Does this ring look cheap / tacky

unfold1 · 15/12/2024 21:36

I rarely wear jewellery but trying to change that, as always admire others ‘everyday’ / signature jewellery.

During their BF sale I picked up this Monica vinader ring as I loved the look of it on the model, but worry it maybe looks a bit tacky to be wearing yellowy gold jewellery. Opinions please?

if it’s of any relevance I have dark skin (warm toned) so guidance is to wear gold jewellery. However whenever I look around silver is far more common for ‘everyday’ looks

There is a right way to take this comment? This is why ethical, legitimate UK businesses, who play by the rules, pay their taxes and pay their staff fairly are struggling to stay in business. You - and all the others who understand the cost of everything and the value of nothing - will ultimately get the economy and the ecology you deserve. Hope the 78p Temu rings taste good.

it's not to my own taste, but I wouldn't say it's tacky. it's simple and very classic. and it sounds like it will look good on your skin tone.

Whoooaaa · 28/12/2024 11:19

Honestly when I looked at it I thought it was made of wood! Pretty though.

Pyaar · 28/12/2024 11:28

MV have a great warranty policy and will replace or repair it for 5 years if you have any issue with the gold, or free resizing etc

takeoffeh · 28/12/2024 18:23

I'm not into gold at all, but with your colouring it would look good I think.
I like it's simplicity, you could wear it anytime, anywhere.
It's a good choice if you're just beginning to wear jewellery.
You might get a similar ring, or maybe the same for less ££, look around, but good not to invest too much for gold if you end up not liking to wear jewellery.

WellsAndThistles · 29/12/2024 02:13

Nothing wrong with yellow gold. Not my choice for a ring though as it kind of looks like my cats bum 🤣

Bfmamma · 29/12/2024 19:27

I don't get why you think yellow gold is tacky, all my jewellery is gold?
I don't think I would wear the ring as it's not my style but if you like it, it's no one else's business

I like it. But DH bought me a MV pendant last Christmas. The vermeil is already wearing off to show the silver underneath and the other day the chain broke. TBF I had barely taken it off all year. But don't expect it to stay gold for very long unless it is occasional wear.

Monica Vinader quality is awful - I don’t buy it any more and I’ve told DP not to get me any.

But OP I think that’s a very nice ring and not at all tacky.

I have had to send 3 pieces of Monica Vinader jewellery back to get them fixed. Lovely design. Crap quality.

TheOGCCL · 30/12/2024 17:27

I think this is a classy ring, definitely not tacky.

Eldermillennial2024 · 30/12/2024 17:28

It's fine

booisbooming · 31/12/2024 12:40

Most of the time I think MV just looks like & Other Stories with ideas above its station but I think OP's ring is really nice.

mitogoshigg · 31/12/2024 12:43

Nothing tacky about real gold

IridiumSky · 31/12/2024 13:52

Perfectly nice ring, not ostentatious and entirely unremarkable.

But it’s very thin gold plate pretending to be something it isn’t. Anything pretending to be something else is by definition uncool. Don’t expect it to last long. But so what? Wear whatever you like.

It’s not real gold. It’s very thin gold plate. The advertising is, in my opinion, misleading.

HAB75 · 31/12/2024 14:58

At the great risk of being unpopular, I have always found that particular brand exceptionally overpriced for what you get. I have never understood why Liberty decided to sell it because, ultimately, it is throwaway and not terribly interesting. The designs are standard - this particular model was a very standard ring in the eighties and all they've done is rough it up a bit. Very honestly, I only see throwaway fashion and fail to see the beauty. I know it is plated silver (vermeil) so not as terrible as it might be, but I personally think plate is a waste. I wear gold myself, or a combination of both (not plated) and I'd say there are a number of individual makers much more worthy of your hard-earned. Hannah Bedford is just one example of a jeweller who uses both, keeping down costs, without resorting to plate. I think you can find something you love for not much more, which you'll just want to buy without asking others. With jewellery, buy the best you can, and only you need to love it!

EnchantedAutumn · 31/12/2024 21:00

you say you are 'worried' it may look tacky.
But what do YOU think?
What perspective are you judging it from? Is it from your own, private feelings or what you fear others might think?

It's great to have that confidence to know what you love and to own it.
People notice THAT, it's elusive, enviable and feels great.
I recently began to wear my hair natural and absolutely love it. As no one complimented me in the first 3 weeks I began to doubt it looked nice at all and wondered if I was deluded.

Then I thought about it and realised no one cared, and every time I accidentally caught myself in a mirror my hair looked lovely and made me smile. I would have envied it on someone else's head, yet never knew before.
That alone made me make up my mind to keep it this way. Since then, the compliments rolled in.

Apply this to anything really.

EnchantedAutumn · 31/12/2024 21:06

And sadly MN will confirm your fears, whatever they are, since MN isn't a hive mind and we all share different opinions (which is why i love it).

It's sod's law that someone will tell you on here that your ring is tacky!
Reasons might include:
People are afraid of looking poor.
People are afraid of looking unfashionable.
People are afraid of looking tacky!
People choose jewellery and other things to impress others or to suggest a higher social status because they are human and live in a complex society.

All that said, jewellery is best chosen from the heart, usually.

Ariadneefron · 01/01/2025 11:54

Asking the anonymous public if it's tacky, you sound like you're worrying what other people might think. Don't! Just wear what pleases you. Do you like it? Then it's nice. Trust in your own good judgment.

The truth is, most people aren't really thinking about other people at all or noticing what they wear beyond the broadest strokes. Unless you are at extreme ends of fashionable or unfashionable - 'this person is Victoria Beckham herself' vs 'this person last bought clothes at a jumble sale in1983 and doesn't own a mirror', everyone else who is in between is a vague blur of ' fine', ' quite nice' and 'I had no idea that the person I sat next to at your wedding was even possession of a body, never mind what clothes they had on it'.

Even if people are noticing a bit it's generally not at the micro level of ' that small gold ring is tacky'. People notice if you are nice, and if you are you can wear what you like.

EscCtrl · 01/01/2025 16:19

Not tacky at all. Wot it needs is a proper sovereign which shows you ain't poor, and useful if ever you get into a fight after a few vodka redbulls in the Dog and Giro pub on the housing estate.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 01/01/2025 16:37

That ring brings back memories to me that I had one very similar as a teen. No idea what happened to it.

If the ring in this picture is like the one I had, it was quite delicate so I can't see how this could be considered tacky ?

LisaD76 · 06/01/2025 06:18

Ring style and size is fine, but If I were you I would go to a pawnbroker and buy a second hand ring in gold rather than buy something that’s costume at almost £80. It’s way overpriced because of the brand but will wear out just the same, you could buy gold plated sterling silver for about £30-40, at least when it wears you could polish off and still have a silver ring.
