Picky bits?

I hate this! I saw it on a M&S advert and it gave me the willies. I don't know why it sounds gross but it puts me off food as does 'dirty' fries. Yeuch!

OP posts:

It's not revolting or intolerable ffs. Some people on here need to get a bloody life.

stargirl1701 · 03/01/2025 17:56

We call it a picnic dinner.

bakewellbride · 03/01/2025 17:56

To me 'gave me the willies' is far worse op, each time their own!

Himawarigirl · 03/01/2025 17:57

@bakewellbride same, I hate that expression!

maddiemookins16mum · 03/01/2025 17:57

We call it a Snack Supper.

I apologise.

People are easily upset arent they!

Im quite pleased Im going about my day shocking people to the core.

Oh by the way, is there any more pork pie?

Humphhhh · 03/01/2025 17:58

Love a picky bits meal. And my DS will eat just about anything if it's under the umbrella of picky bits.

Hope that makes people's teeth itch.

BreakHerOffAKitKat · 03/01/2025 17:47

We used to call it a choosey tea growing up - because you get to choose what you want from all the picky bits laid out

Presumably that's why it's called 'picky bits', because you get to pick(choose) what you want.

Cattery · 03/01/2025 18:01

Party food surely, although I don’t mind it called picky bits

Betchyaby · 03/01/2025 18:01

@Wrongsideofpennines Yes 'picking' from a selection of different food.

Jifmicroliquid · 03/01/2025 18:03

The Ocado radio advert last year with that man saying ‘picky bits’ gave me the rage.
We call it a buffet.

IncessantNameChanger · 03/01/2025 18:03

As a dyslexic I find these topics hilarious. I can't get caught up on words as I'm barely literate. I'd love to get the rage on the nuances of of the English language.

If I understand what it means, that's good enough for me.

Timble · 03/01/2025 18:03

It’s bits and bobs for us! No idea if it’s weird or not but I definitely prefer it to picky bits!!

Likewhatever · 03/01/2025 18:03

It’s very twee. Relatively new I would say, have only heard it in the last ten years. The equivalent from days of yore is “cold cuts”.

Thewhisperingwindsofwinter · 03/01/2025 18:04

@ShineyMoonChild both mean the same thing. It's literally using two words with the same meaning.

Although buffet in my opinion is better because its the original meaning. Buffet is the name for a sort of sideboard where food would get placed.

ExtraDisorganised · 03/01/2025 18:04

ShineyMoonChild · 03/01/2025 17:50

How is picky bits not a buffet? Surely you wouldn't plate up picky bits in the kitchen and bring it out like that.

Well yes, we don't call it that but it is what we often do for weekend lunch, everyone gets out what they want from the fridge whether that is cold meat, cheese, pickles, salad, whatever, puts it on a plate with bread or crackers and takes it to the table to eat. Sometimes together more often not as we all tend to be in and out at different times.

I'm going to have a picky tea tonight. Picky, picky picky!

mitogoshigg · 03/01/2025 18:05

I didn't hear the term picky bits until recently, I call it either snacks tea or frozen crap if it's those frozen things you bake and put out at Christmas

SuffolkBargeWoman · 03/01/2025 18:05

StockbridgeovertheRiverKwai · 03/01/2025 17:49

Class signifier perhaps?

Yep

Hawkerslife · 03/01/2025 18:06

We used to call it an 'everything tea' growing up and I still say it now to my children.

Rosesgrowonyou · 03/01/2025 18:06

SuffolkBargeWoman · 03/01/2025 18:05

Yep

I know this is MN but you don't have to turn every thread into a class war.

StormingNorman · 03/01/2025 18:07

SuffolkBargeWoman · 03/01/2025 18:05

Yep

But what class does it signify? I’ve only heard it on MN so I have no idea which class would say it.

NOTANUM · 03/01/2025 18:08

Hate the term and the concept. It’s basically just unloading the fridge of leftovers and opened stuff, and plonking them on the table for you to do the hard work.
Cheese, hummus, bread, celery? No thank you.

fivebyfivebuffy · 03/01/2025 18:08

We call it scraps

After a teacher asked what we had over Christmas, I couldn't remember the name for buffet and said confidently "scraps. And my dad spent all of Christmas in the pub"

Dad had to explain it was M&S buffet food and yes he was in the pub because we lived there and he was.. running it

Presumably not MN's original membership! (What's the difference between Mums Net and Net Mums? A postgraduate qualification and £30k a year)
