Picky bits?

I hate this! I saw it on a M&S advert and it gave me the willies. I don't know why it sounds gross but it puts me off food as does 'dirty' fries. Yeuch!

I'm 34 and we've always had picky teas. My nan used to do a spectacular one including glazed cherries with a pot of cocktail sticks to stab them!

I am ok with Picky bits /tea... UNLESS it's one of those bloody charcuterie boards where it has literally been man handled for hours to roll it into sodding flowers as well as being picked all over at the buffet. Urgh.

A fiddled-with feast.

Call it what you want at your house but a buffet is not just for guests or weddings. Fact.

If it was just you and your husband/whoever you live with and it was buffet time, would you call and say "everyone! Come down now please! Buffet on the sideboard!". Or what? How does it work?

I don't love picky bits as a saying but "gives me the willies" has absolutely cracked me up. I've not heard that in ages. It should be used more so well done @HelenInHeels

I’d say food is ready! But over Christmas if I was using all the leftover meats and cheeses I’d say we were having a buffet of leftovers.

It's a shame people don't understand when someone is being deliberately goady to get people going (see the last few posts).

The reason I object to "picky tea" and "picky bits" is because instead of associating the word "picky" with picnic, I automatically think of picking fleas out of fur or picking at skin/scabs. Tea is a drink for me, not a meal - that's regional and I'm not a snob. Bits is like crumbs on a carpet or parts of the body that you should definitely wash every day.

I really don’t understand the mentality on here. Different people call things by different names, shocker. I call my last meal of the day dinner but I understand some people call it Tea or Supper, it’s no skin off my nose what anyone else calls it and I certainly don’t judge them for it.

What I don’t understand is why is it the middle class Henrietta from Surrey is correct and the working class Tracey from up north incorrect? Hmmm? Who made those rules?

I'd never heard of picky bits, a spread or a grazing table until I read about them on Mumsnet. I wonder if it's regional? I live in the Midlands. We call it a buffet here.

I think a buffet is different as it's usually (in my book, which is never wrong) made up of complete dishes that people help themselves from along with other bits and bobs to go with it. Less formal. It's the help yourself bit and the guests/event that's relevant really. Perhaps a hostess trolley may or may not be involved

Picky bits (I understand as I have no experience of actually picking a bit) is just left overs and other shit and bits and bobs. Not a proper coherent meal. The implication being that you all sit round a table like birds pecking away at some.random breadcrumbs and a bit of bacon fat on the bird table. Or like monkeys picking for fleas and eating them. M&S style.

But they’re not just any fleas. They’re M&S fleas.

I associate picky bits with people who have invited guests for dinner but are really resentful when they arrive and present them with random bits of food they will hate instead of just getting a pizza for some reason

Like if someone offered me a picky tea I would assume they hated me
