around £4) for £60. SIXTY POUNDS.

I get people cashing on in discontinued luxuries such as biscuits/chocolates or whatever. But seriously, I'm assuming this lady (judging by her other listings) is a mother of young children, who is cashing in on what some mothers genuinely see as a necessity for their babies wellbeing.

Any way, I messaged this lady asking how much (to see if she would miraculously say £4 or £5) but she replied '£50 is the lowest I can go'. I said how I felt about it and she replied words the effect that 'desperate mums will pay'.

We argued a bit and that was that.

But she is right, desperate mums probably would pay such price if their baby is bleeding from their genital area. It's fucking awful to be that greedy over a NAPPY RASH CREAM.

I'm still so fuming and needed to get it off my chest!!!

I got excited when I spotted a yellow box of metanium on the supermarket shelf last week & thought maybe they'd managed to bring it back, but on examining the box & ingredients closely its the barrier cream / same as the white and purple one just in a different package. If you see a yellow box, it isn't the yellow stuff!

A PP has posted a link to the ointment online - still available for sale at just over £5.

MrsCarson · 29/01/2025 14:39

The Metanium barrier ointment is on Amazon
Bepanthen is great too.

I think you are being unreasonable. Yes it's extremely over priced and ridiculous but it's her property and that is what she will sell it for as it's in demand. You never know that £60 might pay for alot of stuff she could otherwise not afford that is also essential like food or clothes

You say that but if you remember when something similar happened during covid when sellers were doing this on basics, there was a call for those who did this to be banned from selling. Theres supply and demand and then there's theft and abuse of selling power.

As I said; There is a difference between intentionally buying to sell on later at an inflated price or charging a high price for one item you have spare that has suddenly increased in value.

Plenty of those selling hand gel for silly money during early Covid noticed that demand was increasing so bought in bulk to sell on a couple of months later when the price went up.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 29/01/2025 14:49

I do absolutely love metanium but I don’t fifty quid like it. I wonder if you could formulate your own cream sourcing their ingredients list. There must be people doing it already.

24CRZZNKKA · 29/01/2025 14:50

Those links aren't for the yellow cream

strawberrycrumbles · 29/01/2025 14:55

supply and demand, she's not a business, you are ridiculous to be FUMING. Why do you think you are entitled to a cheaper pricer?

Blame the company for discontinuing the product, but there are other creams. It's not a necessity, it's a convenience.

Edited

What difference does it make if someone does it intentionally as a seller with bulk items or they do it as a one off? The outcome for the person trying to buy is the same, what you say don't make sense.

sonsmum · 29/01/2025 14:59

@Feelingcrappy2 I have 2 unopened tubes of this cream that I never actually needed to use on my child. You are welcome to have them for free.
The only thing i need to reveal is my child is now a teenager and the on the box, the expiray date says 2018!
However you're still welcome to have the tubes if you want (for free).
Perhaps just consult someone medical to determine if still appropriate to use. I can't truly believe there will be an issue with the product itself, except the active ingrediant being weaked. The seal is unopened.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 29/01/2025 14:59

So I looked at the ingredients and you could definitely get that formulated. Otherwise I would look for alternative nappy creams that contain titanium.

Because one is price gouging and one is not.

Would you sell your house today at the price you paid for it 5 or 10 years ago? Or would you sell it for what it's worth now?

MxFlibble · 29/01/2025 15:07

She is profiteering. Generally considered to be unreasonable.

Have you checked all the products you use for methylisothiazolinone (it's used as a preservative in loads of stuff)

My youngest, I once dangled him into a bath where I'd used bubble bath with it in (assuming it would be so dilute it didn't matter) and he yelled - when I pulled him back up, his legs were already red (no, it wasn't hot). One wipe, and his bottom would be sore and bleeding. My ex, a grown man, didn't have it so bad, but repeated exposure left his skin dry, sore, and scaly - for ages we thought it was a recurring fungal infection, then we figured this out and he was cured in days.

bugalugs45 · 29/01/2025 15:27

I have a tube in my bathroom cabinet , it's half used & in a out of date but still smells and looks fine. if anyone would like me to list on Vinted , happy to for £1 which is the minimum , I know fees and postage but can't override that unfortunately

PlasticineKing · 29/01/2025 15:44

@Feelingcrappy2 j have a half used one (even less) that I can post to you, pop me a message

Speedygonzales78 · 29/01/2025 16:02

You can report for price gouging

Time40 · 29/01/2025 16:05

All these people saying it's immoral and wrong to sell something for a price that someone will pay ... I can't see anything whatsoever wrong with it. Prices of items rise and fall all the time, sometimes with scarcity and sometimes just with fashion. If I had something that used to be of low value and was suddenly of high value, I'd sell it for best price I could get.

howrudeforme · 29/01/2025 16:14

There was alot if this during lockdown - toilet roll £5 each, inflated prices for hair/beard trimmers when everyone got desperate. The cost of masks as well. Not great but not unheard of.

MumblesParty · 29/01/2025 16:23

I think the population can be divided into halves.
Half would read this thread and think "fair enough, supply and demand, it's a dog-eat-dog world, you have to look after number 1 and get what you can".
The other half will think "I wonder if I've got any leftover metanium that I could send to poor OP".
I'm the latter but I suppose I'm not a natural-born capitalist!

Jellycats4life · 29/01/2025 16:25

That’s really low. I can’t imagine being so grasping. I wouldn’t line her pockets even if I was totally desperate.

Hi OP- I haven’t used this company personally just saw it on a quick google search- may be helpful to you

Newmumburnout · 29/01/2025 16:29

I am happy to think "dog eat dog world" but I would also hand mine out for free if I had any

RobinEllacotStrike · 29/01/2025 16:34

oh its still available online for a fiver!!

If I was using this for my baby I would be stocking up knowing it was discontinued.

But going by the OP's logic that would be really poor form as so many parents "genuinely see as a necessity for their babies wellbeing" so stockpiling for personal use is absolutely not allowed. 😐

Ticktockgoestheclockhere · 29/01/2025 16:42

in case you see this, I have sent you a link where you can buy one cheaply.

the audacity of that woman though! This cream was a lifesaver when my children, who also have sensitive skin, were babies.

I had this happen with my developer during covid on ebay. I was paying £12.99 for years and in covid they increased it to £109.99!

I reported it to ebay and they forced to seller to reduce it to about £25.99 I think.

Worth reporting to Vinted... otherwise you'll have to vote with your feet - but it is crazy pricing!
