Happy new year, BTW. 🎉

Oh that is lucky! That could come in very handy!

I think that is their 'Contract with the public' which is more or less the same as their manifesto, and can be found quite easily if you Google.

That doesn't actually mention a French style health system which I definitely remember reading back in June and on old news reports Farage is quoted as talking about this.

DuncinToffee · 01/01/2025 22:39

It's not really surprising that 'be more like France' didn't make the manifesto

Oh, sorry. Happy new year to you all, Starmeristas or those of other Labour flavours!

And, away from politics…derxa, I do hope your husband recovers very soon.

Happy new year, Starmeristas.

Can't work out whether this is rude or pathetic, so I'm going to go with both. Why not just leave it at Happy New Year?

It’s both, it’s also intended to be provocative and I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m not going to give the satisfaction of engaging.

I'm going to continue to ignore the annoying buzzing in the room quite honestly.

Rummly · 02/01/2025 05:58

Jeez.

BIWI · 02/01/2025 06:22

Jeez?

Well @Rummly if you didn't post in the way that you do - sneering and snarking - you might not get that kind of response.

<goes back to ignoring>

Never here with good intentions

The tiniest smidgeon of attention - positive or negative - acts as encouragement

Ignore ignore ignore - every time

Alexandra2001 · 02/01/2025 08:54

European health care schemes, are still mainly tax payer funded and but place more financial burden on employers, than we do.
So how does that play out with the "tax on jobs" brigade, following a small increase in NI for business?

Should we ever change to one of these schemes, it does not train or retain a single HCP.... which takes years.

We need to reduce demand, Obesity is up 4 fold in a decade, weight loss treatments to cost 28 billion, a 1/5 of the NHS budget alone.

That's true. I guess I just can't get my head around coming on a board just to sneer. It really isn't in the spirit of these threads. Season of good will and all that.

Never mind, onward and upward, go and see Nosferatu, it's brilliant.

I agree about reducing demand. Though I can imagine making it more difficult to have fatty foods such as takeaways would not go down well with many people, who would view it almost as infringing their human rights.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2025 10:09

While we still have so many living in poverty and such huge equality gaps then we cannot solve ailing health. The two are intrinsically linked.

Interestingly, a lot that I have read on Denmark suggests Danish people's health isn't actually very good (highest rate of teen binge drinking, for example) and this is in quite large part down to the fact that they have such faith in their excellent health care systems to sort them out.

cardibach · 02/01/2025 10:16

While takeaways tend to unhealthiness and high calorific values, fat isn’t as much of an issue as sugar and UPFs, @LlynTegid

Sounds like foreign interference in a democracy to me.

cardibach · 02/01/2025 10:54

When is somebody going to deal with his nonsense? What can even be done?

It's not a plot you would see in a James Bond film, is it..

I would hope that ALL leaders of UK political parties would condemn this sort of behaviour.

cardibach · 02/01/2025 10:58

You would like to think so @cakeorwine . Not holding my breath for Badenoch or Farage though.

DuncinToffee · 02/01/2025 11:09

Farage wants his money and Badenoch has already stated she is a "huge fan" of this "fantastic" man

Suella Braverman has just told LBC listeners that not only has Italy built a wall on "its border with Turkey" but that she has been there "and seen it.".
Her husband deleted his tweet promoting Reform membership as a great NY present

Apparently Nigel Farage has blasted Musk as an "interfering foreign presence in UK politics who should stay out."

The architect of the UKs successful vote to leave the UK pointed out that the campaign had been run on a platform of national sovereignty and demonstrated that the UK clearly rejected unelected foreign figures making decisions in the UK."

.... is the tack the press should take. I can personally promise them it would sell a fucktonne more advertising space than their current craven acceptance.

SerendipityJane · 02/01/2025 11:18

Interesting discoveries for 2025 - starting to reframe what "immigration" means. I'm guessing the Roman conquest pushed a load of people north and eventually overseas and when the Empire collapsed, they started to return (whether they knew it or not).
