Can you ski and / or sail? (Not at all inspired by another thread)

Just that really.

I learnt to sail when I was young. On dinghies. I've done a bit since and am a member of a sailing club. I'm ok at it - although I prefer light winds.

I can ski a bit - had a few skiiing holidays, but haven't done it with DS as it's expensive during school holidays. Different now as he's not at school anymore so we are going soon.

I like sailing - it's relaxing. I'm not really into racing - but that's what sailing clubs like to do. I just like being on the water.

Yes both, but didn’t ski until university so am still nervous although technically competent.
DH good at both. DC sail well but haven’t skiied much.

MrsPerfect12 · 01/01/2025 12:36

I can ski but have never tried Sailing.

Snowmanscarf · 01/01/2025 12:37

Never skied, but have done sailing, but i’m a fair weather sailor.

MopTopInAHop · 01/01/2025 12:38

No to both. Also not posh.

This.

Not too windy. Just enough to make progress

Yes to skiing, no to sailing.

YellowPixie · 01/01/2025 12:39

I used to be able to do both, taught on a dry ski slope when I was about 12 and was pretty competent but haven't done it in 30 odd years. Same as sailing, we had an outdoor education section at school and we were taught to sail wee topper dinghys but on lochs not the open sea.

Didn't keep up either hobby though as they didn't appeal to me.

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 01/01/2025 12:39

I can not ski. I can't really sail but we live on the coast and DH is a sailor and everyone around us as well.

I can ride horses. But i was brought up on a working farm.

Appleblum · 01/01/2025 12:39

Yes to both. I really loved sailing when I was younger but these days I worry too much about sun damage. DDs love skiing but I haven't brought them sailing yet.

YellowPixie · 01/01/2025 12:40

Also to add - I was given the opportunity to learn skiing and sailing at a bog-standard Edinburgh comprehensive school in the 80s.

Stickortwigs · 01/01/2025 12:40

On paper - I have my day skipper cert and going skiing every year but in reality I’m not a practical person and I’m crap at both.

Horses...

Another one I could have mentioned.

I've ridden horses. Quite liked it - it was done when travelling so quite a cool experience horse riding in the outback

I ski (lots), but have always gotten very sick on water so sailing is not for me. Found it quite miserable every time I went as a child or teen (which was surprisingly often given how much I hated it!)

DancingFerret · 01/01/2025 12:41

Yes, both. Our sailing club does a lot more besides racing - teaching youngsters (and adults), social events and rallies. We're lucky in that we're based on the south coast within easy reach of the Isle of Wight marinas as well as those on the mainland.

Not quite the same as Yorkshire.
The North Sea is a bit different to South Coast!!

Sail and ride. Never been interested in skiing

TeenToTwenties · 01/01/2025 12:43

Never fancied skiing.
Spent much of my childhood folliwing Dad at sailing clubs but never much interested myself.
Could probably manage something robust like a mirror in light winds if I really really had to and had space to remember what to do.

Chemenger · 01/01/2025 12:45

I can ski (very badly) but not sail, although I’ve enjoyed it when I’ve done it. DCs can do both fairly competently. They had sailing lessons every summer and one of them had a friend at university with a house in a Swiss ski resort so went there a few times.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 01/01/2025 12:45

Yes to skiing. I've been skiing since I was a child so pretty comfortable on a pair of skis.

Sort of to sailing. DH and the kids can sail. I did a sailing course in Spain a couple of years ago so could get by if I had to.

muddyford · 01/01/2025 12:47

I can sail but not ski. I learned when I was 13 and did it competitively until I was 30. I still dream of it occasionally. I can also row and I am a qualified powerboat helmsman. I love mucking about in boats (even on the Norfolk Broads, which as the immortal Michael Green says, is hosting around in muck!).

Longma · 01/01/2025 12:48

First ski lesson tomorrow.
Never even put a pair of ski boots in until yesterday when we got, fitted for our rental.

I'm early 50s, have arthritis and had shoulder surgery 6 months ago. My consultant reckons I'll be fine.

I'm slightly terrified, whilst a little bit excited.

Never sailed and have no desire too.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 01/01/2025 12:48

Yes to both, not great, but OK.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2025 12:49

I have tried skiing, sailing and horse riding and hated all three, just not my thing, so no I can't do any of them. At least I can say I've tried, I suppose.

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 01/01/2025 12:50

Yes to both - I learnt at school

MidnightPatrol · 01/01/2025 12:50

Yes - and I’ll teach my own DC both when old enough!

Obviously don’t get to do any with some regularity, both fun activities however. Good fun for family holidays, keeping everyone busy and active!
