Picky bits?

I hate this! I saw it on a M&S advert and it gave me the willies. I don't know why it sounds gross but it puts me off food as does 'dirty' fries. Yeuch!

It sounds awful

HÆLTHEPAIN · 03/01/2025 22:44

It’s picky tea here. And it’s definitely not beige or leftovers. Ours usually consists of patès, cheeses, olives, meats, smoked salmon and/or trout, salad, grapes, bread and crackers from M&S. All fresh and intentionally bought for the purpose.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/01/2025 22:53

I understand the phrase but I don't like it either, and wouldn't use it. I do have days where I can just not be bothered, and so I put together a mix from salad, veg, pulses, grains or bread, nuts, bottled veg , hummus, eggs or cheese. And possibly cake, being truthful!

Rock n roll, no?

Rock n roll, no?

Mac n Cheese. But that needs a thread of its own.

It sounds awful

It's neither sounds or is awful.

fluffyblanky · 03/01/2025 23:09

The kids call it a picnic tea

My boyfriend calls it Nacky bits

I just say 'I will make a few bits, cheese, crisps and whatever else I have'

It sounds awful

Agree. Like picking at scabs.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/01/2025 23:22

Absolutely gross and hideous!

Comportment · 03/01/2025 23:23

It's uncouth. No MNer with any class would use it.

Vitriolinsanity · 03/01/2025 23:23

We call it a spread.

It is only served on Christmas night and informal parties.

My in-laws call it iffits - if it's there they'll have it, if it's not they won't.

I don't know what I call it, I don't enjoy buffet style eating. Maybe small buffet? I really don't know!

Objectrelations · 03/01/2025 23:37

It's just a buffet

BettyBardMacDonald · 03/01/2025 23:39

litepop · 03/01/2025 20:04

It's up there with people being 'peckish'

Oh god, my toes just curled at that one! And not in a good way!

MaggieBsBoat · 03/01/2025 23:40

As above I think it’s a class signifier or regional. I’ve only ever heard of it on MN. I hate it.

We sometimes used to have an indoor picnic.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 03/01/2025 23:42

My mum usually describes cooking smells as 'toothsome' which I find repulsive. I think of teeth floating in the pan.

IHeartKingThistle · 03/01/2025 23:47

Bits and bobs here too!

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/01/2025 23:53

whiteswan87 · 03/01/2025 17:38

Yes it makes my teeth itch! Hate the phrase!

I can't stand "makes my teeth itch" so there you go

BBQPete · 04/01/2025 00:05

Picky bits is a great term.
For me, it isn't when you put out a buffet for a party or when guests first come over, it is when you put a load of 'leftovers' out for the family to "pick at".
Commonly a meal at the time after Christmas, or indeed after any other party when you have lots of "bits" of left over food that need eating up.

Enko · 04/01/2025 00:08

I also dislike the terms. Whenever I have asked for advice on starters here I've had this suggested to the point I started saying not lots of separate dishes as I dislike that.

I am also. Not a great fan of canopees

"Pick at". I just have that lovely Life on Earth film in my head now. The one where David Attenborough gets de-fleaed by some gorillas.

CeceliaImrie · 04/01/2025 00:23

I hate the term picky bits because it displeases my ears for reasons unknown.

I call it a bits from the fridge supper or picnic tea.

NewYearSameOldSameOld · 04/01/2025 00:26

Love me some picky bits. Who knew I’m a bit council and common? Well, I’ll wear the badge with pride.

itsalwaysthesame · 04/01/2025 00:41

Dislike it too, but also dislike the word nibbles, only because it reminds me of my hamster.

Picnic or dinner are ok, and the new phase "grazing table" also vile and they look awful, also the word "lunch" really annoys me, so does pack up's for a packed lunch, in fact packed lunch irritates me as well, also meal.

But I do love food so however it's referred to I will always eat it Smile
