I could cry - my bloody teeth

Thehouseisatip · 27/12/2024 14:29

Last night I started with toothache it was an intense throbbing and I knew something wasn't right. I managed to get some sleep and when I woke the pain was not so bad. My dentist is open today and I managed to get an appointment.
I've got an infection in a tooth that has previously had a root canal.

I've been prescribed anti biotics and I'm to go back next week for either, an extraction or root canal. Unfortunately I'm private and the cost of root canal is extortionate. Dentist did say antibiotics might work and I could leave it but infection is likely to return.

I could cry I am really dentist phobic and the thought of having my tooth extracted is freaking me out. It's a lower pre molar. I'm getting intermittent pain today and I've not needed painkillers until now all day. I've had upper molars removed that weren't too bad when being extracted.

I am gutted - about 8 years ago I got an abscess around the same time after Christmas and here I am again.

Just got back. He said it was a sign the infection is moving 😣and not to worry unless it gets bigger. I was, at this point, glancing at dh (who has to accompany me everywhere medical - he has taken the 'in sickness' to the extreme since we've been married - I have a few medical issues!) saying 'IS IT BIGGER????? and he was shaking his head....

Anyway, I have to finish my current anti b's and he's done me another lot - erythromycin this time (I'm allergic to penicillin) to take if I still feel any pain after the others have finished.

Poor dentist!

How are you today?

At least you managed to get in to see your dentist and you have further antibiotics to take if you need them. Fingers crossed you won't need them and it will settle for you.

I'm ok today. I was a little swollen when I woke up similar to the other days. However, it's gone down again now I'm up and about. I haven't had any Pain relief since 11pm last night. I'm sore but that's been about it today. I'm aware of the infection and that's area of my mouth being tender.

My dentist have text today to confirm my extraction on Friday. I think I'm still going to go ahead with it as I know even if it settles the fucker will just flare up again at the most inconvenient time.

I'm glad the pain is easing off, at least.

I do think it will keep coming back so yes, extraction is going to save you pain in the long run. I hope it's swift and painless 🌺

Thehouseisatip · 30/12/2024 16:03

@SilviaDaisyPouncer Thankyou, it will be what it will be. I can't do anything to change this. I'm petrified but I've had extractions before albeit on upper teeth.

Extractions aren't the ideal way to spend half an hour I must admit, nut like you, I'd rather get rid of it than continue worrying it'll come roaring back!!
I'm glad I've had this thread to be on over the past few days! Although obviously not even slightly happy more of us are going through this!

This thread has helped me. I'm sure my DH by now would be sick of me rambling on about tooth.
Being anxious makes everything a million times worse and knowing I can get it off my chest here has eased some of my fears and worries.

I'm glad you started the thread. My failed RTC has finally developed a big abscess, although thankfully it isn't at all painful. I've been going backwards and forwards over what to do with it for ages now. On the one hand, it's not bothering me. On the other, abscess!

It's been helpful to see what other people have chosen to do with their bothersome tooth. I'm seeing a dentist in the New Year so hopefully it'll either be fixed or yanked soon

CaptainBeanThief · 30/12/2024 16:45

I've always looked after my teeth and when I was in itu and they ventilated me they knocked out one of my back teeth but my root is still in, this is the second infection I've had now and my tooth is absolutely killing me, I can't get in to my dentist.
They couldn't take the root out there last time as the root is touching my previous jaw surgery plate so I've been waiting for surgery for it. I'm in agony so you are not alone 😬

Oh god, I am so sorry. It's THE worst pain isn't it? I called 111 yesterday as I was panicking about my swelling, and they have a 'is it a dental issue?' option, which meant, when I was called back, they gave info on potential nearby nhs dentists who may help. In my case they were about 40 miles away.....but would that be worth trying?

Thehouseisatip · 30/12/2024 17:39

Oh my! You poor thing as @Intheoldendays has said could you try 111?

So I haven't had to take painkillers today. Dare I have a glass of wine this evening?

No luckily I'm taking amoxicillin. I may have a wine & lemonade. Then that way if pain does start I will probably be ok to have a paracetamol!

Absolutely!! I don't drink (sober alcoholic) so it always makes me laugh when I'm told DO NOT DRINK WITH THESE ANTIBIOTICS very sternly!
It would have annoyed me greatly in the past though 😃

How are you today?

The treatment for dental pain or a dental abscess is an extraction, or a root canal treatment. Your dentist shouldn't just be palming you off with antibiotics, especially not a course to take incase you still feel pain!

If your pain doesn't resolve go back and insist your dentist actually treats you.

Intheoldendays · 30/12/2024 20:13

Yes. I'm going back to see my actual dentist at the practice next week. He is another partner and feels that I can wait a few days.
I will be asking for it to be out don't worry!

I've usually been prescribed Metronidazole for dental infections.
I was a little relieved when they gave me Amoxicillin as I knew it meant I could have a little tipple if I wanted one.

Well i have a Gin. Just hope it doesn't knock me out and I forget to take my next dose of antibiotic!

I am in a similar boat OP. Broken tooth that has now died so is finally painless but has a low level gum infection. It’s not painful so I’ve left it be. The last couple of weeks the front side of the tooth (upper first molar) is now loose and wobbles. It needs to come out but I’m dental phobic 😩

Intheoldendays · 31/12/2024 14:45

I'm actually feeling the best I have so far! I managed to sleep UNTIL MY PIGGING HUSBAND STARTED SNORNG FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BLOODY WEEKS!!! Bahhhh.

Anyway, I've been into work this morning and managed to make calls and appointments, talking normally - told everyone about how horrendous my xmas had been - got taken the mickey out of by some medical professionals I work with, who really should know better😄and am actually pretty pain free. The swelling seems a lot smaller - hooray!

I totally get that. It's a horrible fear. Do you have a dentist?

Thehouseisatip · 31/12/2024 14:59

I'm panicking about the swelling a little bit. It's not really that visible it's just I can feel it. I feel quite nauseous today, don't know if that's because I had a wee drink last night or it's the antibiotics making me feel crap or from not eating much for the last few days.

Or all of the above.

Oh, bless you. I have spent most of the past 36 hours looking in the mirror and saying,'Does it look bigger?' We are super aware of it, aren't we?
I've also felt a bit sicky today - the antibiotocs are super strong, remember, and I guess we will feel them.

Try not to panic. HAHAHAHAHA..says Mrs panic knickers mc panic

I'm starting to get anxious about it now. I thought it would have gone off more by now. I finish my antibiotics tomorrow morning. I don't even think my swelling is that visible but I can feel it. All along my lower jaw line is sore and swollen.

I'll see how I go. I think because I'm starting to get anxious I'm making it worse. I'm constantly prodding and poking at the area with my tongue and clenching my teeth which is probably aggravating it.

I'll see how it goes and if necessary I'll
Call my own dentist on Thursday morning and see if they'll see me sooner.
