Reasons you would keep your window wide open in all weather?

With the curtains firmly drawn? All day every day? Other than the obvious: a broken window which is unable to be closed (don’t think this is the case due to the below timing).

Since moving in a few months ago, our neighbour’s adult son keeps his upstairs bedroom window wide open no matter the weather. Freezing cold, sideways rain, doesn’t matter. Window stays wide open. And he’s in there most of the day, I can hear him practicing guitar or talking (he has a deep loud voice).

The only thing I can think of are nefarious reasons, eg that he needs the ventilation to grow cannabis (zero proof of this hence the thread looking for other reasons).

I’ll always have at least one window in the house open throughout the day, even in winter, just for some fresh air. Maybe his parents hve the house boiling hot and he can’t stand it. He’d be a fool to have the window wide open if he was growing weed, as other posters have said, it needs to be a very hot environment. Even if he had a tent for it, opening the window would still seem counterproductive, and also wouldn’t really get rid of the smell anyway.

Vaping, smoking …

Ds (17) always has his window open because he prefers to be cold, and the curtains are closed because he's often on his computer, so it's easier dark, but also he leaves for school when it's still dark at this time of year.

Actually most of our windows at the front we tend not to change the curtains much. Dd wfh and the window shines straight onto her computer so they're closed often when she's working; one of the windows is very much a ground floor thoroughfare, so people walking past all the time, and the other one is blinds that tend to stay open.

But I have no idea about our neighbours curtains as I've never bothered to watch that carefully.

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/11/2024 21:02

Have my window opened overnight. Like the fresh air and hearing the owl.

DirlingWhervish · 23/11/2024 21:07

God I hope you're not my neighbour. My ds too has his window open all the time, and so do I! Always have done since childhood. Love fresh air. Plus we live in a new build which is ridiculously hot all year round. I'd be well annoyed if my neighbours were judging it as some nefarious sign of illegality.

NoahsTortoise · 23/11/2024 21:07

When I lived with my parents my bedroom window was open 24/7 too, through all weathers.

I preferred a cooler room and also it was stuffy as I had so much stuff and wasn't very tidy, so I just always kept it open. Nothing sinister!

Thatdarncat44 · 23/11/2024 21:08

If I was really drunk and I needed the cold breeze to keep me alive.

CandyCane5 · 23/11/2024 21:12

Once you get used to having the window open, it doesn't matter what the weather is outside. My bedroom window is open about 3 inches all year round. I hate when I stay in a hotel and the windows don't open. I love the fresh air.

potatocakesinprogress · 23/11/2024 21:18

If he works out or is very sporty, maybe he runs hot. I worked with a guy who was into that kind of thing and just sitting next to him you could literally feel the heat radiating off his body.

I don't have my windows open at all with nuclear threats looming and minus temperatures. Plus I live near a hospital so I'd never sleep from the ambulances.

chocolatemousse3 · 23/11/2024 21:19

Both my husband and I prefer our bedroom window open 24/7 as we sleep better. Our teen daugther does the same, she says she can't stand close windows.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 23/11/2024 21:22

All of our upstairs windows are currently open.

Fresh air, innit?

I open the back door during the daylight hours too.

TheBigSalami · 23/11/2024 21:23

We have all our upstairs windows open about 45 degrees all year round. Reason? No other background ventilation, hate lack of air changes and stuffy bedrooms. I maintain that the reason we never get colds is because we sleep in well ventilated bedrooms that aren’t heated.

stargazerlil · 23/11/2024 21:23

Maybe it’s autophagy.
I think pot needs warmth to grow, not cold air.

DessertQuiche · 23/11/2024 20:16

I’m hoping it isn’t drug-related. I grew up with a sibling who did this and I hated it so that’s where my mind went.

Not everyone is like your sibling.

I was thinking more along the lines of a small grow tent you can buy to grow tomatoes (or weed), which stays warm but the room would stink of weed.

But I was looking for reasons other than suspicions like this, which seem to be that he reeks. Or is extremely hardy.

You have obviously never grown weed. My brother used to, on the window sill of his (closed) bedroom window, and when he was away my dad watered them (not knowing what they were). My brother never used - he was just curious about whether he could grow them.

And you need to mind your own business.

Motherofdragons20 · 23/11/2024 21:29

I used to always leave my window open a smidge when I lived with my parents (with the heating on) I like the fresh air. To be honest I don’t do it now I’m the one paying the heating bills!

Efacsen · 23/11/2024 21:33

We have neighbours who do this too

Wide open all weathers - sodden curtains flapping against the outside walls and incl this week when it's been minus 4 or 5

We like the window open for ventilation/fresh air - this is on a totally different scale and in fact I'd worry about falling out of the window

No idea why - not teenagers younger adults renting

thrifty24 · 23/11/2024 21:40

34 year old here, keep mine open year round, love going to bed in a cold room and getting snug under my duvet. Some of us are hot sleepers, some of us love a fresh, clean house, leaving windows open does not make us druggies Hmm i genuinely think some folk on here are unhinged

StormingNorman · 23/11/2024 21:44

I like fresh air. It’s healthy. I close the window if the rain’s coming in though.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 23/11/2024 21:47

Our bedroom window is open most of the time including through the winter. We sleep better with fresh air. Bathroom window is also open a lot. I don't understand why you find it so unusual.

MrsMitford3 · 23/11/2024 21:47

My bedroom window is wide open.

I love the feeling of fresh air, love a crisp cold bedroom and piles of duvets and blankets.

It is much healthier to not sleep in a hot room.

Mine is always open-never ever close it. Assume neighbours are fine with it.

Wonderi · 23/11/2024 21:49

You have a very vivid imagination!!

I only keep mine closed on very cold days because I like the fresh air and love a chilly room to sleep in.

I also lived in a home with windows that didn’t open which made me feel very claustrophobic and so when I moved, the first thing I did was open the windows.

There’s nothing like fresh air.

Aliceinunderland · 23/11/2024 22:04

Oh for a minute I wondered if you were my neighbour! My bedroom windows are always open regardless of the weather. I simply cannot sleep without fresh, cool air. I never open my curtains to prevent sunlight coming in. I don't know why I'm like this but I can promise you it's nothing sinister.

SummerFeverVenice · 23/11/2024 22:15

My DD is like this. She runs hot. She was that child who played in the snow in a T-shirt while other mums tutted at me. Then she was getting detentions for taking off her blazer & jumper in school and refusing to be “boiling hot”.

She always has her bedroom window open 24/7, 365 days a year.

Foxlover46 · 23/11/2024 22:21

I'm the same although not wide open but all year round I like the windows open even just a bit , also when I get in the car always have to have the window on my side open even slightly
