Reasons you would keep your window wide open in all weather?

With the curtains firmly drawn? All day every day? Other than the obvious: a broken window which is unable to be closed (don’t think this is the case due to the below timing).

Since moving in a few months ago, our neighbour’s adult son keeps his upstairs bedroom window wide open no matter the weather. Freezing cold, sideways rain, doesn’t matter. Window stays wide open. And he’s in there most of the day, I can hear him practicing guitar or talking (he has a deep loud voice).

The only thing I can think of are nefarious reasons, eg that he needs the ventilation to grow cannabis (zero proof of this hence the thread looking for other reasons).

Have you ever smelt a teenage boy’s bedroom?

Could also be a damp/mold issue and they are trying to keep it ventilated.

icelolly12 · 23/11/2024 20:02

Why do you care?

Winter2020 · 23/11/2024 20:02

I remember when I was a teenager a neighbour saying to me "Go upstairs and pull your net curtain in - it has blown outside a little and stuck on the brick". This neighbour told me "other people have commented to me about your curtain..."

I remember thinking why on earth would someone give a shit about their neighbours window or curtain.

Your neighbours son likes his window open- perhaps he likes fresh air or farts a lot. Who cares? Why do you? Do you need to get a hobby?

dreamersdown · 23/11/2024 20:03

It’s way more healthy to keep your windows open all of the time than shut all of the time. Fresh air, air circulation, management of humidity etc.

Finnulafishface · 23/11/2024 20:05

What has it got to do with you?

tigger1001 · 23/11/2024 20:06

You could be my neighbour. We often have windows open upstairs and I will shut mine long before my teens will shut theirs. They don't feel the cod like I do.

DinnaeFashYerself · 23/11/2024 20:06

Cos he prefers it that way?

Winter2020 · 23/11/2024 20:07

...and from what I gather on the tele cannabis needs hot/humid conditions to grow - the opposite of having your window open. You imagination is running wild. He probably just plays guitar in his pants and wants to save his nosy neighbours from seeing him.

DessertQuiche · 23/11/2024 20:08

It’s healthy to keep your window fully open in sideways freezing rain and for your curtains to get drenched in the process? I’m not saying don’t do it, I’m asking why do it.

As for why I care, curiosity. Why post on a thread asking for reasons if you only have something snipey to say back.

Also he isn’t a teenager.

Erm I would ask if you live opposite me because my son does this, but we don't have any neighbours overlooking his room.

Also DH likes the window open all night unless it's raining heavily.

They just like airflow? I am glad DS opens his window because his room is a pit! 😷

icelolly12 · 23/11/2024 20:09

Well none of us are mind readers so how would we know?!

Reif · 23/11/2024 20:12

Having your windows open all year around wouldn’t be helpful for growing weed.

he probably just likes the fresh air but doesn’t want people looking in.

I was thinking more along the lines of a small grow tent you can buy to grow tomatoes (or weed), which stays warm but the room would stink of weed.

But I was looking for reasons other than suspicions like this, which seem to be that he reeks. Or is extremely hardy.

Maybe he's in there completely naked in an improvised ice bath and attempting to calibrate to a colder climate so that he can make a bid to cross the Antarctic in record time in nothing more than a pair of jeans and a t-shirt?

Or, maybe the whole house is just too hot for him and so he keeps his own bedroom window open?

WetBandits · 23/11/2024 20:14

I have my bedroom window ajar most of the time because I like the fresh air and because we have a problem with condensation that having the window open slightly keeps at bay.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not growing drugs in my bedroom.

Something sensible and amusing, not just a cheap snipe for having the audacity to wonder!

I’m hoping it isn’t drug-related. I grew up with a sibling who did this and I hated it so that’s where my mind went.

My bedroom window is open all the time because I'm bloody hot. I doubt he's menopausal though.

Maybe he lives with people who have the heat on too high for him and he cant turn his radiator off. Or he's a smoker. Or he likes fresh air.

Xyz1234567 · 23/11/2024 20:17

Do you live next door to me? Sounds like a text book description of my son. He works full-time, doesn't drink or smoke any kind of substance. He complains bitterly that it is ridiculously hot in our house, hence the window being open.
Why he doesn't open the curtains is a mystery to me (laziness?) and both habits irritate me.
I cope by never setting foot in his room and threatening him with death if he doesn't shut the window in extreme cold. I have also assured him that, if the window should rot or my walls become damaged, he will be footing the repair bill.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/11/2024 20:17

It could be because he smokes. You wouldn't need it open all the time to grow cannabis if you've got a proper system. Plus you'd probably smell it. His room might be gross and stinky and it's his way of minimising it without having to clean properly? I really wouldn't dwell on my neighbours window use tbh.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/11/2024 20:21

Maybe they are practising for the Regional Area Flatulence Heats, having been trumped at last year's unaided 'Windmill Speed Event'?

greencrab · 23/11/2024 20:22

My teen son's window is always wide open.

He doesn't feel the cold, likes fresh air (but not enough to go outside in it) and apparently his gaming console/pc set up provides additional heat

I’m now going to envision this is the case and I live next door to you, which is somehow comforting (sorry if the reverse isn’t true 😆).

Who knows? My neighbour has bubble wrap up at the bedroom window! 🤷🏼‍♀️

K0OLA1D · 23/11/2024 20:26

We have our bathroom window open permanently on the catch and one of our bedroom windows, but wide wide all the time is odd.

We have neighbours over the street the same. Multiple open all weather's, but the heating billowing all the time as well!
