I have attended many Christmas markets over the years. They are so crowded especially at the moment as German children finished school for the Christmas holidays. Frightening, my prayers are with all the victim's šŸ™

@Treetops11 Hush! We're not allowed to see it, believe our eyes or talk about it.

Nope.. nothing to see here, just another lone wolf attack..
How many lone wolves does it take to make up a pack?
Wonder if the mental health card will be pulled?

The Guardian is reporting 68 injured and two dead, this morning. Nothing further about the suspect.
He certainly copied the 2016 attack.
Why this hate of families preparing for Christmas? There is other thread about this which has turned into an eye opener, from what some posters are spouting out.
Dislike or attempts to remove the word Christmas or change parts of the cultural celebrations, I have only ever come across it in MN, on a thread yesterday, precisely. Never in real life.

I wish a prompt recovery for all the injured. So sad about the families who have lost loved ones.
And Germany, and all Europe, needs to start putting up barriers as a consistent measure.

CoalTit · 21/12/2024 06:47

Now it's all over Twix that the attacker is an anti-Islam, pro-zionist AdF supporter, with what looks like a Wall Street Journal article saying so. His Twix account has been taken down but not fast enough to stop people taking and reposting screenshots.

Buy he obviously hates Christians to carry out such a horrific evil attack.

It's everywhere, nativities being changed into winter performances with penguins & seals instead of Mary & Joseph..
Winter lights instead of Christmas lights... all in the name of "inclusivity"

@Treetops11 who are these groups wanting the removal of these things? Can you name them specifically so I can do some research?

I've seen two nativities this term, made Christingle oranges, and been to church with my class (I'm a teacher), so what you are saying really doesn't ring true with me at all. We aren't a church school either. My daughter's nursery also did a xmas play featuring Mary, Joseph and Jesus. I've also been to two Christmas lights (not winter lights) displays.

Agree 100%.. there are plenty of groups here kn the UK demanding the word Christmas be removed from schools.. want nativities, cribs, carols banned. Why move to a country then try dictate the status quo?
Even look at those calling Christmas lights winter lights... the pushback must be immense. We cannot bow down to this.

No there aren't. Name one. Don't use this tragedy to spread racist lies.

Absolute rubbish!!! This is nothing to do with this tragedy. And not even true.

He was specifically not a Muslim....what motivated this terrible attack I've no idea.

BefuddledCrumble · 21/12/2024 00:01

I have some bad news for you...

The UK isn't far behind Germany at all. If you have the option, I'd suggest going for a country with far stricter immigration policies.

So you're suggesting we don't allow highly trained professionals into the NHS? How is that going to work. This is a terrible tragedy but typical Mumsnet is now going all "reform" and racist rhetoric when that's not the point. I'm very upset about this story but really hope Muslims won't be attacked like after Southport (which wasn't an immigrant or a Muslim)

CheeseTime · 21/12/2024 08:14

According to MSM he is an ex Muslim with a grievance against Germans for taking in too many Muslims. Specifically for allowing migration of Islamists rather than his chosen group of Saudi people fleeing Islamism.

Anyway. All caused by religion, hatred and intolerance and a culture of feeling ones own grievances are best displayed by going on a murderous rampage against innocent people.

And of course it’s a man.

What absolute nonsense. Where are you getting this, the Daily Mail?

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/12/2024 08:27

A lot of the extra characters you get in Nativity plays these days are nothing to do with a so called "war on Christmas" but more an attempt to give more children interesting parts in the play. Traditionally you get five good parts and 2346532 angels and shepherds.

TeamPolin · 21/12/2024 08:29

@Ginmonkeyagain

2nd lobster! šŸ¦ž

Covidwoes · 21/12/2024 08:36

@Eggseggslegs there are a number of Reform types online (mainly on X), who are notorious for spreading around conspiracy shite like "Nativities banned across Britain!" with no credible source (of course šŸ™„). Either that, or their 'source' is the Daily Fail. Not a typo!

@Treetops11 mentions 'groups', but is so far unable to name any. I wonder why...

Isn't that just DM propaganda? I've never seen any actual examples in real life.

I have never come across this in real life. Only people on social media claiming it happens.

I'm a governor at two schools and have a child at another. All did a traditional nativity, carol services in church etc.

Nousernamesleftatall · 21/12/2024 09:01

Awful. Another Muslim terror attack.

In Dublin they have changed the Christmas lights ceremony to Winter lights.

@CheeseTime

"According to MSM he is an ex Muslim with a grievance against Germans for taking in too many Muslims. Specifically for allowing migration of Islamists rather than his chosen group of Saudi people fleeing Islamism"

This makes no sense at all.

So it is being suggested that an anti Islamist decides to attack a Christmas market at Christmas time - was he expecting there to be large numbers of Islamists at this Christmas market?

Exactly that makes zero sense.

My family have mentioned going to these markets before and I’ve said no due to this happening before and sadly this has proved me right not to go. Absolutely devastating.

CamptainChewingGum · 21/12/2024 09:17

The other thread was pulled because of trolls. Hope this can stand to express sympathy or just talk about something that feels so horrible and unfathomable to most of us. Please don' make any inferences about "all Muslims". Jihadist politics are being promoted online as are other extremist movements. Let's see what they find out about this terrorist and his motives. Someone upthread mentioned a sleeper cell, which is a possibility and it's obviously easy to fake an online profile expressing sympathy to something you are actually against. Who knows. What this has cause though is anger, confusion hurt and more confusion. In the end it won't matter whether he is a jihadist or not but that he is a refugee from the Middle East who attacked his host country that presumably saved his life? Otherwise he wouldn't be a legitimate refuge.

RayonSunrise · 21/12/2024 09:28

Der Spiegel also now reporting he was an AdF sympathiser. All sorts get attracted to extremist causes - look at the guy in Britain who murdered a British MP because he decided she was too liberal. You have to be pretty screwed up to plough into a crowd of people with a car.
