Can you ski and / or sail? (Not at all inspired by another thread)

Just that really.

I learnt to sail when I was young. On dinghies. I've done a bit since and am a member of a sailing club. I'm ok at it - although I prefer light winds.

I can ski a bit - had a few skiiing holidays, but haven't done it with DS as it's expensive during school holidays. Different now as he's not at school anymore so we are going soon.

I like sailing - it's relaxing. I'm not really into racing - but that's what sailing clubs like to do. I just like being on the water.

Can you ski and / or sail?

Both. Skiing is more affordable if you have your own boots and skis.
I’m a fair weather sailor but could cope in a yacht in a storm if I had to (or could when I was younger). Back then, boats with motors were considered vulgar but I’d be happy on a gin palace these days.
:-)

Idkwtdwms · 01/01/2025 13:29

Yes but only learned both cheaply as an adult. Four days of sailing lessons in the UK then joined a local sailing club where I volunteered on the safety boat and membership fees were minimal. Two mornings of private skiing lessons in Slovakia, then ski holidays in Bosnia and Andorra. I much prefer skiing but that's because I'm not a team player!

Hoppinggreen · 01/01/2025 13:31

While I CAN ski in that I know how to I probably physically can't due to a couple of health/pain issues.
And I CAN sail to a certain extent as DH used to have a boat I always hated it so would never do it through choice

mitogoshigg · 01/01/2025 13:34

Yes sail fairly well, would love own yacht (too £££) but live by marina and scrounge trips crewing. My downhill skiing skills are basic due to being scared of falling but I did cross country ski and snowshoe a fair bit living in USA.

Pedallleur · 01/01/2025 13:34

Tried skiing. Realised you have to do it regularly to get good at it. My instructors were superb, just so elegant. Sailing no. I'd like to but these are/were not really affordable hobbies for me. Snow showing would be ideal for me. Tried that and walking in snow is better than falling down a slope at 20 plus mph plus carrying skis, wearing those boots etc

Heatherbell1978 · 01/01/2025 13:39

Can ski. Very well in fact, but haven't since DS was born 10 years ago. Used to go every year with a big group of girls and we had a blast. Then kids came along and prices sky rocketed. We used to stay in a catered chalet and it would cost around £600 each including flights. A ski pass was around £150. And a pint was cheaper than back home.

crosstalk · 01/01/2025 13:43

Used to ski, sail and ride. Not enough to be good at any of them and now too expensive. Give me a pair of rowlocks, though ..... and a river at the end of my garden .....

mitogoshigg · 01/01/2025 13:44

I can ride horses but haven't ridden for a few years, I can ice skate (well could, learned as a teen properly but haven't been since dc were teens themselves), dh rides motorcycles and I ride pillion.

People here are mentioning expensive hobbies but they really vary a lot eg we can store sailing dinghies for free in the town boat park and no launch fees either, so apart from buying one (you can pick one up for less than a modern smart phone) it is not costing you more than maintaining it. Elsewhere it would be a far more expensive proposition. If you live near a ski resort as dd does, it's affordable to go for the afternoon, think similar to a cheaper show or football match assuming you have gear. Having a horse if you own the land and have other animals isn't as crazy expensive either. Dh's toys (motorcycles) aren't too bad as he mostly maintains them and only one is on the road currently, saves us money on ferries and parking too

SeaToSki · 01/01/2025 13:48

Well you might be able to tell from my user name that yes I can and do both 😁

Its easier where I live though which is coastal New England in the US. About to head out and ski shortly today ⛷️

All the dc have learned and are excellent skiers, but they are fair weather sailors and dont like racing.

AmberOrca · 01/01/2025 13:48

I can sail but not ski.
I can also ride a horse.
I am not posh by any means but I live by a reservoir and lots of people hung out at the sailing club, I didn’t like sitting in the bar so I went out on the lake. I learned horse riding at school, I went weekly with the SEN class to help my social skills.

SnoopySantaPaws · 01/01/2025 13:48

I could ski, sail & ride. All very competently, until age, accident & health issues all compounded to make them no longer possible 😭😭😭Do what you can, while you can!!

Hotafternoon · 01/01/2025 13:48

Never been skiing but did a sailing course with the school at Calshot when a teenager. It was great but never sailed since.

Did horse riding also for quite a while but not ridden for decades.

HellofromJohnCraven · 01/01/2025 14:03

Neither.
Can't swim out of my depth either.
Had a happy and productive life nonetheless.

IsadoraQuagmire · 01/01/2025 14:04

Blakehouse · 01/01/2025 12:43

Sail and ride. Never been interested in skiing

Me too. I hate snow for a start!

MrsAvocet · 01/01/2025 14:04

I can sail, and we own a boat. We're not ocean crossers though, more coastal potterers. In fact we've moved to a lake in recent years as I've had health problems though we are contemplating putting the boat back on the sea as things improve. We've got a dinghy too but I'm not fit enough to sail that these days. Now the kids are grown up and have moved away we should probably sell it to be honest, but it was a lot of fun when they were younger.
I learned as an adult. I'm not from a stereotypical sailing background. It always interested me though, ever since I read Swallows and Amazons as a small child but was way out of reach. DH could already sail when I met him and we bought our first boat, a terribly neglected little 17ft trailer sailer, just after we got married and have sailed ever since. We have had our current boat for longer than we've had any of our children and she is indeed the One True Love of both me and DH! 😂 She's old fashioned now, but she is beautiful yet bomb proof and we know all her idiosyncrasies. I wouldn't swap her for a modern yacht, though I confess I do get a little bit envious when I see the space and comfort that a similar length boat of today offers!
I've never skied. It doesn't really appeal. I'm a bit accident prone so it's probably not the best idea. Besides which we have enough expensive hobbies in the family as it is and definitely couldn't afford another.

TangerineClementine · 01/01/2025 14:05

I can ski pretty well, I've sailed occasionally but I'm not very good at it.

Ballygowenwater · 01/01/2025 14:07

I can sail, dinghies and yachts, coastal and offshore. Can’t ski or ride a horse though

AlannaOfTrebond · 01/01/2025 14:20

I can ski and snowboard very badly after a couple of ski trips as a teenager, but I'm really not a fan of cold or mountains so never do it anymore.

I did dinghy sailing as a kid on holiday then didn't sail again until I was in my 20's. I then worked as crew for nearly a decade so am competent on pretty much any kind of boat. Working on boats is a good way to play with things you could never afford yourself!

Natsku · 01/01/2025 14:25

I've tried downhill skiing but wasn't keen on it, I preferred snowboarding but I've only done it a few times, not enough to say I can do it. I can cross country ski.

Can't sail but always wanted to, ever since I read Arthur Ransome books as a child

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/01/2025 14:28

I have tried skiing. Hated it.
I have been sailing in dinghies.
I dont like horses.
I can't ice skate, despite growing up in a city that had am ice rink .

I can row a boat.

FestiveDiscoBall · 01/01/2025 14:33

Can ski, skate and ride well.

Can ‘sail’ but realistically only under instruction and only really enjoy it on great conditions and for the social side.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/01/2025 14:34

I've never tried to ski or sail, but did learn to water ski in my youth.

Echobelly · 01/01/2025 14:39

Neither - DH loves skiing and I feel bad he hasn't done much in the last 2 decades. I gave it a go twice (indoors, on snow slopes) for him but I have a hip defect and both times I found it very uncomfortable and the last time, 3 years ago, I had a very locked sensation in my left knee, as though something in it was easily going to 'snap' if I fell, pushed it too far forward, or hit a bump so I told him I just couldn't risk it. He has taken the kids a couple of times, though.

PrincessofWells · 01/01/2025 14:41

Yes, learned to ski at 30 and sailing at 40! Bought a 40ft yacht at 50 and had an amazing 10 years with her 😍

StormingNorman · 01/01/2025 14:55

Yes to skiing, sailing (have a small racing yacht) and riding.

No to hunting, shooting and fishing so definitely not posh.
