Can you ski and / or sail? (Not at all inspired by another thread)

Just that really.

I learnt to sail when I was young. On dinghies. I've done a bit since and am a member of a sailing club. I'm ok at it - although I prefer light winds.

I can ski a bit - had a few skiiing holidays, but haven't done it with DS as it's expensive during school holidays. Different now as he's not at school anymore so we are going soon.

I like sailing - it's relaxing. I'm not really into racing - but that's what sailing clubs like to do. I just like being on the water.

Can you ski and / or sail?

Neither, and no desire to.

Lesina · 01/01/2025 14:59

Yes to skiing and horse riding, have my own horse and ski regularly. Have just started to learn to scuba dive as well :) grew up on a council estate & definitely not posh :)

Justsaywhatyoumean123 · 01/01/2025 15:02

ski yes, horse ride yes, (since early childhood), sail no. I was also raised on a council estate.

TeenLifeMum · 01/01/2025 15:04

Tried sailing as I love the sea and the idea of it but get very sea sick so never took it further. I have skied but years ago - my school offered it as a pe option from year 10 as we linked with the local sports centre (state school).

I did horse riding as an adult - dh bought me lessons for a birthday in my late 20s as I really wanted to learn.

Natsku · 01/01/2025 15:05

Hunting, shooting and fishing aren't posh activities where I live, hunting and fishing are done for food (I can fish but I've never hunted, my uncles hunt though) and shooting is across all social strata but done at shooting clubs, unless you're a criminal in which case I guess its done wherever...

I can't ride horses, though my MIL has several (owns a riding stable)

merryhouse · 01/01/2025 15:07

No, never attempted either.

I've been on a horse once, I think - a short led ride at the Abbey Park Fair when I was little. My only memory of it is looking at the back of the Absolutely Enormous animal in front of us (I suspect they were quite small in reality).

I'm 55. Upbringing LMC.

LifeExperience · 01/01/2025 15:08

I used to be able to do both, although mobility issues have stopped me now that I'm older.

I grew up on the southern US coast and my family had a boat. Later dh and I crewed in yacht races. Great fun!

I first skied in the Lake Tahoe area, California as an young adult, and later we took the children skiing in North Carolina and Deer Valley, Utah. Our son is an accomplished downhill skier and our daughter loves cross country.

Flippinec · 01/01/2025 15:08

I can ski pretty well

Hate boats they make me sick so sailing a big no for me

Saschka · 01/01/2025 15:09

Ski/snowboard/ice skate - yes, but DBro was a snowboard instructor and I used to live in Canada. I can also scuba dive.

Sailing/windsurfing - I have tried it but never really got the hang of sailing against the direction of wind travel. So I can sail out to sea but not back again 🤣

LifeExperience · 01/01/2025 15:09

I never liked horse riding, but my daughter took lessons throughout childhood and loves to ride.

Xenia · 01/01/2025 15:11

Yes, but not very well. I went skiing once as a child, then we took our children aged 5, 7 and 9 and for quite a few years after that and then the younger children and although I have not been since the pandemic I do like it (but have never been particularly good. As to sailing, we did quite a few sailing holidays with the older children some partly on land and one flotilla holiday after a sailing course. I didn't really like all the constant having to pull ropes etc However it did mean the children have done it and indeed one did loads of sailing (and skiing - ski season and all sorts).

I think if you can afford it it is a good idea to introduce children of all kinds of things so they can pick that which they love.

I am from NE England and we spent a lot of time in Northumberland - in the countryside things like riding, shooting, hunting (now without dogs due to the ban in England) are normal things to do. I didn't ride until I was an adult and two of the children really liked it - we ended up with 2 horses. We don't have any now although one of my adult children does.

Jaapssthia · 01/01/2025 15:13

I’ve never skied but I have sailed. I’ve never dinghy sailed, I learned on a 32 feet yacht. I’ve done a two week sailing course on 40 feet yachts in Gibraltar and I’ve done Day Skipper. We had a yacht in the U.K. and we have chartered in Turkey.

SummerFeverVenice · 01/01/2025 15:13

I hate skiing, went once and then refused.
I love sailing and sea kayaking.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 01/01/2025 15:14

I learnt to ski as a teenager (went with school) but haven’t done it since as I hate the cold.

I can’t sail or ride a horse. Learnt to skate as a child as we lived near an ice rink, and started having lessons again with DD last year.

I grew up on a council estate. We’re comfortably off now but I’ve never thought DD was missing out by not doing very expensive sports, so she can’t ski, sail or ride either. She plays three instruments so that’s quite enough money on hobbies!

Jaapssthia · 01/01/2025 15:14

I’ve ridden horses most of my life, too old now.

thing47 · 01/01/2025 15:14

I was brought up on boats and am a good sailor. DH gets seasick! But to be fair to him has always encouraged me to keep it up and has given me some wonderful trips as presents over the years.

Never tried skiing as a) I hate being cold, b) I dont like heights and c) I see so many skiing injuries professionally that it has always put me off. Doubt I will ever try it now.

MinnieCauldwell · 01/01/2025 15:16

Can ride a horse, but too old now
Still sailing and run a club for people with special needs/requirements

crackofdoom · 01/01/2025 15:18

Appleblum · 01/01/2025 12:39

Yes to both. I really loved sailing when I was younger but these days I worry too much about sun damage. DDs love skiing but I haven't brought them sailing yet.

Minimal danger of sun damage if you sail off the British coast 😆🌧🌧🌬🌧🌪🌦

I sail (well used to anyway, and I still know how). As a poor person, I achieved this by buying a sailing boat to live on.

Oh, I did get taken skiing once when living in Italy. I was not, let us say, an instant success. My friend spent so much time trying to patiently teach me the basics on the nursery slope that the ski lift closed and the only way to get back down the mountain was down the actual grown up ski slope. Roughly 75% of which I covered on my arse 😆

itsgettingweird · 01/01/2025 15:21

I can do both. (Well sail and snowboard!)

But I did summer and winter seasons with sunsail and first choice ski in my youth!!!

My dad can sail extremely well and ski amazingly and I think although I had some exposure as a kid o just really wanted to give it a whirl while I could combined with travel.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/01/2025 15:21

I can ski reasonably well - fell in love after going on a school trip and went as often as I could once I started working. We started taking the kids as soon as they were old enough and luckily they love it too. We’ve had more skiing holidays than warm holidays.

DH and the kids can all sail, thanks to Scouting. I’ve never really tried.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/01/2025 15:32

No and no. Have no interest in doing either of them.

ETA I also have no desire to get on a horse ever.

dynamiccactus · 01/01/2025 15:36

MopTopInAHop · 01/01/2025 12:38

No to both. Also not posh.

I've done neither. Probably not posh enough either.

Disclaimer: I did once try cross-country ski-ing. Not sure if that is considered posh.

JarvisIsland · 01/01/2025 15:36

Ski/Snowbord/Ice Skate - yes. Though snowboarding is the worst of the 3 which limits me to blue runs, skiing happy on anything with a piste marker in most conditions but learned as an adult so not as fluid/effortless as those who learned as kids.

Never tried sailing as I don’t like being wet/the sea/beaches etc. so it’s never appealed.

I had riding lessons as a kid but not done it since so would say no for horse riding. DP can ski and sail but not really ice skate (can get round the rink without holding the sides, but can’t reliably stop!) or ride a horse.

CMOTDibbler · 01/01/2025 15:38

No. No interest in either.

123dogdog · 01/01/2025 15:40

I can ski. I don’t mind it, but I’m stupidly cautious and I hate apres ski.

i had a sailing lesson on a uk holiday as a child, and I absolutely HATE boats. Not worried about drowning or falling in the water, I don’t even get sea sick, I just hate the lack of control. Same reason I hate waterslides, I do LOVE rollercoasters though 🤣

on the horse thing, I also really don’t like horses, they totally creep me out. I know they are beautiful and lovely but they creep me the fuck out 🤣
