Reasons you would keep your window wide open in all weather?

With the curtains firmly drawn? All day every day? Other than the obvious: a broken window which is unable to be closed (don’t think this is the case due to the below timing).

Since moving in a few months ago, our neighbour’s adult son keeps his upstairs bedroom window wide open no matter the weather. Freezing cold, sideways rain, doesn’t matter. Window stays wide open. And he’s in there most of the day, I can hear him practicing guitar or talking (he has a deep loud voice).

The only thing I can think of are nefarious reasons, eg that he needs the ventilation to grow cannabis (zero proof of this hence the thread looking for other reasons).

Who knows? My neighbour has bubble wrap up at the bedroom window! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ooh, I've seen people recommend this to people who are struggling to keep their homes warm in mse to act as insulation.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 23/11/2024 20:27

Some actors and singers do this. I've never asked for details, just noticed they keep their bedroom windows pretty wide open all the time. I assume it's good for the voice.

I’m hoping it isn’t drug-related. I grew up with a sibling who did this and I hated it so that’s where my mind went.

It sounds like a “you” problem as opposed to your neighbour. You’re judging him based upon your dodgy sibling who was doing illegal/unusual/uncommon shit? It’s not exactly a common trope. Not every man is a carbon copy of your sibling.

you come across as super nosy but I’ll bite:

it was raining today & I had my windows open, simply as I don’t feel well and I needed the stream of fresh air. I’m not cold, but if I was, I have heated blankets/bedding I can use. I also like hearing the rain, it’s comforting when you’re safe at home! I have blinds so nothing was wet.

I think it’s important to air out your home on occasion too, some people’s houses stink because they don’t do this. Especially at this time of year when it’s stuffy & muggy inside.

I grew up in the country in an unheated tudor house, it was see your breath cold all winter in every room. Ever since, my bedroom window has been open 24x7 365 and the radiator is permanently off. My DP of 38 years says this constitutes unreasonable behaviour but I can't sleep unless I do this.

Not this old banger 😆 Of course it’s a me problem, I’m asking to find out less suspicious reasons from people who either think more normally or have this going on.

Maybe he smokes in his room and either has been told he has to keep the window open because of it or does it so his parents can't smell that he's smoking in there.

beautifulbrothers · 23/11/2024 20:34

At 6.30/7am every window in our house is open wide, doesn't matter the weather. This freshens everything up and also kicks the thermostat into gear. After 10 minutes, the living room and kitchen windows are closed but we keep bathroom and bedroom windows open until the humidity on the window panes has cleared. If our bedroom window is open, I keep the blinds closed so I can shower and get dressed without nosy neighbours seeing anything. I always think it's weird when people keep windows closed all the time.

If his room is stuffy and/or humid, it makes sense that he'd have the windows open but blinds closed for privacy. He might have a screen that he doesn't want natural light to reflect onto. 🤷‍♀️

gamerchick · 23/11/2024 20:35

My daughter was like this. Window open, fan on all year around.

She definitely wasn't growing weed. She just liked a constant fresh breeze.

Ventilation. Our bedroom window is open all year round...though perhaps not WIDE open in the depths of winter! Today for example during storm Bert it's open a crack - because this house has poor ventilation and condensation mould will build up behind the furniture if we don't keep air circulating.

We have electric blankets and thick throws (and two dogs) if it feels chilly but luckily we both quite like a cold bed. We close the bedroom door during the day in winter to keep the rest of the house warmer.

I would assume that property has a similar condensation problem, or maybe smells a bit damp?

coffeesaveslives · 23/11/2024 20:45

We're like this - it helps air out the house, that's all.

DessertQuiche · 23/11/2024 20:15

Something sensible and amusing, not just a cheap snipe for having the audacity to wonder!

You can moan about cheap snipes all you like, but come on - it’s absolutely nothing to do with you, and distinctly odd to go to the trouble of creating a Mumsnet thread about it.

DessertQuiche · 23/11/2024 20:23

I’m now going to envision this is the case and I live next door to you, which is somehow comforting (sorry if the reverse isn’t true 😆).

He is a very lovely and kind hearted, if irritating, son!

addictedtolove022 · 23/11/2024 20:47

I keep mine open in all weather. I hate a stuffy bedroom and like to feel the air when I’m tucked up in bed.

custardpyjamas · 23/11/2024 20:48

None it's stupid, loosing a lot of heat for no reason in the winter. Our windows have little vents which are more than enough.

Never once claimed I wasn’t odd, but if I were to say I’m odd, then here comes the posters rolling their eyes about calling yourself weird or odd. MN threads can be about anything, that’s why MN is a great place. If every thread were about the threat of nuclear war or some horrible relationship devastation, would that be preferable to you? Serious concerns from the non-odd only?

You’ve gone to the trouble to reply, you know. That is even more pointless 🙃

Ours is always at least partially open. Neighbour opposite in a difficult relationship says she’s happy that it is as she knows she can shout at any time and well hear her.

Clafoutie · 23/11/2024 20:50

Winter2020 · 23/11/2024 20:02

I remember when I was a teenager a neighbour saying to me "Go upstairs and pull your net curtain in - it has blown outside a little and stuck on the brick". This neighbour told me "other people have commented to me about your curtain..."

I remember thinking why on earth would someone give a shit about their neighbours window or curtain.

Your neighbours son likes his window open- perhaps he likes fresh air or farts a lot. Who cares? Why do you? Do you need to get a hobby?

"other people have commented to me about your curtain..."

😂

@custardpyjamas it isn’t “stupid”, it’s personal preference. I have the radiator turned off in my bedroom also, so I’m losing nothing.

MiddleOfHere · 23/11/2024 20:52

Because he has a mahoosive gaming computer that produces 50,000 kilowatts of heat?

I have all of our upstairs windows open every day, whatever the weather, every morning for an hour or two because I like to air the house.

JustAboutHangingInThere · 23/11/2024 20:52

I reckon he’s a gamer. The set up will put out a decent amount of heat.

Changingagang · 23/11/2024 20:53

I wouldn’t spend anymore time worrying over it .

both my children (teens ) leave their windows open. It’s almost like they don’t pay the heating bills…..

ForGreyKoala · 23/11/2024 20:53

The only time I ever closed my bedroom window in my last flat was when there was an very strong wind and the long curtains would be sucked out the window. I hate stuffy rooms. The kitchen one was also always open.

Bixterret · 23/11/2024 20:54

tigger1001 · 23/11/2024 20:06

You could be my neighbour. We often have windows open upstairs and I will shut mine long before my teens will shut theirs. They don't feel the cod like I do.

That sounds very fishy to me.
