To be pissed off at this lady on Vinted!?

As some of you may know, Metanium Nappy Rash Cream has sadly been discontinued. Apparently due to difficulties the company have in sourcing a certain ingredient, therefore making it hard for them to continue to produce it.

I know what MN can be like :) so before any one jumps in with 'well if you change your baby regularly enough, you won't need the cream' sort of bs, I change my baby very regularly but he has very sensitive and seemingly extra delicate, dry and eczema prone skin so every so often (and despite washing him after a poop instead of using wipes) he can get sore. Metanium worked wonders, it was my go-to and was highly recommended by doctors.

Any way, about a week ago (this has just been playing on my mind and I need to rant), I went on Vinted to see if anybody was selling any new tubes and there she was, a lady selling ONE TUBE (previously worth around £4) for £60. SIXTY POUNDS.

I get people cashing on in discontinued luxuries such as biscuits/chocolates or whatever. But seriously, I'm assuming this lady (judging by her other listings) is a mother of young children, who is cashing in on what some mothers genuinely see as a necessity for their babies wellbeing.

Any way, I messaged this lady asking how much (to see if she would miraculously say £4 or £5) but she replied '£50 is the lowest I can go'. I said how I felt about it and she replied words the effect that 'desperate mums will pay'.

We argued a bit and that was that.

But she is right, desperate mums probably would pay such price if their baby is bleeding from their genital area. It's fucking awful to be that greedy over a NAPPY RASH CREAM.

I'm still so fuming and needed to get it off my chest!!!

I can't get worked up about this.

She has a a very in demand product and can therefore charge what she likes. Nobody HAS to buy it. We live in a capitalist society and I can't be getting arsey over someone trying to pay the bills with bum cream.

Get arsey at Liz Truss and all the rest of the utter bellends who crashed the economy.

NiftyKoala · 24/01/2025 15:04

Some people live to take advantage of others in these circumstances. It's awful. Also op wanted to say don't let anyone tell you you are not changing your child enough. In my family we had a baby with the most God awful rash and his mother changed him immediately after going. He just had super sensitive skin. It was awful so I feel for you and your baby.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 24/01/2025 15:13

I know it seems horrible, but if you had something to sell and had 2 potential buyers - one willing to pay £50 and other willing to pay £6 who would you sell it to?

Presumably both have children with the same problem so either way 1 child is being denied it

Thank you @fghbvh, I do actually have that one and using it every change as a barrier in hope it helps to keep any redness at bay! £35 for a used one... honestly I'd be so embarrassed to do this!

I probably do just need to stop investing so much frustration into it but like I say, cashing in on discontinued items that aren't seen as a necessity I can understand and overlook, but other mothers cashing in on nappy rash cream is beyond me!

She saw a business opportunity and took it?

Name90210 · 24/01/2025 16:06

I actually have two unopened tubes! My daughter didn’t get on with it and we bought a bunch before she was born. Happy to sell at whatever price it’s going for in the shops/not make any profit on it. I can put it on Vinted for you? ❤️

YouOKHun · 24/01/2025 17:28

Not just babies. There is a young man who is recently disabled and those caring for him have found it is the only treatment that works for his pressure sores. It's been priced out of their range too. Ointment appeal for disabled teen on 'last tube' www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yv5495eexo

Precipice · 24/01/2025 13:41

This seems unlikely... she's got one tube of it. No different from her selling one of anything else for whatever price she wants.

OP, YABU for your messages trying to get a lower price.

I can confirm they do remove them, I've reported someone on vinted this afternoon and just got the message it was removed and the seller 'disciplined' (their own words) 😂

HÆLTHEPAIN · 24/01/2025 19:35

It’s disgusting that people are profiting so much. My poor nephew gets sore at times due to allergies. Luckily I found an unopened tube in my cupboard that I gave to my sister for him.

user2848502016 · 24/01/2025 19:38

That's terrible, have you reported her to vinted?

My DD used to get bad nappy rash too and had very sensitive skin. Weleda calendula nappy cream worked wonders for her, worth a try

In the incredibly unlikely event of the op not wanting them I'd happily buy them (or 1) from you. Probably best to just PayPal as I think they'd be snapped up in 0.001 seconds on Vinted or eBay.

We're nearly out of the yellow tube and have tried the waleda candedula that's always recommended, but I'm not a fan. It looks like sudocrem sell a nappy cream, so I'm thinking of trying that next. My dd is 1 so past the worst nappy rash phase thankfully. I refuse to pay £35 for a semi used tube on ebay!

Vinted are pretty hot on deletions. You should report it!

Report it for what? Being a price you don’t want to pay?!?!

2025willbemytime · 24/01/2025 20:17

Have you tried Boots zinc and castor oil nappy cream?

thejadefish · 24/01/2025 20:37

I got excited when I spotted a yellow box of metanium on the supermarket shelf last week & thought maybe they'd managed to bring it back, but on examining the box & ingredients closely its the barrier cream / same as the white and purple one just in a different package. If you see a yellow box, it isn't the yellow stuff!

I've been reccomended these as alternatives...

@Name90210 oh wow. Will message this morning. Thank you

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 25/01/2025 09:19

If you're prepared to spend ££ (but not that level of ££!), then the Neal's Yard stuff is excellent. I'm sure you also do this, but some bare bottom time can really help too.

Northernladdette · 29/01/2025 12:49

It’s immoral, I hope no one buys it 🙄

Sjh15 · 29/01/2025 12:49

Not the same, but my son has an attachment to a certain comforter
I looked on vinted a while back. I bought the original for £4 from primark.
£20 on vinted
£20.
she’s right, ‘desperate mums will pay’
aggghh

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 29/01/2025 13:09

Have you tried drapolene? It was the only thing that worked for us.

God forbid we just gift things like small essential items that we don’t need and would otherwise just chuck in the bin! I’ve just been going thru my cupboard thinking I’ve got some I could send her, but unfortunately not.

My daughter had terrible nappy rash. Nothing worked, except vaseline.

Digdongdoo · 29/01/2025 13:26

That's capitalism for you. It's a discontinued product - there will be none to buy at any price soon, better to stop looking for it and find an alternative.

ChunkyInBlakely · 29/01/2025 13:31

Sad thing is there’ll be someone out there desperate enough to pay it!
My eldest has a bowel condition so suffered terribly with nappy rash as a baby & his hospital recommend a 50/50 mix of orabase paste and Vaseline which worked wonders. Metanium was great, but my god did it stain stuff!!
