Which brand of tinned tomatoes do you use?

I always used to buy Napolina for making pizza and pasta sauces and beef ragus and was always very happy with them. There seem to be more brands about now. Today I've bought a few tins of Mutti peeled Plum and chopped tomatoes with garlic. I don't remember using them before. I'll be making the Plum tomatoes into an uncooked pizza sauce, hopefully with minimal extra ingredients.

I regret reading this thread, I’ve read the word Mutti so much it’s not even registering as a word anymore, my brain is fried and I just want everyone to stop saying Mutti. In spite of all that, definitely Mutti, the best I’ve ever had, never going back to another brand!

😂😂😂😂

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 02/12/2024 20:43

Mutti from Ocado, as I stock up when on offer. More expensive but worth it.

Only Mutti now. I used to think tinned tomatoes were tinned tomatoes but no. A huge difference in quality and taste.

I used to think the same, but you are right.

Mutti

AdoraBell · 02/12/2024 22:09

I prefer Mutti, years ago I used to buy Cirio, when we lived in Latin America- I don’t know if that makes a difference- but I find them more acidic now.

tinydynamine · 02/12/2024 22:26

I use Mutti now, always. I also learned many years ago to avoid tinned tomatoes with added citric acid.

It is quite a co-incidence isn't it. On the day that Mutti are reported as using Chinese tomatoes from forced labor camps in their "Italian" chopped tomatoes, a poster pops up enthralling the virtues of Mutti tomatoes.

So much of a co-incidence it is almost hard to believe.

I thought you were making this up, but I'm not so sure any more. It's like robots posting. Probably not, but its a little odd the huge brand support for a brand that possibly 3 years ago wasnt that well known in the UK. I've bought the product so I know it is real, but am questioning now all these likes.

My response is genuine.

My response is real too, but it was my favourite, but I will now dig deeper into the product's origins. Sometimes a brand is that good but whether I continue to purchase being sold a dubious provenance is something else.

BlackChunkyBoots · 03/12/2024 07:18

Mutti are good but pricey. Napolina are too much to justify now. I use Sainsbury's own brand.

TheTecknician · 05/12/2024 15:33

This afternoon I have transformed two tins of Mutti peeled Plum tomatoes (not entirely peeled, I removed some skin) into an uncooked pizza sauce. I think it might be too liquid but I'll try it first before reducing it in a pan.

Genuinely whatever is the very cheapest brand at whichever supermarket I’m at (usually about £0.20p- £0.39p)
I usually cook it down for ages with my own garlic/herbs etc.

There definitely is a difference in quality I will agree (unlike things like baked beans that I think the cheap ones are just as good!) but for the price difference and the amount/frequency we use them and we’re on such a tight budget I just can’t afford the more expensive ones.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 05/12/2024 15:49

Mutti Polpa for sauces (especially things like cacciatore)
Love the ketchup too.
My friend swears by their pizza sauce.
The passata however is no better than any supermarket brand in our opinion.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 05/12/2024 16:02

Mutti polpa here also for sauces. I still buy Napolina but only plum tomatoes as there started to be too much skin and stalk in the chopped.

marplemead · 05/12/2024 16:15

I'm real and have been converted to Mutti for years now. I bulk buy on offer and find it really makes a difference to lots of everyday meals like pizza sauce, lasagne, tomato pasta bake, tomato soup etc I can usually whip up a quick dinner if I have a tin in the cupboard without having to add lots of other ingredients to bring out the flavour of the tomatoes.

JBJ · 05/12/2024 16:22

Mutti. Particularly like their finely chopped tomatoes in sauces instead of passata as they're just nicer and give more body to the sauce.

nokidshere · 05/12/2024 16:26

My favourite tinned tomatoes are growers Fayre from Tesco, one of the cheapest.

orangeblosssom · 05/12/2024 16:36

Mutti

TENSsion · 05/12/2024 16:44

I was sent mutti in a Gousto box a couple of years ago… we only buy mutti now.

leafybrew · 05/12/2024 16:52

Aldi

Coffeecakelatte · 05/12/2024 16:58

I hate chopped, as they have an unpredictable amount of stalks in. I use plum tomatoes only for that reason. I like it when the juice is thicker and not watery. I have found Asda's own brand really good. Lidl's are hit and miss. I was disappointed with napolina both in texture and taste; they survive on their brand history like a lot of items. I used to really like Ciro, although I haven't tried these in awhile.

Tealeavesinthecup · 05/12/2024 16:58

Mutti is the only brand I’m aware of that doesn’t contain citric acid.

Drain juice first, blend, then add your herbs, garlic and seasoning, and tomato puree. Job done.

NetDesMamans1 · 05/12/2024 17:03

Sainsbury's own, peeled plum tomatoes. The juice is rich and unctuous.

Goatblu · 05/12/2024 17:09

Mutti. The polpa ones as I don't like there being any stalks.
