Which brand of tinned tomatoes do you use?

I always used to buy Napolina for making pizza and pasta sauces and beef ragus and was always very happy with them. There seem to be more brands about now. Today I've bought a few tins of Mutti peeled Plum and chopped tomatoes with garlic. I don't remember using them before. I'll be making the Plum tomatoes into an uncooked pizza sauce, hopefully with minimal extra ingredients.

I don't buy TT that often so for me it makes sense to buy the best I can afford, provided price matches quality. I realise not everyone is able to do so.

Any brand that doesn't use modern slavery is worth looking at.

Is there any way of checking this at the point of purchase?

Mutti or Cerio

Depends what I am making. If it's something very tomato-based and rich I'll use Mutti or Napolina, whatever is on offer.

If the tomatoes are not a crucial element of the recipe, I'll use shops own.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 02/12/2024 14:07

the cheapest on the shelf

TheTecknician · 02/12/2024 14:08

I've read an article about Mutti today. If I've understood it correctly they only buy tomatoes from farms that are totally mechanised, which I guess is particularly important at harvest time. Hand-picking under the Italian sun would be quite onerous.

Mutti and I buy them from Amazon in packs of 6. They are £5.70 for 6 cans.

StormingNorman · 02/12/2024 14:11

Mufti and Cirio. Mufti are a softer flavour and Cirio more acidic.

They take turns being on offer in Waitrose so I just buy whichever has money off.

caffelattetogo · 02/12/2024 14:11

Sam Marzano I think they're called. Really good.

caffelattetogo · 02/12/2024 14:11

San

SuperGinger · 02/12/2024 14:13

Mutti or Waitrose own brand

I like Mutti. I find them quite rich and tasty

On offer inAsda atm

Crikeyalmighty · 02/12/2024 14:14

Mutti if they are an integral part of recipe- otherwise cirio

BigDahliaFan · 02/12/2024 14:16

The mutti cherry tomatoes are fantastic. If you need them for a proper feature in a dish.

If I'm slow cooking a stew I use whatever brand.

CoastalCalm · 02/12/2024 14:17

Cirio or the Lidl cherry ones

SharpOpalNewt · 02/12/2024 14:18

I don't use any most of the time, I buy fresh tomatoes and supermarket own brand passata (if any).

The tomatoes are grown on the Isle of Wight or in Kent.

I think if it says the tomatoes are grown in Italy then I'm entitled to assume that's true as a consumer and should not have to conduct investigations as to whether they are in fact grown in China and have been picked by slaves.

Coincidentally, I just read a lengthy article on tomato purees and the use of Chinese tomatoes from forced labour camps, which was actually quite interesting if you want a tomato deep-dive...

Yes I had seen that - very disturbing. Makes you realise that the food chain cannot be trusted.

Same here although I tried Tesco's once and was really quite impressed. Don't have Tesco nearby though!

DH is the tomato user in our household. He swears by Cirio ( chopped not peeled).

Soupwithstring · 02/12/2024 14:47

Polpa in Lidl are an exact copy of Mutti.

Still available where I live.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 02/12/2024 14:50

Mutti, always 😋

littleducks · 02/12/2024 13:46

Lidl "polpa" and cherry tomatoes are good
I really like mutti but find them to expensive for everyday use

I was about to say those too. The Lidl "Deluxe" tomato tins are excellent.

Goldpanther · 02/12/2024 14:52

Another vote for Mutti.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2024 14:55

I use whatever DH has bought - he does the shopping. I can't say I've ever noticed a significant difference by the time they're cooked,
But I don't think we've tried Mutti,

Elley123 · 02/12/2024 14:57

I must admit I don't get the love for Mutti., although I know lots of people rate them highly. I tried them once and didn't think they were as good as HEINZ . Back up would be Cirio or Napolina.
