Does this ring look cheap / tacky

I rarely wear jewellery but trying to change that, as always admire others ‘everyday’ / signature jewellery.

During their BF sale I picked up this Monica vinader ring as I loved the look of it on the model, but worry it maybe looks a bit tacky to be wearing yellowy gold jewellery. Opinions please?

if it’s of any relevance I have dark skin (warm toned) so guidance is to wear gold jewellery. However whenever I look around silver is far more common for ‘everyday’ looks

I like it. But DH bought me a MV pendant last Christmas. The vermeil is already wearing off to show the silver underneath and the other day the chain broke. TBF I had barely taken it off all year. But don't expect it to stay gold for very long unless it is occasional wear.

Take it back, they replace things for up to 5 years I think. I think it's hugely over priced for something that wears off but people really love her pieces. I was given a pair of silver earrings which are lovely.

Daisy jewellery is nice - and really doesn't wear down like other gold plated jewellery I have, so must be better quality.

Pinkpurpletulips · 17/12/2024 05:32

Maybe it's the photograph but it looks a little bit skimpy and I always wear fairly delicate pieces being on the fine boned side. Plus it's only gold plated and will soon show signs of wear. Plated jewellery that gets heavy wear always does. You are more likely to get away with a plated item if it's say a brooch or earrings or something you wear for special occasions. Rings show wear really quickly.

Instead of buying cheaper plate, save up for a solid piece from a proper jeweller - no type of plate wears well, no matter who made it. Nine carat gold is hard wearing and durable and a lot of jewellery is made of it, rather than the more expensive 18 carat gold. I don't think there is anything wrong with the colour - I wear lots of gold - I stuck to the theme of my wedding and engagement rings which are gold. There are always fashions but I think yellow gold is enjoying a revival after white gold and rose gold.

Years ago I too bought a plated item not realising what it was - the jeweller bluntly told me that it simply not worth replating. I haven't succumbed to a plated piece since despite seeing lots of cute pieces.

Yes, it is not cheap but tacky. Like something from Argos.

it's not.

But you don't like it, fine, you don't have to buy it or wear it.

I think it definitely looks cheaper than the price, but I don’t think it’s tacky. Boho moon does similar looking stuff that’s actually cheap (around a tenner) if you fancy a look. If you go off it you’re not out of pocket.

larkstar · 17/12/2024 11:50

I'm thinking - does that need a Phillips or a Pozidriv screwdriver?

Gettingbysomehow · 17/12/2024 12:07

I always used to wear silver but I'm fed up with it now and have gone over to waterproof 18k gold plated and it looks much nicer, I'm also not having to clean it constantly.

ffsfindmeausername · 17/12/2024 15:49

very classic i remember my friend having a ring very much like that in the early 90s.
Why is the majority of gold jewellery vermeil these days which I'm sure is silver with gold plating. it will tarnish eventually as the thin layer of gold wears away. it's seems most high street jewels sell this now and not much solid gold which is a shame. although I know gold is mega expensive these days.

SallyWD · 17/12/2024 16:00

I was expecting to see a cheap, tacky ring but that's gorgeous!

I used to think yellow gold was tacky but now I feel the opposite. It seems like everyone is wearing white gold so to me yellow gold looks classy. I have two beautiful antique yellow gold rings I wear every day. They are in no way tacky.

Welshcakes28 · 17/12/2024 17:09

I have brown skin and only wear yellow gold. But I don't like very yellowy gold - I find the 18ct yellow gold plating from MV is too yellow for my taste. I find the same with Indian gold. My engagement ring is an antique piece and alot less yellow and I love it.
I think for jewellery wear what you like. I personally don't like wearing silver with brown skin.

Because it's cheap. I bought a beautiful gold vermeil necklace that looks like real gold but it's £19. I can't afford real gold right now. But if this lasts a few years then great.

Aberentian · 17/12/2024 17:55

Yellow gold is classic not tacky! I hate all the cold-looking white gold everyone wears these days.

Frith2013 · 17/12/2024 17:57

I have olive skin/dark hair and eyes and only wear silver.

ChopstickNovice · 18/12/2024 07:58

I love it!

I'm of East Asian heritage though and usually wear yellow gold.

TheYeaSayer · 18/12/2024 10:37

Rings like this were all the rage amongst girls in the 70s, little gold signet rings. I had one!

It’s a cute ring, but I don’t know why you’d buy a gold plated one for the same price as you could get a 9ct gold one for.

Good idea. I will. Need to find the receipt and box. It was a year ago.

NameChanged100thTime · 18/12/2024 19:16

I like gold, it's a lovely ring. Just bear in mind that the gold may wear off quite quickly. It's only a very thin layer. That's what happened with my vinader bracelet and necklace, despite taking it off in shower and at night.

SabreIsMyFave · 18/12/2024 20:49

Not tacky all all. It's very nice. Smile

ThatKhakiMoose · 18/12/2024 20:58

Tacky? No way! It's simple and beautiful, and I bet it looks lovely with your warm skin tone.

AbominablePloughMan · 18/12/2024 23:26

A good friend of mine wears that on her little finger.

I don’t really like it but she obviously does !

Well @unfold1 - if yellow gold is tacky - I'll take that on the chin. My wedding ring , engagement ring , watch and a bracelet are all yellow gold. I wear them every day. After 30 years I have seen silver , platinum , rose gold etc come in and out of fashion but I think mine suit me & I don't think they look tacky. I am sure other opinions are available.

I think the ring is pretty and not ostentatious so it's a yes from me to wear it.

Same. I married 30 yrs ago and my rings are yellow gold. Ditto a watch, bracelet, earrings...

Me too. Married 33 years.

I don't like yellow gold on me anymore but it is what it is!

Nichebitch · 19/12/2024 09:15

It’s not tacky at all, I love it, and MV is great value - you can’t compare a 10 pounds ring to a proper quality one, just not the same product at all. Stay away from disposable stuff!
Btw since when is yellow gold tacky? Maybe rose gold is, yellow is definitely not.

FriendsDrinkBook · 19/12/2024 10:20

I have that ring. Its very nice on and I wear it all of the time. I hope you like it once it arrives.
