Does this ring look cheap / tacky

unfold1 · 15/12/2024 21:36

I rarely wear jewellery but trying to change that, as always admire others ‘everyday’ / signature jewellery.

During their BF sale I picked up this Monica vinader ring as I loved the look of it on the model, but worry it maybe looks a bit tacky to be wearing yellowy gold jewellery. Opinions please?

if it’s of any relevance I have dark skin (warm toned) so guidance is to wear gold jewellery. However whenever I look around silver is far more common for ‘everyday’ looks

Yellow gold is on trend now rather than the ubiquitous platinum (if you care about fashions!). But fashion changes all the time, get what you love.

@WearyAuldWumman and @wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting

Dear WearyAuld - I bet you are not as weary or old as I am but I do agree yellow gold stands the test of time. & There other fashions - when I was younger fashion seemed to say platinum - but to be honest my engagement and wedding rings are what I had - and whilst when younger I might have thought - Oh out of fashion - now I simply do not care . I think yellow gold suits me better but after 30 years or so - I care more about them being what I had at the time and still going strong. I hope you still love your rings Wigs.

I do disagree though that yellow gold is tacky - Choose it , don't choose it but over time I think it is classic. Each to their own.

I think it's lovely op, I've always liked that style. Very classic and a little romantic.

I sent off for some of this jewellery last year. I was surprised at how tacky and flimsy it was so sent it back. I'd rather go for good quality or cheaper jewellery that's better quality than this. It's awful.

CluelessAsFuck · 19/12/2024 18:43

Love it

exaltedwombat · 19/12/2024 20:14

Jewellery is MEANT to look cheap and tacky. Bling is the only excuse for carrying money around on your body. Expensive is obscene. At best it's ostentatious consumption. At worst, it indicates you're for sale.

JuliaSmith · 20/12/2024 09:08

MV is overpriced.

I've made jewellery on a small scale and knowing the price of the silver/ stones etc from suppliers, MV is a complete rip off.

In the USA, a ring marked 18K means that the ring is 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other metals. 24K is pure gold, 18K will be mixed, 14K mixed more, etc. But it does not mean that it is vermeil over sterling. FFS!🙄

What Are the Markings for 18-Karat Gold?

This particular Monica Vinader ring is described on their website as "18k Gold Vermeil" I think the prev poster was trying to point out that this particular item is a) plated and b) not using a vey pure alloy for that plating, and therefore steer OP towards something that will last a bit longer, but maybe didn't phrase it that clearly.

LittleBalletBum · 20/12/2024 14:30

I have this ring! I wear it nearly every day and often get compliments on it. Bloody love a bit of Monica Vinader

muggletops · 20/12/2024 15:02

I like MV stuff but it is overpriced, but so it pandora and Swarovski. I have some MV jewelry and my friend bought me a small bracelet chain in July 2023 and I haven't taken it off since she help me put it on! still looks the same colour.

WhereAreWeNow · 20/12/2024 19:09

I like it OP. I love MV. I agree it's overpriced for plate but it's a decent plating that seems to last well and they have good sales.

tarheelbaby · 20/12/2024 19:14

As a long time jewelry lover, I see this ring as a clever combo of two vintage styles: a signet ring + star cut. Google 'gypsy star ring' to see what I mean.

If you are just wanting a 'fun' ring that you wear for a while, go for it. My younger colleagues love MV and also Sean Lane (much more edgy, collab with McQueen, claws, thorns)

Personally, I'd pay extra for a ring made of 9k or 10K gold (or more) and the internet is heaving with them. You could easily find a similar or more exciting ring.

IME, 'named jewelry' is overpriced b/c you're buying the name. With Tiffany or Cartier, Dior or Chanel, the mark-up is insane but maintains its mark-up value. Sadly, I doubt anyone will have heard of MV in 5 to 10 years and a vermeil ring will have no intrinsic value but a 9 or 10K ring will. Likewise, sterling (925) jewellry holds its value.

Jabbabong · 20/12/2024 19:20

I like it.

I feel, personally, they will have the rep like Pandora within a few years.

I love Shaun Leane - if I'm not wearing my own work, I'm normally wearing some of his!

Thanks all, didn’t expect so many responses. As a jewellery newbie, I’ve learnt a lot! 😊

I do agree MV is quite overpriced, I paid BF sale price thankfully

If you love it, wear it. Why are you bothered by what anyone else thinks, who told your their options were better than yours? You are a unique individual with your own tastes . Only you know what’s best for you.

Sorrynotsorry22 · 22/12/2024 09:38

Every 1970s 6 year old worth her missing front teeth had this ring in silver 😄😄😄
Very coverable!

Emanresu52 · 22/12/2024 14:06

I love it and want one too now!

unfold1 · 22/12/2024 14:24

@tarheelbaby @LadyPoison My first time hearing about Shaun Leane, and wow really like his jewellery!

Huh? How is yellow gold tacky? I myself find platinum weird - like how do you know if it’s silver or not?

Edited

Platinum is duller than silver.

Blipette · 26/12/2024 19:32

It actually reminds me a bit of the rings I had when I was a younger. I quite like it 🥰

very classic i remember my friend having a ring very much like that in the early 90s.
Why is the majority of gold jewellery vermeil these days which I'm sure is silver with gold plating. it will tarnish eventually as the thin layer of gold wears away. it's seems most high street jewels sell this now and not much solid gold which is a shame. although I know gold is mega expensive these days.

The reason the majority of affordable jewellery is vermeil or plated is because of the gold price which at $2634 an ounce is near an all time high. It’s risen hugely since the start of the war in Ukraine and it is unlikely to come down any time soon. (Rhodium the world’s most expensive metal and used in all white gold pieces is $4850 an ounce). There’s a huge amount of ignorance on this thread about the value of precious metal jewellery and what you can buy for £100. You would really struggle to get a 9 carat gold ring these days for this price, let along 14 carat (European preference) or 18 carat (750 parts of pure gold per thousand and exactly double the price of 9 carat). Many jewellery brands are now gold plating brass because of the price of precious metal. (See Missoma etc) MV is a good, reliable brand. I wouldn’t call in costume jewellery. There is a legal definition of Vermeil in the USA (no legal definition in the UK) which is a minimum of 2.5 microns of 10 carat gold over sterling silver. Most brands selling into the USA will ensure the gold content is higher than this to comply with the law. And 2.5 microns is not a thin layer of gold. That would be flash plating at 0.25 microns. Rings will wear more readily than any other jewellery type (because of the amount of work your hands do) but it’s still a great buy. It will be around for centuries. Jewellery is the only thing to come out of an archaeological dig after millennia and still be wearable today. I hope you buy the ring or something similar and enjoy it. It’s likely to be much reduced in the January sales.

JazzieC · 27/12/2024 01:07

I love the ring but wouldn't go for vermeil plating. I was given a lovely MV plated ring several years ago and it wore off very quickly. Have a look on Etsy, there are some lovely unique gold rings there

sausagepastapot · 27/12/2024 09:35

Personally I love it, but you do you and get what you want anyway!!!
