Does this ring look cheap / tacky

unfold1 · 15/12/2024 21:36

I rarely wear jewellery but trying to change that, as always admire others ‘everyday’ / signature jewellery.

During their BF sale I picked up this Monica vinader ring as I loved the look of it on the model, but worry it maybe looks a bit tacky to be wearing yellowy gold jewellery. Opinions please?

if it’s of any relevance I have dark skin (warm toned) so guidance is to wear gold jewellery. However whenever I look around silver is far more common for ‘everyday’ looks

Monica Vinader replaced a ring and a pendant of mine where the gold vermeil had worn off- they will do this for jewellery that was purchased less than 5 years ago. They can also send your items away to be re-plated if they can’t be replaced. I have lots of pieces from them and it has only happened to two items.

oohyoudevilyou · 16/12/2024 07:25

Not keen on plated jewellery as the plating always wears off, but I like the simple retro style. I'd be looking round antique fairs and choose a solid 9ct gold signet rig for that price.

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/12/2024 07:28

Who cares whether it’s ‘tacky’ or not
if you like it wear it with pride

( currently wearing a cheapo ring from SHEIN and I don’t care because I like it )

Gold jewllery is great. Like a pp, I'm not keen on plated as it's normally not quite the right colour tho

sometimesmovingforwards · 16/12/2024 08:40

It’s very expensive for what it is.

louisianachild · 16/12/2024 08:41

Why would yellow gold be tacky? I personally feel it’s the only colour that has not come in and gone out of fashion over the last century

Screamingabdabz · 16/12/2024 08:44

“…it maybe looks a bit tacky to be wearing yellowy gold jewellery.”

Gold. The pure glowing element that has been adorning the human body for millennia…considered ’tacky’??? wtf.

Gagagardener · 16/12/2024 08:55

@AnnoyedAsAllHeck vermeil is a coating. A thin layer (2.5 microns) of gokd over silver.

Printedword · 16/12/2024 09:10

I think it looks classic not tacky. The price is quite high for gold plated.

I’m surprised to hear that people have experienced plating wearing off. The plated items I have are from my late mums costume jewellery and and they are all still ok. Praps things aren’t made as well now

leftorrightnow · 16/12/2024 10:03

Wear what you like and don’t worry what others think! If you like it, then it’s “you”! I wear two gold rings everyday, my wedding ring, which is tiny as custom
made, and a bigger, cheap ring with fake diamonds which was a gift from my famiy
in law and isn’t even fashionable anymore. I love it and they’re my ring ie been wearing daily for 13 years! I also wear small gold earrings of various designs every day.

WorriedRelative · 16/12/2024 10:23

That's a vintage style, if you hunt around pawn shops and second hand jewellery shops you could probably find very similar in solid gold for a similar price.

There's nothing wrong with yellow gold, but if you buy plated or vermeil it will wear off.

oakleaffy · 16/12/2024 11:07

@unfold1
Plating will wear off fast on a ring that gets a lot of use.
The colour of 18 k gold looks wonderful on warm toned skin- my only concern would be the gold plate wearing off.

( same as with white gold- it’s a plating over gold)

A friend has a diamond ring that literally made me 😳!
I’d never noticed it before, but we were indoors and it was flashing fire under lights in a restaurant- ( Normally we meet outdoors)
It was a Carat, Inherited from a relative.

A good diamond is a beautiful thing with the lively sparkle they have.

I would love to wear pure gold, but 24K gold is quite expensive, as is platnium. Between the two, I love platnium, as I did have a ring once that was 18K but was soft and thin band so it bent easily.

Yes 9 carat gold is less soft than 18 carat gold. My engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity ring are all platinum but I have a lot of 9 carat yellow gold rings with gemstones I love to wear and many are pre-owned.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 16/12/2024 14:29

It is not remotely tacky.

As someone who loves antique jewellery, I would say you could get a very similar Victorian ring but in 9 carat gold for a little bit more money.

The Monica Vinader however is a lovely, timeless ring. Buy it and enjoy.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/12/2024 14:43

It isn't my taste and it isn't gold. If it is your taste, nothing wrong with yellow gold but I would venture you could find something similar second hand and made from 9ct gold.

When I got engaged the jeweller from whom we bought the engagement ring said that 18ct would not wear more quickly providing the ring(s) alongside it were also 18ct. Theory has held for 35 years!

BasiliskStare · 15/12/2024 22:26

@SereneCapybara - That's interesting - I think some of her jewellery is pretty but I do worry about the vermeil wearing off.

If you buy directly with Monica Vinader, you have a 5 year warranty, if any vermeil wears off they will repair, replace or refund.Same with all their jewellery.Bought some lovely bangles, rings, from there, never had a problem.

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 16/12/2024 15:15

I'm not a fan of gold - I prefer silver or rose gold but I have very pale colouring with blonde hair. My wedding and engagement rings are gold because that was the 'thing' at the time.

I think yellow gold has really come back into fashion in the last couple of years.

I was in Rome recently and noticed the women pretty universally wear gold, usually several very fine chained pendants, rings etc. It really suits their colouring though. Sounds like it will suit yours too.

Tarraleah · 16/12/2024 15:40

the only people who ever claimed gold was tacky were "influencers" or influencees (is that a word?) who needed to justify their grey/silver/white gold obsession.

No, it's not tacky. If you like it, wear it.

And frankly, even if it WAS tacky? So what? A tacky ring doesn't make you a tacky person, life is too short to worry about what narrow-minded ignorant people think.

Astrabees · 16/12/2024 16:26

It is quite a plain style but ludicrously expensive for gold plated base metal, a real rip off.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 16/12/2024 16:34

I don't like signet rings in general but if I did, I would wear the metal I preferred (silver in my case but for some people it's gold) and not worry about it. They both have very long traditions behind them, and from your description it sounds as if gold would suit your colouring well.

LadyPoison · 16/12/2024 17:08

It’s expensive costume jewellery.

Nothing wrong with yellow gold, I have a warm skin tone and it suits me but this is just gold plated silver. It will inevitably wear off. If you are happy to just enjoy it for a while then that’s great. If you want a ring you can wear frequently and enjoy for years then look elsewhere

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 16/12/2024 20:36

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 15/12/2024 22:49

Huh? How is yellow gold tacky? I myself find platinum weird - like how do you know if it’s silver or not?

Edited

Exactly. This angst about what precious or semi precious metal it's acceptable wear is another only on MN thing.

Re the ring, it's not tacky. It's not my style and I wouldn't buy plated gold. If my budget didn't stretch to gold I'd happily wear silver (and as you say I can't tell the difference between silver and platinum)

Oh and I've never once in the decades I've been wearing gold, silver or platinum thought "does it suit my colouring" or thought that about anyone else.

SereneCapybara · 16/12/2024 23:43

WalterdelaMare · 15/12/2024 22:51

Not my taste, but a completely inoffensive ring.

I have loads of MV jewellery including rings - always admired.

Does yours last? Does the vermeil stay on?
