I’ve heard good things so far. What do you guys reckon to it?

I won’t watch it as the interviews with Ariana Grande and the other girl make me want to cringe to death.

That seems a shame if it really is the only reason...you might not find them appealing in interviews but they're talented actresses and singers and they're playing their characters in the film.

I wouldn't go to it anyway but that interview is INSANE and part of me thinks it must be a spoof.

BeretInParis · 28/11/2024 13:27

My DD9 wanted to see it so I took her over the weekend. I'm not a fan of musicals generally. The breaking into song thing throws me out of the emotion / plot - even though I know that's the opposite of the intention.

However, it was excellent. I didn't think the score was great but the sets, costuming, make up, acting, choreography, cinematography, etc were all fantastic. And I enjoyed the cameos immensely. I'd recommend it as a visual feast!

Rocksaltrita · 28/11/2024 13:43

It was ok for a kids’ movie but Gelinda’s character was just awful, vacuous… What kind of a message are we trying to send to our DDs? That you need a man in shining armour to rescue you? That being a different colour isn’t good enough? I thought a lot of the messaging was off and was miffed it was half a story! It was also very long for half a story… No idea about the cameo being referred to here.

I don't follow. Glinda starts off shallow and starts developing some depth as she befriends Elphaba, although ultimately she's not strong enough to take off alone under a cloud. Wizard of Oz wouldn't follow if she were. And the whole point about Elphaba is that she's been unfairly victimised for the colour of her skin. You're not supposed to approve!

Do all female characters have to be morally perfect with no love interest?

Needmorelego · 28/11/2024 14:00

@Rocksaltrita I don't really think we are meant to like Glinda at first l. She thinks she's the "it girl" and queen bee but really most of the other students are rolling the eyes at her and tolerate her.
Fiyero is mostly a bit dim and doesn't really care who he gets with. She throws herself at him but he's all "yeah ok.... whatever".

DanielaDressen · 28/11/2024 15:00

I think Fieryo does care who he gets with. He’s more interested in Elphelba than Glinda as he realises what a nice person she is and he isn’t bothered about her being green. Which i think is a good message. Glinda is awful at first but becomes a better person and realises once she gets to know Elpheba that she likes her.

This made me properly laugh, how can you know the storylines 'didn't go anywhere' if you literally left half way through

😂

Also, if that poster left halfway through then they actually left a quarter of the way through because it’s the first half of a two parter!

Needmorelego · 28/11/2024 15:04

@DanielaDressen yes that's true although
at first he just flirts with everyone. Even the librarian 😂

I was cracking up thinking of this earlier today. Just too funny!

Garnetcherrycola · 28/11/2024 19:23

I absolutely loved it. Best film I've seen in years. I feel like going again 😅

IDontDrinkTea · 28/11/2024 19:32

This is just a PSA for those who have commented saying their children enjoyed it… Do NOT be tempted to buy them the book for Christmas. It might have the movie poster as the cover, but that’s where the similarity ends, the book is very much an adult-only book and is very very explicit 😳 (I suspect if I wrote exactly what mumsnet would delete my comment…)

🤣 Yes, this is very true!

I'm curious about those who say the hate and can't stand musicals - I'm curious. What exactly do you hate about them?
Telling stories through song is a very old method - think of travelling minstrels of the middle ages.
I hate horror films but that's because they literally scare me.....but musicals?
What is it about them?

I just don't get it. In my everyday life I don't stop what i'm doing to sing a song about the cute puppy I just saw or the fact that i'm cleaning my house.

Needmorelego · 29/11/2024 14:13

@brokenwand you don't 😂
Seriously though.....films aren't always meant to be realistic. Musicals, fantasy, sci-fi - just a fun way to tell a story.
I can understand people saying they just don't enjoy them - but it's the "can't stand" I don't understand. It seems extreme.
Now....off to sing with the squirrels.

Yes, but neither do you run about with obviously empty suitcases, drink out of obviously empty coffee cups, or see your own past in grainy, home-movie style footage.

mydamnfootstuckinthedoor · 29/11/2024 17:30

What was the surprise? I’ve seen it, and I still don’t know … seemed very predictable to me.

TitaniasAss · 29/11/2024 17:33

I went to see it last night. It's good, lots of talented people in it, but I didn't love it. I wanted to, so was a little disappointed.

betterangels · 29/11/2024 17:41

My worry is that I'll be annoyed that it's too long.

rosalynd34 · 29/11/2024 18:56

I went not expecting much. I like musicals but have never seen wicked. I read mixed reviews and was concerned it was long and only half a story so went in expecting not to love it and was honestly surprised.

Although it was long, it didn't feel long. I thought it was great. I dragged my partner along who doesn't love musicals at all and he said, he would go to the second part as it wasn't bad.

I would definitely watch it again and can't wait for part 2

Just Google "Wicked cameos" and you'll have your answer.

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 29/11/2024 21:37

Loved it. I cannot wait for part 2!

MyNameIsSharon · 30/11/2024 15:47

I don't mind musicals where they just break into the occasional song, like The Greatest Showman I absolutely love that.

I really can't stand musical where it's all singing like Evita. It just starts to get on my nerves a bit at first and then massively gets on my nerves as it goes along. I just want them to shut up.

I think I'll wait to watch this at home as its so long. In case it's too much singing 😆

Really well kept under wraps surprise cameos that Wicked/musical theatre afficionados loved!

To be fair I didn't know the cameos were supposed to be surprises as they are mentioned in at least one review in the mainstream press.
