I could cry - my bloody teeth

Thehouseisatip · 27/12/2024 14:29

Last night I started with toothache it was an intense throbbing and I knew something wasn't right. I managed to get some sleep and when I woke the pain was not so bad. My dentist is open today and I managed to get an appointment.
I've got an infection in a tooth that has previously had a root canal.

I've been prescribed anti biotics and I'm to go back next week for either, an extraction or root canal. Unfortunately I'm private and the cost of root canal is extortionate. Dentist did say antibiotics might work and I could leave it but infection is likely to return.

I could cry I am really dentist phobic and the thought of having my tooth extracted is freaking me out. It's a lower pre molar. I'm getting intermittent pain today and I've not needed painkillers until now all day. I've had upper molars removed that weren't too bad when being extracted.

I am gutted - about 8 years ago I got an abscess around the same time after Christmas and here I am again.

Just eat on the other side. Drinking water won't do it any harm at all. If anything is going to do it'll be the vape.

I'll keep off it as long as I can manage to. If I can do today then i shall see how o do tomorrow

Really really try to not vape, any sort of suction will affect healing.
Luke warm salt water just held in your mouth over the socket, don't swish!

Thehouseisatip · 03/01/2025 21:25

I haven't vaped at all and I wont today.

It's been 24 hours and I haven't vaped. Starting to feel a bit tetchy now though about it, I've only had one dose of paracetamol yesterday and one dose of ibuprofen. My mouth just feels very sore. I'm going to do a saltwater rinse shortly and give the rest of my teeth a gentle brush.

I'm also still ravenous- yesterday I only ate some carrot and coriander soup, a small portion of scrambled egg and a kefir drink.

I still haven't vaped...yet. I'm starting to get a little agitated now though. I'd like nothing more than to have a glass of wine and a vape to relax.

I haven't needed any pain relief today. The area and teeth nearby just feel sore. I'm already over having bloody soup and yoghurts.

Pain has just started in the last hour I've been fine since having it out. Hope this isn't the start of something

Try not to worry or panic ( said by Mrs 'letspanicabouteverysingletwingeever) take ibuprofen and see how it goes

Thehouseisatip · 05/01/2025 10:30

I took ibuprofen and that eased it. My gums are incredibly sore and I seem to be getting pain in the teeth next to where it was pulled.

I'll be getting a courtesy call from the dentists tomorrow so I'll see what they say.

I caved and had a little 'gentle' vape this morning.

Balloonhearts · 05/01/2025 12:44

Try and have a look at it in the mirror is the blood clot and granulation tissue still in there? If you do vape try and at least cover the socket gently with your tongue to keep from sucking on it. You're doing really well holding off on it.

Thehouseisatip · 05/01/2025 13:16

It all looks ok, I do have a pic but I'm not sure all on sundry on here would want to see without a spoiler!

Its quite difficult to see properly but what I can see it is all healed and white.

I've just been having a gentle vape at the side of my mouth that's ok and barely drawing on it at all.

OP posts:
Balloonhearts · 06/01/2025 14:55

It's likely ok, you will be a bit sore as its quite traumatic to the gums and teeth either side to be pulled about like that. Another couple of days and you should be clear for the risk of dry socket. I still wouldn't go nuts until its totally closed but most people who get it, get it in the first week.

Thehouseisatip · 06/01/2025 15:38

My dentist called me today to check on how I was. I think all is ok.

I've been back at work so it feels a little swollen but it's probably to do with the amount of talking I have to do in my job. I haven't had to take anymore pain killers.

I'm still only gently vaping, I could quite happily do with a glass of wine this evening but still unsure whether it would be safe to do so?

Amazing you're back at work. Great stuff. Can't advise on the wine I'm afraid!!

Balloonhearts · 06/01/2025 19:00

I wouldn't do the wine. Not for the sake of a couple more days. Nothing fizzy either. Nothing that might dissolve or dislodge that clot. Once the bottom is healed over you can go nuts. That usually only takes a week. 2 weeks and the whole thing will be closed.

Thehouseisatip · 06/01/2025 19:02

It's just a little sore really, nothing that's needed pain relief.
I'm keeping up with salt rinses, I just have a really furry tongue and teeth and it's driving me mad.

I've just found my dentists advice letter and it says to avoid alcohol for 24hrs. So by their advice I'm fine to have a drink, I still feel a little apprehensive though just in case.

I'm really craving a nice glass of wine though!

I've just seen your reply. I was going to say I'll have a cbd drink instead but they're fizzy I think!

I'll hold out another few days.

I managed to eat a proper meal though tonight, a sausage and tomato pasta and it was lovely. Very tiny bite size pieces of sausage and soft pasta. It was so good to have what felt like actual food!

I'm very tempted to have one but also wary! I think I'm going to give it another day at least then maybe have one tomorrow evening.

Extractions are quick and cheap but if you have the money then saving the tooth is normally the best way forward.
