Reasons you would keep your window wide open in all weather?

With the curtains firmly drawn? All day every day? Other than the obvious: a broken window which is unable to be closed (don’t think this is the case due to the below timing).

Since moving in a few months ago, our neighbour’s adult son keeps his upstairs bedroom window wide open no matter the weather. Freezing cold, sideways rain, doesn’t matter. Window stays wide open. And he’s in there most of the day, I can hear him practicing guitar or talking (he has a deep loud voice).

The only thing I can think of are nefarious reasons, eg that he needs the ventilation to grow cannabis (zero proof of this hence the thread looking for other reasons).

I thought you might be my neighbour! DA has his window open all day and night - and I don’t mind - he also like to be warm in bed with fresh air and always has .the curtains are closed because he can’t be bothered to open them!

No drugs here either. Sorry to disappoint.

Teenagerantruns · 23/11/2024 22:24

I have my bedroom window open all night and day, love to warm under my duvet with fresh air, funnily when we were driving away from flats today l realised our window was only one open

My teen son's window is always wide open.

He doesn't feel the cold, likes fresh air (but not enough to go outside in it) and apparently his gaming console/pc set up provides additional heat

You could feel the heat radiating off My old tv and console 😂. I'd say more than likely gaming and someone has the heating on turning his room into a sweat box. I also had my windows wide open even when snowing.

HongKongFinish · 23/11/2024 22:32

My neighbour also thinks we are weird for having open windows upstairs all year round, she knocked on our door to ask what was going on.
We just like fresh air, that's all.

Waffle19 · 23/11/2024 22:33

I always keep mine open. They’re open right now in the storm, I just love fresh air and would always rather be cold. I know that makes me sound odd!!

Often have the curtains closed too because our house is overlooked and we have no blinds so don’t want people to see me getting dressed!

Edingril · 23/11/2024 22:33

I do this, not all day but yes regardless of the weather the place gets aired and no last time I checked i am not running a WFH crime syndicate

Waffle19 · 23/11/2024 22:33

On the flip side, I find it weird that my neighbours never seem to have a window open!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 23/11/2024 22:36

DS has one of his windows wide open day and nightI and drives me mad. He also insists on having a fan on at all times and says he can't sleep without it. His room is freezing but he says he likes it like that. When he's out I shut the window and turn the radiator on to make sure we don't get any damp.

There is nothing illegal going on ( that I can see ) and his room is quite normal for a 19 year old.

I am wondering if you are my neighbour though.

Bloody hell that’s so weird!

Why is it anyone else’s business whether your window is open or not.

They must have very sad lives to even wonder about things like this.

I couldn’t even tell you whether my neighbours have their windows open all of the time or not.

InSpainTheRain · 23/11/2024 22:39

I think just for ventilation, some guys including my DS prefer it cooler and fresh.

WhereIsMyLight · 23/11/2024 22:49

It’s -1 where my in laws are and they’ll have the bedroom window open. It’s for the completely boring reasons of wanting fresh air, the room to be cold so they are warmed by the bedding rather than central heating and to hear the wildlife in their garden.

JBJ · 23/11/2024 22:50

My bedroom window is permanently open and curtains usually shut! This time of year, I'm up before it's light, so I tend to leave them closed as I won't be back in there until it's dark again. I like the window open for ventilation! In the summer, the curtains stay shut as it's south facing and gets too bloody hot.

Spare bedroom window is generally the same, as that's where the tumble drier lives and what's the point in opening curtains of a room that's rarely used?

Ds (18) also rarely opens his curtains as I've come to the conclusion that he's part vampire Grin but I do insist the window is opened regularly to air the room out.

Neither of us are drug growers/dealers and I'd hope none of my neighbours were nosy enough to worry about that based on us not opening curtains!

Milkand2sugarsplease · 23/11/2024 22:50

My bedroom window is open 365 whatever the weather and I'm not growing drugs. I like a cool bedroom and sleep better like that.
Admittedly I sometimes regret liking it like that to sleep when I get up in the morning and it's absolutely bloody Baltic but I just can't sleep with the window closed. And the window closed with the heating on is even worse as it gives me a grim head for the whole day.

No heating and open windows all the way.

SmellyNelliey · 23/11/2024 22:53

i leave my window open in the bedroom all year round for the fresh air,i also open all windows in the house for a hour a day in the winter and in the spring and summer morning till evening.

NotAPersonPerson · 23/11/2024 22:55

You don't live in a village beginning with the letter W do you?

Sounds exactly like my brother in law, he moved in a few months ago, his window is wide open 24/7, even over the last few days when it has been -6°c and snowing! He also practices his guitar most days.

Changeyourfuckingcar · 23/11/2024 22:55

Sounds like my brother in law to be honest, and he’s as straightforward as they come. He once woke up to a small snowdrift at the foot of his bed, apparently. Some people just run hot I guess.

I tend to keep my bedroom window ajar in nearly all weathers but couldn’t bear the curtains flapping/damp windowsill etc of having it wide open to be honest!

Yes, my son's xbox heats his room up nicely. Sit him in it in his post-gym kit, possibly eating, add a good pump of male fragrance and the PE kit in the wash basket. It gets a bit ripe.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 23/11/2024 23:41

My bedroom window is always open. I like tp sleep in a cool room and the fresh air keeps the room nice and fresh and clean smelling

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/11/2024 23:44

Like a warm house during the day but we just can’t sleep unless we have a cool bedroom with plenty of fresh air. So, the window is open all day with the bedroom door closed.

scoutingfortwirls · 23/11/2024 23:44

Fresh air?

DirlingWhervish · 24/11/2024 00:00

I'm loving all these window open people! I don't know why there is a stigma about it, but I have driven up to the house and notice we're the only ones whose windows are open in cold/bad weather, so I suppose others must see and judge. 🤷‍♀️

I guess it's not the norm but more common than I thought given the ratio on this thread. Cheers!🥂

Tarkan · 24/11/2024 00:07

This sounds like how I was as a teenager. DM honestly had the heating on 24/7 at 30° and then would light a fire in the living room as well (she's still like this tbf).

Even with my radiator off, my bedroom was above the living room so the heat from the fire warmed my room up too much. I had a near constant headache from the heat in that house. Even now when DH and I visit, the first thing we do is go to our room, turn the radiator off and open the window.

And I kept my curtains closed to stop the neighbours looking in.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/11/2024 00:07

Fresh air?

Yes indeed.

There’s a government website somewhere (no, I can’t be arsed to provide a link so please don’t ask 😁), where one’s postcode can be entered and it gives a rating of how clean the air is, ranging from 1 (poor) to 5 (extremely good). Here, on the NW coast, our address is rated 5.

Though having had my hat nearly blown away several times today by a salty, wild wind, I don’t really need a website to tell me.

eatsleeplaugh · 24/11/2024 00:08

Dead body in the house.

Cornecopia · 24/11/2024 00:10

I have my window open all the time. I love the coolness of my bedroom and feel I always sleep much better with fresh air. If I close it I feel claustrophobic
