...have I heard the terms "norks", "tinkly laugh", "naice" bread/ham/area, CF (Cheeky Fucker), LTB (Leave the Bastard) and "get your ducks in a row" (when leaving the bastard!)

What are your 'Only on MN' things?

You have been lucky then.
I was once on a flight from Hong Kong back to the UK. The man sat next to me was a large Dutch man who sat with his legs splayed for the entire flight. I spent the whole flight balancing on my left buttock.

He got off at Amsterdam so the last hour back to Manchester was more comfortable.

Didn’t you say anything? I’m sure I would have - the inconsiderate git!

When somebody asks for a recommendation for a work outfit and the suggestions are stuff like Hobbs that cost £100

I don't know anyone who buys that type of clothes - must be common as muck me 🤣

sashh · 30/12/2024 03:26

My mother and her sister wrote to each other from the time my aunt (her sister) moved to Australia in 1966 until my mother's death.

They were certainly using MIL in the 1970s.

That's also the fist time I saw 'O' being used for a hug, one of my cousins had asked, "If X means kiss what is a hug?"

@SushiSheep The bat is another mumsnet classic that was from maybe 15-20 years ago!

I tried to find the original post but search faculty on here is shockingly shit, so you'll have to rely on my rubbish memory. Unless someone can find the original thread. Wonder if it's as funny as I remember?

Anyway I think the OP had made something for an Easter bonnet, posted the picture and it looked terrifying, although may be getting two threads mixed up.

Much hilarity ensued and for about 10 or so years the bat picture and for some reason which I can't remember, Terry Wogans's crotch picture were posted when appropriate.

I miss those days ;)

Hskatkat · 30/12/2024 09:09

@2025Y did the original include a YouTube video link?

2025Y · 30/12/2024 10:15

@Hskatkat I don't remember lost in the mists of time! Hahaha

Hskatkat · 30/12/2024 10:23

@2025Y I did an image search because I had forgotten and it brought up a thread with a link a man cannot be a bat/ boys will be girls on YouTube it was GC (?) but I'm unsure if that's the true origin.
I think it'd before my time though so could be wrong.

Oh yes Style and Beauty- the people who put a link up to My Theresa for someone who is looking for a dress or whatever.

Also the Brora ( has to be) cashmere brigade 😂

SushiSheep · 30/12/2024 12:02

@RapunzelsSplitEnds omg that bat was made for an Easter bonnet?! 😂
Terrifying indeed.
I can well imagine that would go down as a MN classic.

Was it true that there was some homemade "tat" for sale online, and everyone was laughing over it but then the maker/seller came on here and caused a "bunfight"? (Something like this scenario anyway, I might be making it up 😆)

Oooh, or was it a cake of some sort?
I may be misremembering!

InMySpareTime · 30/12/2024 12:50

There was a giant monstrosity of Christmas tat that was listed on eBay for a huge price, every year it was relisted because loads of MNers people watched it, but IIRC nobody ever offered on it.

InMySpareTime · 30/12/2024 12:53

This is the most recent thread about it:

Anyone remember the 12 Days of Christmas MASSIVE table decoration centrepiece for sale on eBay? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/5010970-anyone-remember-the-12-days-of-christmas-massive-table-decoration-centrepiece-for-sale-on-ebay

RapunzelsSplitEnds · 30/12/2024 13:03

SushiSheep The Easter bonnet was a masterpiece!

I can’t remember the origins of Soupy the bat but MNs used to do a link with ‘don’t open this’ which we all did then groaned and swore.

Hepzibar · 30/12/2024 13:06

Telling the OP 'if that was my X I'd tell them/him/her to Fuck off'. No you wouldn't.

I think some posters are just desperate to join in and post the cringing 'LTB, get your ducks in row etc.'

MN is nowhere near as cliquey as it used to be, but can't stand the references to old threads - cancel the cheque, naive ham, old Spanish woman or some such title, think it's a bit sad tbh

I got mixed up! I thought Soupy the Bat was part of the aforementioned Easter bonnet but I’m not sure the real bonnet is any less scary 😁
Thanks for sharing the pics.
Gutted I’ve missed so much 😅

@Hepzibar what’s he story behind ‘Cancel the cheque’? I’ve seen it referenced quite a few times on this thread now.
I also like the sound of naive ham 😂

@SushiSheep 😂 mine's definitely better - I've just started a new 'in joke'.

From what I remember it was a poster who's sent a cheque to her niece/god-daughter/relative for her wedding and then didn't get invited/or some such thing- it's all a bit vague. The thread went in on with various excuses whilst posters were all begging her to 'cancel the cheque'.

Hepzibar · 30/12/2024 13:36

One term I've come across on here and nowhere else is 'javelin arse', which I presume is some sort of sudden stabbing pain in the nether regions.

The point was that the OP said very early on that the cheque had indeed been cancelled, but still hundreds of people kept telling her to cancel it.

It became a byword for “read OP’s updates before you post”.

It was mitigated a bit when the “see all” feature was introduced allowing posters to see all OP’s posts more easily.
