I could cry - my bloody teeth

Last night I started with toothache it was an intense throbbing and I knew something wasn't right. I managed to get some sleep and when I woke the pain was not so bad. My dentist is open today and I managed to get an appointment.
I've got an infection in a tooth that has previously had a root canal.

I've been prescribed anti biotics and I'm to go back next week for either, an extraction or root canal. Unfortunately I'm private and the cost of root canal is extortionate. Dentist did say antibiotics might work and I could leave it but infection is likely to return.

I could cry I am really dentist phobic and the thought of having my tooth extracted is freaking me out. It's a lower pre molar. I'm getting intermittent pain today and I've not needed painkillers until now all day. I've had upper molars removed that weren't too bad when being extracted.

I am gutted - about 8 years ago I got an abscess around the same time after Christmas and here I am again.

You could scrub your tongue, toothpaste won't hurt it now and clean your other teeth like normal now. Just the two on either side I'd do with a toothpaste cotton bud so you have more control.

I have to have one out soon, dreading it. Hope my remaining wisdom teeth will continue their exemplary behaviour.

If you ever get dry socket you'll understand the paranoia about avoiding it. 😂

I would rather swim with sharks.

It doesn't matter how much I scrub the furry feeling just won't go. I'm only gently brushing the teeth next to the extracted one. I tried to give my tonight a good scrub earlier but I was worried about gipping so didn't go to town on it.

Im maybe not drinking enough fluids 🤔 I'll try using a cotton bud to gently clean the ones next to it. You seem very knowledgeable on these matters!

All looks ok today but it does feel a little swollen around the gum. Is this normal? It's slightly sore but not painful

@Intheoldendays how are you doing? Have you been back to the dentist yet?

I think tonight I'm going to cave and have that wine. Its been a hell of a a day. Extraction was Friday so I'm guessing it should be ok now. Found the care sheet from my dentist and that said no alcohol for the first 24 hours so I've well exceeded that.

I have extra teeth. Like a bloody shark. Some I've had out, plus 2 wisdom teeth out. Annoyingly they never erupt somewhere useful.

Yeah sore is normal. You've been pulled about with a lot of force. Couple weeks you'll be good as new. Enjoy the wine.

Thehouseisatip · 07/01/2025 20:24

@Balloonhearts it's gone off a little now. I actually think it's from talking more at work and the inside of my mouth catches the gum.

I am going to enjoy the wine - I do feel a little nervous though about having one!

Hiya! Sorry - been dealing with cat/vet issues today!! I'm back to see her tomorrow. All is calm mouth wise right now and I'm actually feeling OK about going. I'm going to ask for it out - and valium beforehand for the appointment!!

Intheoldendays · 08/01/2025 14:39

I'm about to go in and quote anxious now!! It's still low level throbbing. So depressed about it all to be honest

I cried slightly!! It's coming out next week. She thinks it's the best option and I agree. I have 5mg diazepam to take before, so it should all be ok. Just want the bloody thing gone!!
Just the aftermath I worry about. I've had three others taken out, and it's always been fine, so as long as I behave....

How's you know?

Thehouseisatip · 08/01/2025 17:02

Oh you poor thing. I did think maybe I should have got some Diazepam before hand but I didn't think I'd be as anxious as I was.

I'm alright now, it all seems ok. Fingers crossed 🤞

How are things? Have you had your tooth out yet?

Since having mine out my teeth have been permanently coated and furry it's driving me nuts. Is this normal? I have a little cavity in my lower incisor next to the tooth that was extracted and I don't know if it's that causing this or the tooth being extracted?

Intheoldendays · 14/01/2025 13:37

Maybe you can just feel it now? My d day is tomorrow. I veer from terror to can't wait to get it over with!
I can't remember the last time so also worrying about that - how it actually is to be done

Thehouseisatip · 14/01/2025 15:21

It'll be over quicker than you think. Honestly I probably spent longer telling crying to the dentist about my fears than it took for him to take it out.

I'm probably going to have to make another appointment at mine to get looked at. The furriness is driving me mad. I've no sooner bruised my teeth and they're all coated again.

Thank you!!! That does sound rubbish!! Do you have a horrible taste as well?

Intheoldendays · 14/01/2025 16:15

I do have my 5mg valium to get me giggling and swaying I guess 😅

No horrible taste, just dry, furry teeth and tongue no matter what!

I should have got diazepam it might have been less traumatic for me.

I've never even thought to ask for it. I'm surprised they've never offered me it given how panicked I get.

I was like that the evening before. The anticipation is definitely the worst part. Is your appointment early in the day or later?
If I can do it, you can! I'm with you every step of the way.

I am due to get a tooth out in a couple of weeks and am absolutely dreading it. I also have a root canal that has become infected. Although there isn’t any pain for me. But dentist seems to think it needs out. They have said they could do a re do of the root canal but that is likely to fail.
I am so sad about having a missing tooth in my mouth. It’s a first molar on the bottom so it’s a really big tooth

My options were to have the root canal re done or extraction. I knew I only had one option as root canals eventually fail. Aside from that I'm private and couldn't afford the cost of root canal and a crown.

It is daunting and I made myself quite ill worrying about it but once it's out you know it can't cause you further troubles.

I've had three other back obes removed over the past 15 years or so, so I kind of know it's actually going to be ok! Still bloody horrible waiting.
It's at 3 pm. I'm working in the morning, so I will be a bundle of laughs for sure!

Did you just leaves the gaps? Has it been ok to adjust to that?
