What's your life stage at 40.

It's a mad age really I think. Some could have a 22 year old. Some might have a newborn. Some are happy childless. Some could still be trying.

I'm 40 with a 12 and 14 year old.
Married 10 years. Together 18.
Never had a career.

At 40 I got married and had my first (and only) child.

ToThineOwnSelf · 01/12/2024 21:34

Single, childless and unemployed :( not what I’d hoped for

Crushed23 · 01/12/2024 21:35

I'm 35 but I feel 40 tbh.

My life stage is single, child-free. Just emigrated from the UK. Ready for a new adventure.

I'm a fitness fanatic and feel fitter and healthier than I did in my 20s.

mynameiscalypso · 01/12/2024 21:39

I'm (just) 41. I have a 5 year old son and no desire for any more. I'm quite laser focused on my career at the moment. I do have a number of chronic illnesses which cause a lot of pain and fatigue and mean I get ill a lot but overall, my life is pretty good.

AlexandraPeppernose · 01/12/2024 21:40

I was married to husband no 2 with 3 kids-16, 15 and 10 and renting. My 30's were really tough for various reasons.

I'm now 45, have a whopping mortgage, have tons of freedom, progressing in my career and loving every minute of it.

I bloody love my 40's

Itgetsharder · 01/12/2024 21:42

30 next year. Separated…soon to be divorced . 2 dc ages 11 and 9. Renting. Good career.

Itgetsharder · 01/12/2024 21:42

I mean 40 next year

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 01/12/2024 21:43

Just turned 44. Part-time primary teacher. Second marriage. 3 kids - 17, 14 and 4.
So one is learning to drive whist one is learning to read! It's all good fun!
Love my family, don't love my job.
Still renting (privately).

babyproblems · 01/12/2024 21:49

37 so not far off. Half way through house renovation, and about to finish renovation on a rental property. One DS who is 3. Married for 8 years, together for 15. Not got solid career, took redundancy after returning from Mat leave. Retraining (slowly) planning on going into a new field. Pretty ok financially. Generally good health although would like to drop a dress size and currently have awful cold/sore throat!!

Katesam2016 · 01/12/2024 21:50

I’m 40 in a few weeks.
i have been married for 10 years next year, we have a 7 year old dd.
we are finding life quite hard, we are in debt…..not massively but enough…. we just can’t get out of it and we both work full time! Hopefully 2025 is the year we sort it.

mummyof2boys30 · 01/12/2024 21:51

40 next year
Will have a 15 year old and a 13 year old. Married 17 years.
My brother on the other hand is 41 with a 7 year old and a newborn

eakjoy · 01/12/2024 21:53

I know what you mean OP, I am nearing late 30s and mine are similar ages to yours, it is mind boggling to me friends and family similar ages having babies now and what that must feel like (probably not as boggled as they were when we had ours early 20s 😂😂) such a life defining thing isn't it, such different lives we live. DH and I are both career oriented, financially comfortable now, enjoying the teen years (yes I said that!) and excited for the next stage too.

Mrscharlieeeee · 01/12/2024 21:53

41, been married 15 years, DC are 10 and 7. I'm enjoying this stage of life, kids are great company and still at an age where they want to do things with us but the sleepness nights and toddler tantrums are well behind us.

ThatRubyGoose · 01/12/2024 21:53

35, 15yr old DD, DP, incredible home, awesome career, hoping to marry DP next year, the best dogs in the world

CarrotPencil · 01/12/2024 21:56

I’m 35 too but most of my friends have turned 40 this year weirdly! It feels scary because only 20 short years ago you were 20, and in 20 more you’ll be 60 and you know they’ll go in a flash!

Anything could happen in the next 5 years I guess, but I will have a 7, 12 and 14 year old 😲 DH and I will be married 18 years which sounds ridiculous. Will only have 5 years of career behind me though.

woffley · 01/12/2024 21:57

I'd been with DH 21 years by then, child free. On my 40th birthday I had a new baby and it was the start of a whole new phase of life. Look

TammyBundleballs · 01/12/2024 21:57

46 been with DH for about 20 years and have a 3 year old DS.

I have a very high paying job. No mortgage or other debt and plenty invested for the future. Looking to retire in the next 5 years or so.

toycat · 01/12/2024 21:57

40 with an 8 year old and 19 year relationship. Small mortgage remaining. 30s have been very tough with lots of family loss. Now some stability so trying to get a better job as am stuck doing admin - long outgrown a job but it's very flexible and not stressful. Lots of interviews but not quite there!

Tuhlula · 01/12/2024 21:59

I'm 39. Kids are 9 and 5. Mid divorce. Very rewarding job, work for myself but would like to earn £20,000 per year more.

Have you tried Dave Ramsey? Google his baby steps. I started in July and while I’m still in debt, it’s significantly less than it was and I have a timeline to sort it out.

Honestly, took until I was 40+ to be able to even think about financial stuff in a better way!

Santasbigredbobblehat · 01/12/2024 22:00

Married with 3 children at primary school, I work as a teacher, own a house in London. Feel happy with my lot.

moonlight1705 · 01/12/2024 22:00

Just turned 40 and I have a 6 year old DD and been with DH for 11 years.

Mortgage on the house for the next 10 years assuming nothing major happens in life between now and then.

Just started a new career in the civil service and going to work my way up hopefully rather than being stuck in a low paid but fun charity job.

MothToAnInferno · 01/12/2024 22:02

I'll be 40 in a couple of years. I'll have a 19yo and a 17yo. I will have been with dh for 23 years, married for 15. The past few years have been great for me with the kids being older now. I'm the fittest I've ever been, I've moved my career to something I really love and I have the time and head space to focus on it. Dh and I are enjoying the extra time we have together with the kids being older, being able to go out for dates etc. I have lots I'm looking forward to in my 40s when the kids are grown.

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/12/2024 22:02

I’m 51. On my 40th birthday I was unhappily married, jobless & severely depressed. Turning 40 was the jolt I needed to do something about it.

By 41 I was single, working & renting a room. Now I have a flat of my own, a career, a cat 😻 & a busy social life, & I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.

I was never interested in having kids.

coxesorangepippin · 01/12/2024 22:03

I'm 42 with an almost 8 and almost 11 year old
