Has anyone else come off Twitter because of Musk?

I have refused to use it and closed it down as has my employer. Anyone else?

Yes I won't use it anymore

QuimCarrey · 09/01/2025 15:22

I have one just to read stuff, but I'm using it less because he's clearly fucking about with the algorithm. Made a blue-sky account too.

HowardTJMoon · 09/01/2025 15:24

I deleted my account last year. The prioritisation of posts from paid-for bluetick users was the turning point for me. Any even vaguely political post gets inundated with right wing shitposts from bluetick wankers. If I wanted to only read posts from conspiracy theorist Trump supporters I'd have joined Truth Social. That and the massive increase in spam and bots has made it truly awful.

There has been so much pompous performative posturing about leaving X in my industry that I kind of want to carry on with it to spite them all. I do miss some of the people who used to be fun - Bluesky is so unutterably, painfully tedious though.

luckylavender · 09/01/2025 15:29

Yes

BobnLen · 09/01/2025 15:32

There isn't really much alternative, I use it for contacting businesses and the only real alternative is Facebook which I definitely don't use, I'm not interested in following folks or tweeting for the sake of it

This.

Right wing shitposting is as legitimate as any other type of posting. But the algorithms are favouring it more than they used to. I don't want it to be the focus of my twitter.

I did notice that my several hundred porn bot followers have gone, however. I almost miss them.

Yes it's a cesspit and that was even before he started meddling in British affairs.

LadyWhitwell · 09/01/2025 15:39

I don't post on it. I have blue sky but still have twitter just for the news updates especially the wars in the middle east and Ukraine. I haven't found a good account on bluesky that posts frequent updates. So I'm sticking with twitter for now despite how much I loathe it.

lljkk · 09/01/2025 15:40

Haven't deleted but basically I just don't go on X.

For work we want to publicise the activities of a specific project, in the charity sector, not to do with identity wars or politics etc. News like "20 of us met in Cairo on 7 Jan 2025" type statements. I can't find another platform so good for that, although Facebook is seeming the closest.

Twitter was useful for getting attention of companies when they gave poor service, or asking a technical question to a real expert or a journalist (like "what kind of butterfly is this?" and "Where can I find out more about this consumer issue"?), or getting very breaking news from wide but legit sources.

I used to love my Twitter feed. It was highlight of my day to have a quick browse at lunchtimes. It was witty & funny & lovely & interesting & always made me happier. <sigh>

SleepDeprivedElf · 09/01/2025 15:41

Yes I think it's time to be voting with my eyeballs. I'll leave Facebook soon too.

Cloacina · 09/01/2025 15:41

I still have it but rarely go on it now. Bluesky instead. However I am worried that Zuckerberg now seems to be getting into bed with Trump after his announcement this week about ditching independent fact checkers. I use FB and insta for my work advertising a lot and if that's going to start get more right wing then I don't want to use it but don't really have an alternative.

Maddy70 · 09/01/2025 15:43

I deleted twitter when it started to make me feel like I needed a shower after looking at it. I'm on Bluesky now, and like the general vibe, but I agree - it's not as good for following rapidly breaking and current news as twitter was.

I also miss the humour from the early days on twitter. There were some genuinely quick and funny people on there.

Tisfortired · 09/01/2025 15:47

I came off it around about when it became X, not explicitly because of Musk but because it was just a cesspit. The algorithm for some reason also only showed me the most depressing stuff, I’d come off it feeling really down. Deleted the app and haven’t missed it at all.

Cloacina · 09/01/2025 15:51

I'm also surprised at how slow a lot of the major uk news outlets are to embrace Bluesky. The Guardian is all over it but the BBC is pretty absent. Is The Times on there? Haven't found it.

Iloveyoubut · 09/01/2025 15:57

The main reason I don’t really use it anymore is because too many people were buying blue ticks which allowed them to make revenue from posts and people replying to posts. This resulted in extreme amounts of engagement farming and it’s just unusable now. I didn’t lose interest because of Musk - if I was to boycott everything because I disliked the people behind it life would be unworkable but I do think X is no longer useful.

Lemon85 · 09/01/2025 16:18

Absolutely - the only way to make a difference is when we do things in numbers. If enough people do it, things will change. I've moved to BlueSky and I couldn't be happier with that choice.

Numberwangggg · 09/01/2025 16:19

Yes.

sonjadog · 09/01/2025 16:22

I haven't deleted my account but I haven't been there for months. My network there disappeared and there isn't any reason for me to go there now.

chickensandbees · 09/01/2025 16:23

MrsKwazi · 09/01/2025 13:43

I deactivated my acc after the us election

I did exactly the same. I don't imagine he's bothered, but I feel better for not being on there.

Echobelly · 09/01/2025 16:24

Came off in July 2023. Nothing had particularly changed in my feed since Musk took over other than annoying ads in replies but I hadn't noticed fan increase in right wing troll types. But Musk's antics and shitty treatment of both staff and twitter users was awful and it was becoming more and more clear what a vile human being he was. And he's only got worse since.

It wasn't hard tbh, I'd been on twitter over 10 years and barely ever got any interaction so it wasn't a wrench, though I found it useful for interesting articles and opinion. Ironically given what's happened since I would credit Twitter with really helping me understand privilege, black rights, LGBTQ+ rights etc much better than I did.

I went over to threads which I have been enjoying, for its faults. Sadly Musk's worldview has infected Meta now, as I always suspected it would, so to Bluesky for me now!

Bringbackspring · 09/01/2025 16:25

I deleted my account not long after Musk bought it because my feed went down hill really quickly, and engagement dropped right off. I wanted to get out before it became the full on cess pit it is now. My workplace still have accounts, and I occasionally have to use the work accounts. Everyone who follows us now is a random scantily clad lady!
A professional organisation I'm a member of is actively looking for a new social media platform so they can transition across. Possibly to Blue Sky

wholettheturnipsburn · 09/01/2025 16:27

I came off last year as it had become an utter joke

Hundreds of bot replies that had nothing to do with the post

Russian troll and bot farms

Promotion of vile views

It's not "free speech" now it's basically anyone can say anything and the posts were vile and upsetting

I really miss the Twitter of old

SirChenjins · 09/01/2025 16:29

Yep - both personal and work accounts have been closed. It’s a cesspit where the worst of humanity go to spout their bile.
