So you're dead

So you're sadly dead, you got hit by a bus, which was unfortunately on time for a fucking change, what song would you want at your funeral?

I think I'd want Little Wonders by Rob Thomas. I like to think I'd have something really funny and inappropriate but realistically some of my family would not find that funny.

A mixture of spiritual (traditional hymns) & contemplative music & possibly a song by Edith Piaf.

I've been to funerals where the choices were supposedly chosen to make people laugh. One was bordering on embarrassing as people watched relatively young children sobbing as the curtain closed. It just felt wrong & fwiw nobody laughed.

This.
I went to one where 'always look on the bright side of life' played at the end. But it was for an awful shocking suicide. I was the end of the queue leaving at it must have repeated 3 times before someone switched it off

I don't want 'songs'. I want beautiful music and hymns.
Nimrod by Elgar. Maybe ' I know that my redeemer liveth' from the messiah.

I want my niece’s beautiful soprano solo of Panis Angelicus with her school choir. We also played it at DM’s funeral.

In my life by the Beatles for my husband and children.
I absolutely love Psalm 23 so would like that to be read.
husband has suggested I have “you’re dead” theme from What We do in the Shadows. To be honest it would be my style

The one I suggested further up is actually based on Psalm 23. You may like it, well, that is if you like folk rock.

Phineyj · 22/01/2025 09:36

I think I'd have the Evening Prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. I could too! I sing in a couple of choruses and I'm sure everyone would show up if I perished tragically under a bus, especially given how people feel about TfL's lack of punctuality.

Everyone would cry buckets!

aphroditeflighty · 22/01/2025 09:38

Charlie Winston "Kick the Bucket"

This is not a sad song!
I don't bring it up to get you down.
It's a celebration of all the red cells
going round and round in your body!
I don't mean to preach or to sound like a
teacher. No! - I only wanna cut the crap
and, looking back, everybody's had to
face the facts

That we all kick the bucket in the end, the end
All the girls kick the bucket in the end, the end
And the boys kick the bucket in the end, my my my friend
Yep, we all kick the bucket in the end, the end
The end, the end
The end, the end
ah aha aha aha
ah aha aha aha aha aha aha aha

I'm an organist.
I want silence at mine.

diddl · 22/01/2025 09:42

Arrival of the Queen of Sheba as I'm well arriving.

Boogie with Stu-Led Zeppelin at the end.

RabbitsRock · 22/01/2025 09:42

Anything but My Way! I might have “Dancing Queen”, my favourite song, although sadly I haven’t danced for a while. Need to remedy that before I shuffle off this mortal coil!

Alifemoreordinary123 · 22/01/2025 09:42

@edwinbear i love your clarity and energy for this. Hope that is exactly what you get.

I have no idea what the answer to this is and now feel I need a funeral plan.

WimbyAce · 22/01/2025 09:44

I have 2, Never Forget by Take That and Don't Stop Me Now by Queen.

ThreeLeggedCat · 22/01/2025 09:45

I’m Still Standing

WestwardHo1 · 22/01/2025 09:46

I don't care. I won't be here. My family/friends can choose anything that gives them comfort.

TheOnlyMrsW · 22/01/2025 09:50

I haven't thought much about it but now feel like I should, some great songs on this thread! @MrsTerryPratchett that is both amazing and beautiful, I will definitely remember it 💕

Song? As in secular song? Why? What is wrong with church hymns, like for normal people, not film stars? Even if it was a LIVE Elton performance, it cheapened the funeral of Diana, there is no place for secular songs at a church. Apologies if I misunderstood and it won't be at a church.

Wow, how obnoxious and dismissive of others' customs. Who appointed you?

ChicLilacSeal · 22/01/2025 00:12

I don't want a funeral. Waste of money. My parents are gone and I'm single, so there's no point spending my niblings' inheritance and inconveniencing everyone to take time out to come. I think it's more important to spend time with people while they're still alive.

Same here. I have no close relatives except a sister who is likely to outlive me, and my friends mostly are farflung. Not going to inconvenience people with some pointless memorial.

CeeJay81 · 22/01/2025 09:57

I really could do with a funeral plan. There's a Japanese song(theme tune from a nhk documentary series) that I want it at the end of my funeral, as people are leaving. I love the tune! As 99.99% of people wouldn't have a clue, it'd be good to have it in a plan. Only dh knows this.

BettyBardMacDonald · 22/01/2025 09:59

If I were having a funeral, which I'm not, "Itchycoo Park" has always been appealed to me.

NeedANapAgain · 22/01/2025 10:02

The Pogues “Sally MacLennane”. Very appropriate chorus.

SeaBaseAlpha · 22/01/2025 10:05

Goin' Back - Dusty Springfield

The most amazing singer, written by the most amazing songwriter.

spacepies · 22/01/2025 10:05

Nelly the elephant.

Stinksmum · 22/01/2025 10:06

Full of Life by Christine and the Queens. The version with the "Fucks" in in. Tough luck if my inconsolable family and friends don't like swearing.

drspouse · 22/01/2025 10:08

Oh When The Saints - we walked in to this at our wedding. Played on piano and jazz saxophone.
I will make sure I die before most of my friends who can sing so they come and sing it loudly.

Peanutssuck · 22/01/2025 10:09

My Way - the Sex Pistols version not Franks

Pluvia · 22/01/2025 10:09

I've asked for direct cremation and then left money for a leisurely lunch for up to 30 people somewhere really nice at a decent time of year. Sick of having to go to terrible funerals conducted by people who clearly had no idea who the deceased was, on cold, sleety, dark winter days. I dread having to make even more appropriate smalltalk with people who barely knew the deceased but came for the buffet. So lunch for friends and a couple of carefully-chosen family members, if any of them are still around when the time comes.
